That's not quite correct. The FTA component of the AFL rights was less this time, but last time 7 split it with 10, whereas this time they are paying it all themselves.

Regardless, 7 have the money to pay for the whole rights

that is what i just posted

and this is why http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl...than-ever-before/story-e6frf3e3-1226047392787

The simulcast option meant that the Seven Network paid less for their rights as they lost total exclusivity,

Do you are saying that 7 has enough money to pay out another 450-500 million or Rugby League fta rights?

They do. Not that they necessarily will do that but they are certainly capable of breaking 9's F&L rights. Their end game is a partial package, enough to make 7 be viewed as a Rugby League network.

As for whether or not they can fit it into their AFL commitments - think of it this way - AFL & NRL are strong in different markets. 9 makes money showing 3 games in basically only NSW, ACT & QLD. 7 can generate more net income by owning both the AFL & NRL rights than they can by owning the AFL alone.

Plus by taking a portion from 9, they take guaranteed revenue from their competitor at the same time.

Fair enough, if 7 get the rights it should be written in that the matches have to be on the main channel in Sydney and Brisbane and on one of the Digital channels at the same time in all other states.

Good to see you back commenting on this. I would like to see all networks get something. 7 don't want the lot but might take Friday nights or maybe just S O O.

Welcome back, your sanity has been missed on this thread.

Its pretty clear if they wanted to 7/10 together could destroy nein's sports coverage in a single stroke. From the little i have seen i really like 7/10's AFL live game productions, it is professional and smoothly run unlike the weekly shambles that is RL on 9.

Do you think fox will push for all games live (simulcast obviously)? Might put 7 off competing with 9 if they do

Fox should get only what they are willing to pay a fair price for.

Just people meeting around the trap.

Don't be surprised if/when 10 pick up Friday Night Football & 7 pick up Sunday Afternoons.

Same. It's up for grabs but ultimately any prime time slot other than Friday & Saturday will struggle for F2A coverage of both NRL & AFL for the immediate future given the metro gulf - unless you can programme both.

7 are going to push the Friday night dual coverage angle but it's going to be pricey - their back up is Sundays and for mine it's the better value for what it can do.

Will 7 go for any more matches on Sunday afternoon than just the one?

see doc brown's thoughts on page 101 of this thread - he'd be the number 1 source about tv rights on this forum

As long as the coverage is nationwide across digital channels then I don't have an issue with Seven getting it. Anything less shouldn't be accepted as a bid.
