SYDNEY: Kiwis league centre Paul Whatuira is mulling over a switch to Super 14 rugby with the Waratahs next year.
VAINIKOLO JUMPS SHIP TO RUGBY UNION

The Wellingtonian, who will play for Wests Tigers against the Warriors in the National Rugby League (NRL) match in Auckland on Sunday, admitted he was weighing up several options as he comes off contract with the Tigers at season's end.
He confirmed he met with Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie last week and was awaiting a formal offer.
"It's just talk at the moment. I caught up with the Waratahs coach and they seem fairly interested – I guess I'll hear from them soon," he said.
"Ewen's a good coach, he's got a great knowledge of rugby and he could definitely teach me a lot.
"But I just want to concentrate on playing for the Tigers at the moment."
Whatuira, 25, counts All Blacks halfback Piri Weepu among his close friends, both hailing from the league stronghold of Wainuiomata in Wellington.
He played rugby on Saturday and league on Sunday as a schoolboy before getting his big break with the Warriors as an 18-year-old in 2000.
"I grew up playing rugby and I still follow the game. I still keep in touch with Piri and I'm a bit of a Hurricanes fan."
But Whatuira said there hadn't been any interest from New Zealand Super 14 franchises and said he was enjoying life in Sydney for the time being.
He was also awaiting a counter offer from the Tigers who he joined in 2005, the year they won the NRL title.
Whatuira has played 10 tests for the Kiwis and was named in coach Brian McClennan's squad for the Anzac test in April, but narrowly missed the playing 17.

a sweet start to our 2008 premiership assault

Tahs buck depleted Brumbies

February 01, 2008

NEW South Wales came from behind to pile on 38 unanswered second half points to down a depleted Brumbies line-up 48-19 at Bluetongue Stadium.

Down 19-10 at half-time against a Brumbies outfit with only one of its Rugby World Cup stars, the Waratahs turned the screws in the second 40 minutes, and they did it without star recruit Timana Tahu.

Tahu played the first half for the Waratahs but wasn't given anything like the room afforded him by Queensland last week.

It was supposed to be NSW unleashing the potent attacking forces of their backline but instead five of the home side's eight five-pointers came through forwards, with Adam Freier, Wycliff Palu, Matt Dunning, Sekope Kepu and Tatafu Polota-Nau scoring tries, along with backs Tom Carter, who got two, and Robert Horne.

Kurtley Beale and Brett Sheehan each booted two conversions as Lachlan Turner had an off night and missed with his three attempts.

For the Brumbies, Pete Kimlin, Afusipa Taumoepeau and John Ulugia grabbed five-pointers while Anthony Faingaa booted two conversions.

In front of 5185 spectators in Gosford, the four 20-minute quarters did produce plenty of ball movement and quick taps under rugby's new laws - as well as handling errors in greasy conditions.

The Canberra-based side led 19-10 at half-time after three first half tries but, following the sin-binning of Brumbies lock Dan Guiness, the Waratahs clawed it back to 19-17 when Dunning crossed in the 49th minute and Beale converted from the sideline.

NSW capitalised on the sin-binning again seven minutes later when a quick tap sent Kepu crashing over and the conversion gave the home side the lead 24-19.

Tthe inexperienced Brumbies - who played only prop Guy Shepherdson from their World Cup stars - thereon folded and the Waratahs began to run riot with four tries in 13 minutes.

Replacement Horne crossed in the 67th minute, hooker Polota-Nau in the 70th and centre Carter came up with two tries in four minutes when he scored in the 76th and 80th minutes.

A mismatch had always been on the cards as the Waratahs welcomed back nine Wallabies, but the young guns they used predominantly in the second half shone brightest.

"We played the game far more how we'd like to in the second half," Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie said.

"You've got to give the Brumbies credit for the first half, they certainly disrupted us and put pressure on, but we were able to work through that and we got our territory, we got our pressure game going and tries resulted."

McKenzie said he had been expecting his Wallabies stars, including Freier, Dan Vickerman, Phil Waugh and Palu, to be rusty.

"I didn't expect them to come out there and it was all going to be rosy. They've got to get match fitness," he said.

Brumbies coach Fisher described the blow-out scoreline in his side's first hit-out of 2008 as "irrelevant" and singled out rising star Christian Lealiifano - a long-term candidate to replace Stephen Larkham at five-eighth - for praise as he steered his side around during the first half.

"I thought he was very, very composed. He looked fit, he looked quick out there, he ran the show. The composure he showed in the first half was absent completely in the second half," Fisher said.

Don't get too cocky. The team you guys put out contained far more S14 players than the one we put out. In fact, when our best players were out there we beat you 19-10. Shame about the second half, but it happens.

Besides that, our best seasons tend to be when we cop a caning in the trials for some reason. Brumbies are still going to go all the way. My tip is for you guys to go one better and actually win the spoon this year. No Queensland to get in your way this time.

Tahs maintain undefeated run

By Adrian Warren
February 07, 2008

CRUSADERS and New Zealand five-eighth Daniel Carter landed the early punches but New South Wales counterpart Kurtley Beale delivered the knockout blow as the Waratahs defeated the visitors 24-14 in a Super 14 trial match at Sydney Football Stadium.

The Waratahs again showed their depth by recovering a 14-0 deficit to inflict defeat on a Crusaders team coached by new Australia coach Robbie Deans.

After scoring 38 unanswered points in the second half against the Brumbies in Gosford last week, the Waratahs poured on 24 points without reply in Sydney - 17 in the second half.

In doing so, the Waratahs claimed their third win from as many trials in the lead-up to their Super 14 opener against the Hurricanes on February 16. The Crusaders meanwhile suffered their first defeat in three trials.

Carter, playing his first game of the pre-season following a calf injury, shone early, setting up tries to centres Casey Laulala and Tim Bateman before he was one of multiple players from both sides to be substituted at half-time.

Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie was happy with the victory but felt his side could have been more clinical in the first quarter.

"We certainly weren't happy with our first part of the game, we weren't clinical and we weren't as aggressive and we didn't defend as well as we'd like," McKenzie said.

"But the good thing is we turned it around and stuck to our guns."

The Crusaders played the slicker rugby in the first half, putting together dangerous moves in the heavy rain while the Waratahs struggled to build momentum.

The Waratahs commenced their comeback in the 35th minute, when lively Brett Sheehan, who had replaced starting half-back Josh Valentine only eight minutes earlier, dummied his way over for a try after a strong forward drive.

McKenzie said he decided to introduce man-of-the-match Sheehan early in the game because he wasn't getting the result he wanted from Valentine.

"We thought we'd be proactive and we just thought the way Brett plays the game would suit the conditions better, and certainly him coming on the field made a big difference,'' McKenzie said.

Beale converted Sheehan's try to cut the deficit to seven points at half-time before scoring the first 10 points of the second half to push the home team into the lead.

The young five-eighth kicked a penalty and then converted his own try in the 48th minute, after he had stolen the ball from veteran Crusaders winger Caleb Ralph and sprinted 40 metres.

Beale missed only one kick, a 55th-minute penalty, but he converted the Waratahs' third try before being replaced four minutes later.

Centre Timana Tahu slipped a pass to flanker Rocky Elsom, who charged down the left flank before passing inside to winger Alfi Mafi.

McKenzie reported no major injuries, while Deans said that utility back Leon MacDonald was his major fitness worry going into next week.

Deans said the result of the game wasn't significant and some of the Crusaders' decision making would tighten up once the Super tournament commenced.

"In the second 40, there were a few blokes out there who haven't even played NPC, let alone at this level, so it was a big step for them, but they did well," Deans said.

"They didn't drop off the game. We are pretty happy with what we got out of it.

"It wasn't perfect. We probably put ourselves under pressure. It would have been pretty easy to actually turn the tables."

Deans said he would be very surprised if players in the Australia team lifted their game against the Crusaders, just to impress him in his capacity as Wallabies coach, and said they would be more focused on working as a team than individuals.

I know it was only a trial but it was a good come from behind win in conditions that suited the Crusaders more than the Tahs

Usual story - Waratahs can't compete when the opposition have their best team on the field. As soon as the replacements come on - those who won't be playing much, if at all, throughout the season - the Waratahs run away with it.

Looking good value for the spoon, IMO.

Tahu lights up Tahs' night

By David Beniuk
February 16, 2008

FORMER league star Timana Tahu supplied the rare moments of attacking spark in his Super 14 debut as New South Wales ground out a 20-3 win over the Hurricanes at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Tahu's silky skills set up a try in each half for Waratahs full-back Lachlan Turner, both with superb final passes, to provide the rare highlights in a lacklustre match.

Playing on the left wing, the former Kangaroos star sent Turner in for the Waratahs' first try in the 18th minute with a catch and scoop in one motion to give the home side an early 7-0 lead.

Then, in the 74th, he was on hand to send a sublime one-handed pass to the No.15 as he fell in a tackle to seal the win for the Waratahs.

But, on an eventful night for the former Newcastle and Parramatta star, Tahu was also pinged by South African referee Craig Joubert in the 28th minute when he aggressively grabbed Hurricanes full-back Cory Jane around the shoulders and sent him crashing over the sideline head first.

The Sydney crowd of 27,011 booed Joubert as he cautioned the Waratahs winger.

"Just to get Lachie over the line, it was a bit more of a relief,'' Tahu said, admitting he'd been a "good nervous''.

"I'm hoping to just keep on learning this year and hopefully the next couple of years I can be a big asset to the team.''

Coach Ewen McKenzie said Tahu had been the best of his ex-league pupils.

"I think he's been the best in term of aptitude and application in trying to learn the game,'' he said.

"It's a tough game and positional play's really important and I think that every time he takes the field he's doing it better and better.

"In all that positional stuff, he's getting those really classy touches and to give the last pass on two tries was outstanding.''

Tahu had few other opportunities as the brave new world of expansive rugby failed to eventuate on a dry Sydney night.

The Waratahs scored three tries to nil through Turner's double and Rocky Elsom while Kurtley Beale kicked a conversion and a penalty goal.

For the Hurricanes, Jimmy Gopperth booted a solitary penalty goal.

McKenzie praised his side's defence as it delivered enough bruises to force the Hurricanes into 32 turnovers.

"I think we knocked the enthusiasm out of them, knocked them out of their pattern,'' he said.

"I could definitely see with maybe 15 to go in the first half that they'd lost their rhythm and started to play a bit more one out.

"We made mistakes and they did and there was lots of contested loose ball ... I thought we handled those situations and the transitions better.''

Leading 10-3 at half-time, the Waratahs extended their lead almost immediately after the break when Elsom crawled over to make it 15-3.

But the home side couldn't put the Wellington franchise away with poor kicking and a chronic inability to retain possession hurting them.

NSW came close to a fourth try in the 78th, 79th and 80th minutes but were thwarted on each occasion by poor execution.

good first up win by the Tahs

interesting to note that Turner's second try came from Tahu's pass playing in the centres

The Hurricanes were horrible...very slow and poor handling errors. They have a lot of work to do to match the likes of Crusaders, Blues and Bulls.

It was agood game, the Cains fans are always a good laugh.

Two quaility touches from Tahu lead to 2 tires. Palu was everywhere, Waugh back to
some good form. Beale's kicking is an issue but Tom Carter played out of his skin at No.12 in his NSW debut.

Good signs.

PS Anyone see the hit Beau Robinson put on Jerry Collins? Nearly killed the bloke.

Jesus was I watching the same game as everyone else?

Tahu had an alright game, but it was not earth-shattering.

Turner's first try was very lucky as the bat-on by Tahu was just that - lucky. Also he was caught badly out of position several times in defence, and Turner had to save the day.

He'll be a gun I have no doubts, but his debut was solid without being spectacular.
