My folks have lived in Malaysia before and currently live in Thailand. Both are great holiday destinations, though Thailand does tend to draw out more idiots from around the globe.

We're going to miss the Full Moon Party. Holiday starts the 26th and ends on the 26th - the two dates the party is on :-/

Anybody got any SE Asia recommendations? Got a month off in January/February and want to spend it someplace warm. Looking for beach time, good food, and some culture/adventure.

Penang for culture and food, then you can slip over to Thailand for the beaches and adventures. It's an easy trip to Phuket and all the surrounding beach resorts. Nowhere better in Asia for culture and food than Penang IMO, being the crossroads it is..

Less-travelled (comparitively) places like Perhentian Island, Tioman Island, Sipadan (best dive site I've been to) are awesome as far as Malaysian beach spots go.

I also really liked Penang - we headed up to the north part of the island and it was the nice quiet getaway we needed to recharge the batteries. Stayed at the pines resort.

I liked Chang Mai, got to sit in the back of a ute and hike it up to the Himalayas.

We drove so far up the mountains that you could look down to see the clouds

That's something I've always wanted to do.

In the process of planning LSL for 2015 - 16. I know it's a way off but I want to be able to do exactly what I want during the 4-6month stint. Basing ourselves inSth France for at least 3 months & spend 2 in uk. Going to be one hell of an expensive trip, but why do it another way but he way you want. It will be my first OS trip, bit my wife's 3rd. Yes Vince, look out French wine regions :alcho::alcho:

You're in the right area too Johnsy with Cotes du Rhone around the corner (South East). Cote Roti, Hermitage, Chateneauf-du-Pape, etc. Good stuff mate. You and the bride should love it. I was there a decade ago. Brilliant, expensive but brilliant.

I've heard wonderful things about Chiang Mai too, actually. I had an ex who spent a month in Thailand and adored her time there. I think the Flight of the Gibbon zipline tour is near there.

Cambodia is really only on the agenda so I can visit Angkor Wat and the Killing Fields, but I'll have to negotiate the specifics with the missus.

Angkor Wat is awesome, Bayon (sp?) is the pick of the temples. Hot as hell (no shade like the other sections + 100% stone), but the most picturesque by far. Killing fields + S23 are pretty shocking to check out. No wonder the Foriegn Press Club does a roaring trade, you need a drink or 7 after going.

Mate I can't wait. I get excited just thinking about it. Don't be surprised if I don't make it back. I'll be trying to organize a vist to the French bureau before I leave, then try to organize a work "exchange" for 12 months. I would have "qualified" by then. What's the worst that can happen? They say no.

Favourite place in the world. Been there 4 times and always finding different things and places to see and do. Food is great and cheap.

Three days until I head to China's sunny Hainan province. First visit since I went there back in summer 2008. It might be winter on mainland China, but still looking at 18-24 degree days on the beach over Christmas. Winning.
