Do you really believe they will start up another Rebel comp if they miss out this time? How much money did it cost 16 years ago?

Wouldnt it just be easier to opay the extra $250-$300 Mil up front ( over 5 years) and not go through the heart ache considering their other concerns at the moment?

If a rebel comp is required to guarantee paytv content then yes, of course I can see them starting one. Going off past experience, and the fact they wouldn't take it off the table this time either.

As far as the 'cost' - well that cost is being born by every club/supporter in the NRL, every junior, every junior club. This is called News Ltd 'recouping their investment'.

So Roy suggests 25% is the magic figure.

(ie) The IC may take 25% less income for to have league on FTA only . This assumes that News makes the last bid and even though it is higher, the bid is rejected as not high enough.

He also makes the point that there is not much money available from the FTA networks only.

So why would News Ltd pay more than they have to?

I think the NRL is smarter this time around in preventing whole teams changing to the rebel comp...

Are they going to start up 3-4 teams from scratch in Sydney to compete against the Bulldogs, Tigers, Dragons etc?

Also, as I mentioned before, how much money would it cost, and wouldnt it be easier to pay the money to the NRL now, rather than spend a decade "recouping their investment" like the did the last time?

I agree that it seems only a remote possibility, doesn't make sense, would be done at dire economic cost and would cost fans.

Unfortunately, all that was true last time around. The big difference this time is that there is no rival pay tv operator.

The best scenario for RL would be a new sports-oriented pay tv operator setting up in Australia. But that is not on the horizon and what seems good for the sports coffers may not suit the fans.

Maybe we need the NBN and broadcast laws to disappear before anything like this can happen.

If all you are going on is that they did it the last time around, this was done to acquire the rights in the first place when Nein had pretty tight contracts in place...

They have the rights already this time.. all they have to do is pay more money..

Why?

Where is the commercial imperative? As long as they outbid FTA then they win.

What Roy is suggesting is that unless it is at least 25% higher than the FTA bid, then the NRL could reject the offer. This is the 'premium' that RL may have to cop.

Interesting from a fiduciary duty point of view though, if the highest bid is rejected.

So how much will they bid if there is no rival FTA offer on the table?

I'm betting that the other 5 ( or 6 games with expansion) will attract higher bids from FTA then the $42 Mil a year that Foxtel is currently paying...

Channel 9 and 10 have got to show some sports content...
