Seriously what is the enticement to go to the States? It's just not something I've ever felt.

Being Canadian I don't have the same fondness as a lot of people but... it is a big wide open place with limited history so it plays more to those who enjoy landscape and scenery. There is less collective history in the US than in a county in England. Get out of New England and the only places with much of a history are... Louisiana... uh... and maybe Texas and Utah, Hawaii and California?

Yet, if it is (relatively) unspoiled landscape and wide open spaces then there is a lot to enjoy about it.

Well I s'pose the fact that they're on average less intelligent could come in handy. :sarcasm:

They're also less uptight, spoiled, and small-minded.

Yeah I'd like to go to America but it's not high on the list.

Could spend the rest of my life in SE Asia. It's an amazing place.

I love SE Asia's culture, climate, and geography. The history doesn't interest me so much, but I can definitely see myself living there.

I'm a Europe fanboy due to my interest in ancient history.

Me too. Europe and the Middle East and North Africa are where it's at.

I feel the same about Asia

Not. Interested

I'm not particularly interested in large parts of Asia historically or culturally. China has some beautiful stuff and Korea was a fun place to live, but it's not really a place I'd recommend visiting.

Japanese culture does interest me and SE Asia is arguably the most beautiful region on earth when it comes to natural beauty.

I have a greater desire to visit Louisiana than any other part of America. Maybe Oregon as well, because I am a wine snob.

In other news, bought my (expensive) ticket to London last night. Only giving myself two weeks in the UK because f**k that place is expensive.

I'll then come back here, teach a tad longer so I can rebuild my capital, and then GTFO to join Beeker in Thailand.

.

I love parts of the history. I could spend weeks exploring Angkor, I'd love to visit Myanmar (particularly Bagan, where there are literally thousands of temples) and Cambodia and Laos.
Modern history is pretty dull there however

Turkey is one of my dream destinations tbh

I'm fascinated by the physical beauty of Angkor and would love to go back. The history, like most Asian history, doesn't really resonate with me because it has no direct relation to my ancestry.

I know it's a false link, but to me 'history' will always be that which formed western society. It's not true, obviously, but it's what hits closest to home for me.

I'm totally the opposite. I mean, I do love aspects of Western history...but English history for example bores me to death. I'm much more interested in more exotic and ancient histories.

I think Bazal could be our third member of the travelling trio Mis.

I actually really love the history of Asia. Yunnan has amazing minorities. I may get to learn/video a couple of things tomorrow. Then I'll head further south and drop down int Laos, which will only leave Myanmar as places in SE Asia I have yet to visit.
Work my way south through Laos and then West to Chang Mai and set up shop until Mis escapes the Dirty Dark Hole of Nanjing.

I want to see Italy, Greece, Egypt and maybe Turkey. The first three and definitely my top three though. I'm waiting a few years before I do it though, I'm not in the travel mindset at the moment and I want to save up as much money as realistically possible.

The Black Plague. The Crusades. The Roman Empire. The Greek Empire. Colonialism? None of that inspires and intrigues you?

Don't get me wrong - it all interests me, but in an abstract way. I don't have any ties to the ancient Khmer or Siamese or Han empires that I'm aware of. But I can trace back through my family tree and find somebody affected by the Black Plague or the Crusades or the War of the Roses, however indirectly.

Just remember as well if you travel to the States, you're not far from Mexico & Central America which is also a pretty amazing area rich with history. I loved the Mayan ruins, in particular in Talum, Mexico where the ruins near a cliff overlook a beach. Gorgeous!

I'm with you Mis. I want to get over to Europe sooner rather than later due to the family connection as well as the Roman, Greek, Crusade, etc. stuff you've mentioned.

South America has always been of great interest to me as well.

Rome and Greece do, absolutely. As I said Turkey is one of my dream destinations, in part because of Troy but for hundreds of other reasons. But I find a lot of European history dull personally, especially from the middle ages onward. I would like to visit some of the WW1 and WW2 sites. It'd be amazing to stand on battlefields my great grandfather survived

Yeah I'm pretty strictly interested in ancient history. Modern history doesn't particularly interest me.

Europe's probably my ultimate travel destination, but it'll have to wait a while longer. Shit 'ain't cheap.

Yeah, nor I. World War I and II interest me, but that's about the extent of it.

Have a good friend in Amsterdam and my sister is planning on living over there for a few years...hopefully it goes through and I have some free accomodation

Another on the ancient > modern here, except the Wars because of family lineage.
