I figure with just under 3 weeks... I won't get much further north than Kunming. We'll have to tackle Leaping Tiger Gorge together. And the rice terraces aren't 'in season'.
Aside: I HATE this selector ads on these boards.

***

Careful with 'cheap' London hostels, the cheapest are where the homeless, addicts and diseased crash for a night after begging through the day. I lost my towel my first night in a dorm there.

***
Guangzhou, the only airport improved by a fire inside its main passenger terminal.

For now, I need to figure out my 3 weeks in SE Asia plan. I have the options:

- Philippines
- Thailand (been before)
- Cambodia (been before)
- Malaysia
- Indonesia
- Vietnam

All are relatively cheap flights from here. Wanting beach time, so Thailand would be the obvious choice if I hadn't been there before and didn't intend to live there.

Normally, I'd say the Philippines, but things there aren't exactly stable right now either. Frustrate!

Mate, I'm really keen to go to the Philippines, my wife has heaps of family there that she hasn't seen.

But I'm a whitey and the rebels love to use people like me to try and get cash from Governments by using me as some sort of bargaining piece.

I'll be in the Philippines in two weeks, but I'll be sticking to the touristy parts. I'd rather not be used as a bargaining chip. I'm not worth much.

I daresay I'll couchsurf as much as possible while in the UK.

I went to the UK in October last year, stayed in London.

Hotels aren't brilliant, but if you want, you can stay in Earls Court which is supposedly where all Australian's stay.

The Tower of London is a pretty good thing to check out, especially if you have an interest in British history (surrounding the royal families of the past).

You can get a ferry that does a tour of London on the Thames which is pretty cool too and doesn't take up much time.

I found with London that just wandering around Piccadilly Circus, SoHo, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park was a great experience too.

Buckingham Palace is quite dull and boring, I went and took a photo and just left, it's not a very impressive building at all.

I have a heap of relatives around Huddersfield and Liverpool, so I spent most of the time out there.

I also went on a bus tour that left London and went to Stonehenge and then Bath which was pretty cool too.

Yeah, I've been to London twice. Stayed in a suburb called Belgravia both times. It's a stones throw from Buckingham palace. I would steer clear of the hotels all together and shoot for a bed and breakfast. The place I stayed at on the last trip was http://www.limetreehotel.co.uk/ pretty decent place and reasonable price for somewhere so close to all the action. Plus it includes breakfast so at least you'll be having one guaranteed meal a day.

The best tips I can give you are-

1. get yourself a weekly travel card. Should cost you about 30 pounds for one which covers zones one and two. If you wish to go further afield then you will need a more expensive card but tbh most of the stuff you'll want to see is in zones 1 or 2. Then just make sure you pick somewhere to stay which is near one of the main Tube stations in those two zones. The travel card also covers the buses in those zones as well but most of the time you'll be travelling by tube.

2. Get to know where the local pret a porter store is. Those places are awesome for a cheap feed on the run.

3. Go to a place called "tkts" in Leicester square. You will get really cheap west end theatre tickets there as its the official last minute ticket outlet. When we were there a few years back we saw the Lion King for half price and Avenue Q for about a third of the normal sales price.

Other than that, here are a few things to expect-

1. The room you get in whatever hotel you stay at will be tiny.
2. Don't expect a fridge in your hotel room.
3. The tube is a free for all. Especially at peak hour. Don't be afraid to push people around in order to get into a train as people will certainly push you in and out of them.
4. Very little is free to do there or even cheap. Most things worth seeing or doing will cost you an arm and a leg.

Some of the hotels now in London have a card as the key & when you go out you have to leave the card at reception. Just bear that in mind.

Oh, and KFC in London doesn't have potato & gravy, just gravy (which is questionable)

Also steak is overpriced & undersized compared to Australia, so avoid it.

The last place I stayed at gave you a regulation key to your room... Attached to an enormous wooden room number which was about a foot long and 3 inches thick. This was for the same purpose as basically the only way you could take the thing out of the hotel was in a bag.

I already hate London. I'm only going because of a wedding, and it looks like it's going to devour my Thailand fund and force me to stay in China a few extra months.

Worse, I'm really not even that interested in anything there :(

Only happens, usually, in the south west where a pocket of Muslim extremists live and sea pirates still raid coastal towns. They take hostages down that area and don't give them back usually...

Tell Agro he should come to Thailand on his honeymoon and you'll tour him around.

Seems a win-win-win (you-him-your wallet) if you ask me.

My friends are looking to do a cheap-ish tour of the US later this year, contiki or otherwise. Anyone know of any good ones that offer some of the best things to see?
To do everything we want would take tens of thousands of dollars and months that we don't have, so just looking for the best cheap alternatives.

Can't go past an rv for cheap and mobile. Quick Google says 1700 for 3 weeks and 2100 miles that sleeps 5. Probably get cheaper elsewhere. Then you can do what you want and skip what you're not interested in.

You also need to pick what part of the US you want to see. West coast? East coast? South? It's a BIG country, pick the area you absolutely WANT to see and start there. Trying to do New York, Seattle, LA, Chicago, New Orleans and Dallas isn't possible unless you have those months and stacks of cash.

I know it's huge which is why we want to do a kind of highlights tour. I couldn't even get around England and Ireland in 5 weeks let alone USA. I think my friends are more interested in LA/Vegas. I'm more interested in National Parks. Problem is I'm flat for cash and only agreed to go if we do a cheaper alternative to what I did in England.

Week in LA for around 600, 3 days in Vegas for 600, RV for a trek to grand canyon and Yellowstone for a week for around 800, back to LA for another 3 days for around 300, then done. That's split between all of you as well.

As long as you are holidaying for adventure rather than comfort, it's doable on a budget.
