Whilst of course I hope we get the $$ that the rights are worth I also hope the NRL does what the AFL did in their dealings in that the NRL will decide the draw for the season (not the networks) and that the FTA channels bare required to show all games live to states where the game is played (ie NSW, QLD and Vic). None of this delayed bullsh*t

It's a big unknown at the moment, we've heard that Channels 7 & 10 want a piece of the action, plus Channel 9 have been quoted as saying "we're not going to lose rugby league rights". As for Fox Sports, no official word, only speculation for people after the AFL was done. Like Channel 9 though, they don't want to lose rugby league either.

As mentioned before, the SMH article is stirring the News Ltd pot as Fairfax love to do & the clubs are just eager to ensure the NRL doesn't get dudded like the last deal.

Until the IC is finalised, no-one can really say anything, but the negotiations will be a fierce battle ( which is great ) & I think it's safe to say that the NRL will get a hefty increase. Even if Ch9 & Fox Sports retain most of the rights, the others will push the price up to make them spend more & that seems like a bit of a win for everyone.

Parra would have us give no ground to achieve independence from News Ltd, keeping the status quo while the widely proclaimed "most important TV deal in the game's history" is negotiated with News Ltd by a half News Ltd controlled NRL board. And he'd have us keep News Ltd in our boardroom with no specific exit date in the hope that at some vague point after 2018 News will suddenly start interpreting its agreements to our advantage and leave without extracting some final benefit for itself anyway.

Alongside the price they should also have a range of criteria and the bidder that fulfills the most criteria and matches the price wins

Fixed schedule
National Covg (live or before 8pm in all states)
Pre and post game in all states
Respectful Int coverage
contra advertising

The NRL has made waves in regards to this.

About time we started to hear stuff like this. Also 1 billion shouldn't be an optimistic figure. If the AFL can get 1.25 billion when all is said and done then we should be looking at getting at least 1 billion.

Also fox outghta be worried. It's not just Sydney and Brisbane where their subscribers will plummett but also regional NSW and QLD (which are significant markets).

I live in Newcastle and pretty much everyone i know with foxtel would p*ss it off if they lost league.

I kinda hope it happens just so that they can see that it's the NRL not the AFL who brings in the money. They can be stuck paying out a sh*t ton of money to the AFL whilst their overall subscription rate falls.

Not at all.

If the current agreement was allowed to runs it's course the game would be back to running itself, any way it wanted. The only sticking point is money owed to News Ltd - this is a problem that would be resolved with accountants and courts, not the opinions of one side only. Bear in mind that the money to be haggled over would not be that much in the scheme of things. Most of it will have been recouped.

Don't fall for the rhetoric. Each deal has to be bigger, better and more important than the last.

It was worth getting right rather than race to an arbitrary deadline.

This sort of negotiation was why those clauses were so crucial.

Gallop can carry on all he likes - he seems to have forgotten that there is also a first-and-last bid clause with this commission as well.

So regardless of his hollow words, news ltd will have the last say.

And it will be this way until 2027.

They may well have the first and last rights, but if they want it they will this time have to pay for it.They only have to lose the monday night timeslot,to feel the ratings effect.
And should they lose Super saturday ,they will really start to feel the pain. There is no obligation that the NRL has to provide 5 on Foxtel, just that they have first and last rights.
They can have last say,but the last say has to be backed by the equivalent or bettermoney than other bidders.
LOL I am sure Gallop will come up with a public bluff, that has no base behind it.Don't try to compare it with the Mlbourne FTA Friday night ch9 debacle.

What would Fox do if the NRL pulled the pin on them? A Rebel league? What a "super" idea.

I think News Ltd might have other concerns at the moment then trying to sign 300 Rugby League players in Australia to a rebel competition...

The timing of Gallops comments may not be a coincidence...

There is always the first-and-last rights as well.

This really makes Gallops words hollow. Maybe you could fix that with an emoticon as well.

Explain to us about the first & last rights arrangement?

These comments are about getting Foxtel to pay more money for something they get extremely cheaply at the moment...

If there is no one else bidding for the games, then this may be difficult to do...

First & last rights were apparently something News Ltd would not budge on in the IC negotiations. It was one of their conditions that had to be met to ensure their early exit from the current deal. So it is safe to assume that these rights are highly valued.

I have no idea how you negotiate a fair deal when their is only one pay tv operator. The assumption seems to be that there is a lot of money available from other media owners for FTA rights.

The prospect of attemptinga paytv operation in Australia with no league is what led to super league in the first place. The fact that News then got the chance to 'recoup it's investment' is a travesty. But it goes to show the lengths they had to go to.

I would assume they need to match any other deal on the table for the content, regardless of whether its Pay Tv or not...

Well, in Master's article, Gallop is saying that there is a lot of interest from all the FTA networks, two of which currently dont have any games at the moment....

The prospect of attemptinga paytv operation in Australia with no league is what led to super league in the first place

Do you really believe they will start up another Rebel comp if they miss out this time? How much money did it cost 16 years ago?

Wouldnt it just be easier to opay the extra $250-$300 Mil up front ( over 5 years) and not go through the heart ache considering their other concerns at the moment?

time?

i hope it's better than his last which turned out to be a fizzer

Not sure of the time.

At least he's got actual quotes in this article which is a very good one.

It certainly puts the heat on foxtel. It's got nearly 7,000 people voting in a poll, with 76 percent saying they'll cancel their subscription if there's no NRL.

Won't see that in the telegraph.
