The weekly Paul Carige award

We need a Ben Hunt award... Categories to be considered:
1. Dropping kick offs
2. Giving away crucial penalties
3. Allowing one on one steals
4. Playing like you have a big lead, when you don't even cover a converted try

Anybody who suggest this isn't in the league of Cariage is kidding themselves. From memory, Cariage put his foot into touch 3 times, once on the dead ball line when the ball was deemed to have stopped moving. He also put a kick on at FT that nearly resulted in a FG from 50m out. It wasn't even a GF...

Carige kicked a ball straight down the field on FT. That's next level geniused, almost as bad as the guy in the UK who tried to kick the ball out on the whistle only for it to stay in and gift the other side a match-winning try. Only that could usurp Carige's mental explosion.

Dropping kick offs is an error. Tipping a guy on his head is a mistake. Getting the ball stolen one on one is dozey at best. Kicking the ball into touch is likely a coach's edict. All bundled to make a complete f**k-up of a game, but to me a Carige is a brain melt of the highest order. Hunt didn't have a brain melt, just a shit game.

Paul Carige's efforts were definitely more retarted, but it was a loss in the semi's to the Bulldogs who went on to get smashed by Brisbane in the GF. The same would have happened to Parramatta had they got through, so it doesn't have the same impact.

Ben Hunt is on a whole different level. This was a Grand Final and they had it in the bag. He single-handedly gave the Cowboys their first premiership in the most heartbreaking of fashions. Absolutely gut wrenching stuff.

Maybe.
But we had a better chance than the Bulldogs I'm sure. We'd already beaten the Broncos twice that year already.

And the ball was still rolling when Carige touched it. Ref mistake.

The kick on the fulltime siren was incredibly stupid, but it didn't cost Parra anything. The FG missed.
For mine the dumbest thing he did that day was catching the ball half a metre from the sideline with the defence on top of him. He gets driven over the sideline easily and sets up a Bulldogs try. He lets that ball bounce and Parra are likely in the GF.

The difference is Carige wasn't a big reason his team made it that far, and he never played in the NRL again after that.

Hunt will most likely be named captain and have another fine season next year.

Carige was almost deliberately being a complete genius.

No other player in this thread will ever be worthy enough to be a joint title holder.

What's Paul Carige doing these days anyway? He doesn't even have a Wiki page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Carige
It's like he's been banished from the internet.

He's been interviewed in recent years, can't remember where I saw it though.

It would have to haunt the shit out him still, especially having never played again. I know his heart was riding the blue and gold, but still, I've never heard Sterlo sound so venomous towards a player in commentary before.

Almost as geniused as Carige's screw ups in that prelim V the Dogs was this hairdo he sported for a while... Brian Smith should have had a question mark over his mental stability the day he turned up to training looking like this...

with 50 or seconds before full time (from memory) why would you just not out up an attacking kick as Cowboys whilst they might have got 7 tackles were never going to use them all up in a short time frame, hit the spear tackle for a piggy back penalty and then that knock on.

So that you give the opposition the ball in their own quarter, and get your defenses set. He was clearly playing to instructions. The Broncos, (read Bennett), obviously felt they didn't need to score any more points, that they could hold the Cowboys out and take the title, and would have done so, if the winger had stayed on his man.

I was getting ready to announce Jason Taylor when Kyle Lovett 'started' at hooker in a move of pure Sheenius, but it went much better than expected
