It's a pretty crappy position for channel 9. Basically they need to get the NRL rights. If 7 were able to get the NRL rights and the AFL rights channel 9 would be f*cked. Problem is they are going to struggle to outbid channel 7 as they are broke.

7 must be licking their lips. Either they can get the NRL rights and f**k 9 over or they can force 9 to pay a lot of extra money when they are struggling for it.

Ultimately though as i have said before as much as i would like to see us beat the AFL deal i'm really not worried. As long as we get something like 1 billion plus that will set us up for the future to really get the game moving.

You know the funny thing about AFL fans position is they are all desperately hoping they get more money just so that they can claim they are the most popular sport.

Yet in every thread about tv ratings they boast that the reason they are worth so much more is because the games last longer and have much more ads shown during the broadcast.

No AFL fan will actually discuss the ratings (you know how many people are actually watching the games). They just want to look at the actual tv deal because it is affected by things like the length of the game.

The NRL is the more popular code of the two and you only have to look at the ratings to see this.

Why are AFL fans so fond of the term "butt hurt"?

:?

Some sort of traumatic MCG experience no doubt.

in the boggers at the G reference no doubt

Sordid sex on website

by: Matt Doran
From: Herald Sun
May 03, 2007 12:00AM

AFL matches, scout halls, hospitals, supermarkets and cinemas are among venues across Melbourne listed on a gay website as hook-up points for sordid sexual encounters.

The Australian Family Association has called on police to stringently monitor the website, which promotes itself as a "neighbourhood cruising guide" and features more than 15,000 public locations in Australia where gay and bisexual men meet regularly for sex.

The Canadian-based website has been known to police for some time, but recent posts about hardcore sex acts in family-orientated venues have prompted fresh calls for it to be banned.

Men have posted messages about sexual liaisons in toilets during AFL football matches at the MCG and Telstra Dome.

Other disturbing meeting points include:

PUBLIC pools: members openly talk about having oral sex and intercourse at swimming pool toilet blocks and in saunas.

MAJOR shopping centres: toilets, cinemas and change rooms at Southland, Knox and Fountain Gate shopping centres are listed as hot spots for gay activity.

AIRPORT lounges: numerous posts list flight departure times and call for men to loiter near public toilets and lounges on the lookout for potential "targets".

A HOSPITAL: toilets at a major Melbourne hospital are listed as a rendezvous point for gay encounters. According to the listing the toilets are frequented by "visitors, nurses and doctors".

Other locations include public parks and gardens, lifesaving club toilets, public libraries and a scout hall.

The site also includes a guide titled "Help In Case You Are Arrested".

Police spokeswoman Cassandra Stone said: "We are aware that these types of places exist and we actively patrol them."

Australian Family Association state secretary Angela Conway said the public domain was not the place for sexual activity.

"This sort of hyper-sexualised culture is just not a good thing for families with young children to have to encounter," Ms Conway said.

"It is disgusting that the community's free use of these facilities is being compromised in this way."

There's an article in the fin review today talking about the court case Optus vs Telstra + NRL + AFL. Telstra threatening to tear up $100m+ contract with AFL if the lose.

Obviously the NRL would be hurt too. Current contract isn't much but going forward it could be.

Does anyone know if off-season content is part of the negotiation or is that solely the networks perogative?

I ask as i would love some classic games and/or individual team reviews of their seasons. Gets pretty boring summer weeknights without any footy.

Tonight there is a classic GF on at 1.30 am, which is bugger all use to anybody on a worknight. While the borefest that is union 7's is on at 10.30.

Hey guys, I have been reading this thread for over a year now with interest. Is there a rough timeframe we can expect the deal to be finalised?

Negotiations should start early in the new year as soon as the IC is up and running.

And considering how long it is taking to get the IC up, I wouldn't want to speculate on a timeline for the TV rights...

I heard something interesting from a friend on the weekend.

Apparently, people with a Samsung TV will be able to watch NRL/AFL through an app on their TV's similar to the ABC iView player.

Subscription choices to include a full season pass (every game), all of your teams games, or individual games.

This service will be offered by Bigpond and will be unmetered to Bigpond subscribers but available to everyone. Not sure what the subs will cost but would be much cheaper that Foxtel...

This is simply the bigpond sport app (currently on tbox). It is a delayed telecast of the game you want to watch and anyone can access this on bigpond.com and nrl.com. It will not be a live so foxtel will still be required

What he was talking about is not the same as what's currently offered. This is LIVE NRL/AFL for a paid subscription fee and streamed over the internet to your TV. He was talking implementation as early as next season, although possibly later.

This guy is in the electronics industry and its just something he heard being spoken about in the office. Have no idea or if there is any weight to it, but it is an interesting idea that would see Telstra make a nice earn on their internet rights investment.

Also available on new internet-ready LG tv's, as well as new Samsung models as outlined above. I'm sure other manufacturers will follow in future, but only these two currently offer compatible models atm.

Fair enough. However, I cant see how they can do this. At present, Telstra are not allowed to show the games live over the internet, they only can on the mobiles. However from 2013 things may be different.

Depending on the cost, I would be willing to part ways with foxtel for a direct feed providing it is in HD

Yeah, my understanding of the current deal is the same, no live internet streaming of the games.

I would dump foxtel in a heartbeat if there was a good quality reliable service that had live access to all games, or even just the ones not broadcast on FTA.

so... nrl currently doesn't have Internet rights, and on the contrary they've assured fox and 9 that there won't be live streaming in the previous deal?

damn, even 5 years ago that's backward. u need it, not cos it bring in money, but for promotion.

if its going to be a downloadable app tgen I'm sure it will also be made available through Xbox, tbox and other means. its a huge step forward in increasing penetration.
