One question for DocBrown.

Tonight on ch9 news Peter Overton was babbling on about News Ltd buying into 25% of Foxtel and 50% (meaning having all of Foxsports).
he then noted "This should mean Foxsports and ch9 securing the rugby league in (from my memory )a $1bn deal.
I can assume this give Foxsports more buying power,it won't give 9 any more,I guess without simulcasting. You think that will be the end game?
Meaning we have got these useless 9 gits for another 5 years!!!

These guys must believe they have it in the bag,at this early stage.
Geez I hope7 and 10 do a bit of r[pping and tearing.

Watching Kim Williams on Sky News tonight, with his swarmy spin on the latest News decisions, makes you want to though a plate of off prawns at the Tv screen.

they're not sucking up to the ARLC. they believe they have it in te bag

Out of interest of the 250k or so Fox subscribers who watch NRL regularly how many do you think would ditch their subscriptions if Fox didn't have the rights?

If it was around 50% that would be somewhere in the region of $100,000,000 a year Fox would lose in subscriptions not to mention advertising revenue from their most popular sport.

I would ditch it. Its the only sport that is a must have for most people in nsw & qld...

If Nine make a bid that matches what the other station bid, does the ARLC have to accept it?

No.

They can keep going as long as they want.

It will end when Nine / Fox make an offer the competition won't match on Nine / Fox refuse to match what the competition has offered.

Thats it.

I would say a conservative 30% and if that means about $60m pa,plus their take up rate for the AFL is slow, they would not be Happy Jans.
I am guessing but I sgghest that Lek's Colin Smith has spelt it out to Foxsports that losing rugby league would leave a decent hole in their finances.Plus I am sure News has seen plenty of comments on Telegraph and rugby league blogs, where people have stated they will ditch Foxsports, should it lose rugby league.
If they haven't got the message now, they deserve a financial king hit.

I watch AFL, A league, and love all the cricket we get.

but if fox sports didn't have NRL, I'd probably ditch it. there's nothing on bloody foxtel outside of fox sports and tvn, it'd be hard to justify. buy an NFL game pass and a Cricket Aust game pass and I'd be right.

It's Peter Overton. He gets his "thoughts" from cue cards...

The fat lady hasn't even warmed up her vocal chords yet.

It was funny on the 7:30 report when he was asked if News Limited journos write with a deliberate agenda and he said something along the lines of 'that it was a good thing because it's what the community wants' (or some bile inducing dribble like that).

So sports fans whenever News Limited trashes your sport be happy in the knowledge that they do so because although you deny it, deep down it's what you really want!

If the only reason you have Fox is for the NRL and EPL, you can pay $80 a year for a season pass for the EPL on Fox Sports' website for online streams.

Looks like Ten is going to get an A-League match of the week.

Hell yeah, as long as they're forced to show it live.

I really need to look up all these passes, would kill for some test cricket and I can't afford fox (or to sit in a pub for three sessions of play :alcho:).

Outlook As a proven commercial television executive, Warburton must be wondering when the advertising cycle is going to turn in his favour. We can confidently inform him it will not be any time soon.

Consumer confidence continues to sag and although the usual coterie of advertisers - such as the state and federal governments and the supermarkets - continue to top the ad spending charts, there is an extensive malaise dogging this industry.

Finding that all-important compelling content is Ten's quest. Without it, Ten's advertising-dependent revenue model will not deliver the earnings turnaround the company so desperately needs.

This one?

http://www.afr.com/p/national/stokes_puts_squeeze_on_news_deal_x4M6QqrIOrrtkjn4BuLYWK

Kerry Stokes could frustrate Rupert Murdoch’s $2 billion bid for Consolidated Media Holdings by using his critical stake in the company as a bargaining chip to try to gain greater exposure to the pay TV sector.

Sources said Mr Stokes, whose Seven Group Holdings (SGH) owns 24 per cent of CMH, was unlikely to simply sell his stake without trying to get a strategic benefit out of the deal other than just a cash windfall.

It is understood Mr Stokes is considering using News’s bid of $3.50 a share in cash as leverage in an attempt to expand the wider Seven group’s presence in pay TV.

Mr Stokes is the central player in Mr Murdoch’s desire for News Ltd to take over CMH, which would give News a half-share in Foxtel and outright ownership of Fox Sports Australia, thereby giving News dominance over the pay TV sector.

A takeover would also transform News into a predominantly pay TV and digital company with legacy newspaper assets.

James Packer, who owns 50 per cent of CMH and who described the offer as “fair”, wants to sell out in order to use the proceeds to expand his gaming empire.
However, it took years for Mr Stokes, who owns leading free-to-air TV network Seven, to finally break into pay TV. Sources said it was unlikely he would exit his $481 million stake without securing some ongoing involvement in pay TV such as additional channels on Foxtel.

He could also try to gain a competitive advantage in the $1 billion National Rugby League media rights negotiations. Mr Stokes fought hard to be a player in the pay TV industry. Initially, he tried to litigate his way in via the five-year, $200 million C7 court case, in which Seven took on virtually every major media company in the country, in particular News.

The case ended in 2007.

But he eventually found a less confrontational way into pay TV by buying into the CMH share register

Read into the what you will. But Ten have just hired a footy head as Sales Mangler. From memory BOB is Adam Peeks uncle. He will know how to sell the NRL.

Ten Network sales chief hired
Ten Network has hired Barry O'Brien as chief sales officer following the sudden departure of Mike Morrison. Mr O'Brien retired in March after running media agency PHD. Ten Network chief executive James Warburton said Mr O'Brien's reputation, experience and understanding of the media planning and buying process, plus his long-standing relationships across the media and marketing industries, would be invaluable for Ten.
