I'm surprised Nein are only raising this now. I've thought for years that sharp directorial control would allow ads most times the ball went dead and, given that it makes money, I can't believe Nein haven't thought of this before.

One thing they should do is get better technology so the ref can slow down the restart if the ad is stil on. Watching FTA for the first time in years today a number of times after the goal was kicked it went to an ad and by the time the game came back on they had kicked off and were into the first or second tackle. Seeing players take a ko and thunder back at the opposition is great fun to watch yet TV seems happy to let us miss it.

And that's the problem, there is no "sharp directorial control" that can turn a 23 second break in play into a 35 second break (including lead out and lead in). Currently there is no way to guarantee a particular break is going to actually last 30 secs until it is over. By that point they're committed to the ad and fans are left missing several seconds of the action. That's not what the fans want and honestly it won't be what Nine want either. It hurts the game and it hurts the broadcast. What they want is to extend their "sharp directorial control" to guarantee that the game doesn't restart inside the 30 sec break so they can get their ad without cutting off parts of the action that the fans want to see.

Well, couldn't they just do what the AFL do after a goal is scored? The AFL umpies simply wait for a light in the grandstand to tell them when the ad is finished before they restart play.

Probably easier in the NRL with all the refs mic'ed up. Video ref just gives the go ahead once the ad is finished.

Of course they could. Exactly how it's implemented isn't the issue. It's the fact it isn't provided for in the current contract. The NRL isn't currently obligated to tell its refs to wait for such a signal, so they don't.

Good to see. Even if they are trying to influence the ARLC.

It's believed every network interested in securing the NRL coverage, except Nine, has presented Storm officials with a plan on how it would promote and develop the game locally.

Except Nine. Surprise!

Yeah, but I'm talking about the next contract. The talk is, if we want the big bucks we need to offer the networks more ads. All I'm saying is the answer is simple. The game has a lot of natural stoppages, especially trys, kicks for goal, line dropouts etc. So, at these stoppages we stop the clock, extend the natural stoppage for a few more seconds for the ad to be placed and the ref waits for the signal to restart play.

Channel 9 to show Melbourne Storm free-to-air games live locally

Russell Gould
Herald Sun
March 06, 2012 12:00AM

THE rare sight of rugby league on Channel 9 on Sunday afternoon was not just a tease, with the network having assured Melbourne Storm that all of its free-to-air games would be shown live locally this season.

Nine used Sunday's grand final rematch between New Zealand Warriors and Manly as a lead-in to the first one-day cricket final, prompting local league fans to scratch their heads in confusion.

Last week's Round 1 matches on Thursday and Friday nights were not shown in Melbourne until well after midnight.

They were played as the NRL announced two games a week would be shown live in the US, adding to live coverage as far afield as Africa.

"But you can't watch it live in Melbourne. That doesn't seem right to me," Storm coach Craig Bellamy wrote in The Australian on Saturday.

It's believed, however, Nine managing director Jeff Browne has assured Storm officials any free-to-air games, including the Round 5 Friday night home clash with Newcastle, would be shown live on digital channel Gem, with the potential for any blockbusters to be shifted to the main channel.

But that commitment does not solve the problem as far as Storm chief executive Ron Gauci is concerned.

He said there should be a promise for all NRL free-to-air games to have decent coverage in Melbourne, and for that coverage to be promoted.

With the next NRL TV rights deal being negotiated, Gauci said it was crucial the winning broadcaster had a plan to develop and promote the game in all new markets.

"There was an announcement last week that games would be shown live around the world, yet Melbourne, the most passionate sporting city, struggles to get equal access," Gauci said.

"It's our view that whoever is successful in securing the broadcast rights is committed to the growth of the game. Their commitment should not just be showing the game live, but also to promote it through the programming at every opportunity.

"We want the broadcasters to show as many games as possible to grow the game. The way people see the game first is on TV."

It's believed every network interested in securing the NRL coverage, except Nine, has presented Storm officials with a plan on how it would promote and develop the game locally.

BILLY Slater's report for a high shot on Canberra fullback Josh Dugan in Saturday night's game was tossed out by the NRL match review panel yesterday.

That's what he said. All FTA Storm games live.

Meh.

It's too little too late from my perspective. Most Storm games are Foxtel games anyway. On the rare occasions they play away on a Channel 9 game, its not that hard to find a live feed.

What I'd really like to see is all the other Channel 9 games at a reasonable time - Friday night in particular (I can handle a 4pm Foxtel replay on Sundays).

But what I'd really really like to see is Channel 9 get booted and anyone else get the FTA rights. That would be a fair penalty for years and years of abuse and neglect from GTV 9.

I stand corrected. My stuff up.

But as you said how many FTA Storm games would there be in a season 5 or 6 tops most are Foxtel.

Because unlike 9 who have a board that is partially run by Victorians with stakes in the AFL clubs, the other networks know that if they buy a programme they need to promote it.

And notice that it says other networks - not just Channel 10...

So rather than getting people in Melbourne into the routine of watching a game every Friday night, there may be a game one week, another two months with nothing then the next game shown. Without having prominent advertising, people won't know if and when it will be on. Obviously, this is not ideal for maximising ratings!

So the ABC and SBS were there? ;-)

I understand Sevens interest for State of Origin, but I can't see the regular season games getting the level of commitment that 10 will give them.

Too little, too late Channel 9. What an insult - contract negotiations have commenced and they are now suddenly intersted in televising the game at a decent hour in Melbourne (sometimes).

Hey Doc, I don't know the ins and outs, but what would be the value of say, giving a network the rights in NSW+QLD and then giving the rest to someone who'll play them elsewhere?
