THE bruising State Of Origin decider has produced a knockout blow in the TV ratings - setting a new record as the highest rating game in OzTam history.
Channel 9's league showcase hit a stunning peak of 4.825 million nationally (five city metro and regional), averaging 4.041 million viewers.
The five-city average of 2.68 million viewers (growing to a peak of 3.236m) set a record both for the match and the 2012 series, which was up 10.42 per cent across the three close encounters
Not surprisingly the game scored in Sydney and Brisbane, but also pulled its biggest ever audience in AFL-dominated Melbourne.
The blockbuster figures are also a win for the NRL, which is currently negotiating a new broadcasting rights deal, with some consideration being given to selling off State Of Origin as a seperate product to the weekly national competition.
Media analyst Steve Allen noted a slight drop in Brisbane audience numbers, putting the shift down to locals crowding pubs and clubs to watch the game (where OzTam cannot measure the viewer reach).

I think the NRL's $1b deal is in shatters.
