Week in LA for around 600, 3 days in Vegas for 600, RV for a trek to grand canyon and Yellowstone for a week for around 800, back to LA for another 3 days for around 300, then done. That's split between all of you as well.

As long as you are holidaying for adventure rather than comfort, it's doable on a budget.

Ha that sounds great actually. I'll check that out.
We always holiday for adventure, don't worry :)

Afinals makes a few good points. Yosemite is also in that area and is just amazing.
Vegas, 2 days is enough for me as I'm no gambler. Stayed up around Fremont street there, much cheaper and more old style Vegas.

DO NOT STOP IN FRESNO.

Yeah I'm interested in Zion Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Yellowstone.

When I'm there studying on the back end of this year and the start of 2015, Yellowstone is a MUST DO on my list, fortunately for me two of the Uni's I wish to study at are very close to it.

Just waiting to see where I'm going. Wish Uni would hurry the f*ck up and tell me so I can plan shit.

My friends are looking to do a cheap-ish tour of the US later this year, contiki or otherwise. Anyone know of any good ones that offer some of the best things to see?
To do everything we want would take tens of thousands of dollars and months that we don't have, so just looking for the best cheap alternatives.

I did the Grand Southern Contiki tour in July. Did a week before in LA/Vegas and week and a half after in NYC and Hawaii. Loved it. Great way to see a lot of the country on a budget. Most agreed that doing your own thing in the areas you want to see a lot of before/after the trip is the way to go.

Let me know if you have any specific questions here, or PM me :)

Oh and the South is just awesome fun. If you trek down there prepare to gain a few kgs and do well with the birds by doing nothing but talking ;-)

Well I was leaning towards north but now you've got me neutral again with that talk.

Guangzhou airport isnt that bad. It isnt Hong Kong by any stretch but Adelaide is far worse I reckon.

Not a lot of international traffic going through Adelaide Airport though  I've yet to spend time in an airport I despise like I despise Guangzhou. Worst layover airport I've encountered.

You also need to pick what part of the US you want to see. West coast? East coast? South? It's a BIG country, pick the area you absolutely WANT to see and start there. Trying to do New York, Seattle, LA, Chicago, New Orleans and Dallas isn't possible unless you have those months and stacks of cash.

 My five week tour of the US included the first four on your list plus Miami, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington DC. You can definitely do all of those on the cheap and within a smaller time frame.

Seconded. I've flown out of African airports without electricity that still offered up more hospitality than Guangzhou.

That doesn't count. I know who budgeted your time and your cost. You doing that solo would have spiked that cost something fierce.

I don't think you do :p Heather was the laziest person I've ever met when it came to planning travel. Every day of that trip was planned and budgeted by me.

North + Canada is where I'm thinking next. I'm sure both are great. The South I just found very charming. Civil War stuff is a bonus if you're a history buff.

Yep, the missus and I did all of those cities Beeker mentioned (barring Seattle) plus Memphis, Miami, Boston, Cleveland and Toronto in 5 weeks on a modest budget

You just need to plan well and book early

Oops. I misread that as your first trip to the US when Fallon did it all. Not your trip with shiny, happy, bubbly Heather.

I still think focusing on an area with a limited amount of funds and time is better than criss-crossing the country.

Plenty of natural beauty, a lot of iconic sites, and a culture that is almost intrinsically linked with our own.

Plus American girls > Australian girls.

Ah. Fallon and I only did Portland, Vegas, Arizona, and Idaho. Much smaller trip.

Yeah I'd like to go to America but it's not high on the list.

Could spend the rest of my life in SE Asia. It's an amazing place.
