Good job Newman. I thought that Dino was very impressive as a guy who seems to know his onions.

I feel a bit weird about it having listened. One takeaway was that the club needs to change significantly to be an ongoing concern, but they seem to have a plan around this.

Their investment of the extra money and the appointments of CEO and other positions will be key.

Sensational interview Frank.

We have a future with him in charge.

& well done for giving Damien Irvine a wrap because the club would already be relocated without the development & without a premiership.

Was interesting that Dino seemed to think that too, even though the Unity ticket forced out that board.

Great interview.

But scary.

A 16,500 break even crowd figure is crazy in a business sense. That seems to be a lot higher than previously stated by past management. So does that mean that the true breakeven figure was never true in the past? Or have costs in running a game at the ground escalated to these levels? I’d love to know the breakdown of the costs.

Our two highest crowds last year when the team finished in the top 4 was a 13,000 and 14,000 crowd. That’s seriously pathetic. We lost big money every home game last year. Every home game contributed to our financial strain, not helped it. Not even a derby game gave financial relief.

As a kid I can remember going to games on a Saturday night and you’d get consistent crowds of 14,500 to 16,500 people. Why does this not happen these days? You probably have to point the finger at the comprehensive Foxtel coverage of every game that didn’t happen then. But there must be some other contributing factors as well.

I’m sorry but this aspect of the Clubs business model has to change radically going forward. This seems to be one of the biggest factors in the Club running at huge losses each year. (now that we know the break even factor.) We have to get more supporters to games (find new incentives to get bums on seats) or we have to take some games away to have some profitable games to offset the games that lose big money. What’s currently happening can’t continue.

Good post slayer.

The people of the shire are apathetic & lazy, they don’t know how good they have got it.

I would love to be able to go to the game with less than a 30 minute walk or drive. Sometimes I wish I followed the knights so I could. That’s why I love the other NRL, to get my footy fix.

Would shire people even care if the sharks got relocated? Damn right they would..but they do nothing to get us out of the firing line.

I agree, it’s the TV being so easy but we must remember that we receive something like $13 million a year for that privilege, so we can’t complain.

I’d really like to know where all the $ goes. Goes to show, not having big $ sponsors really hurts!

We do need to get more to the games, but 16,500 is breakeven. Really?

Does that take into account advertising revenue for the venue / naming rights? Don’t really buy it to be honest...or there is some serious expense management issues to the stadium.

16,500 and the joint feels friggen packed. And is not a real pleasant experience for those standing. With scheduling the way it is and ground facilities as they are, I can’t see us getting those numbers regularly until the ground is seriously upgraded. Catch 22

Yep Eion, Dino said that was the break even attendance number at games on the podcast.

I was truly speechless, that’s just crazy. The Sharks are a footy team but it’s also a business.

Knowing that breakeven figure and what crowd numbers we’re getting I’m shocked the board haven’t taken some home games away for some guaranteed profits elsewhere. You have to offset the losses somehow. You can’t keep bleeding cash like that.

I would want to know more context around the 16,500 number. If that is the number on top of other revenue streams we generate from the ground...advertising....naming etc, it’s a problem. We will struggle to top, let alone average, 16,500 until there are major upgrades.

For a while I’ve thought that we should take a game or 2 to Allianz. My thinking is that say we’re playing Melbourne, the Cowboys or the Broncs, they’re fans are unlikely to travel to Sydney then travel within Sydney, down to the shire. Whereas if it’s near the city and it’s promoted right, you may get more out of towners to the game.

But you’d also probably get less sharks supporters...
BUT there’s a lot of sharks fans that don’t live in the shire too.

Tough situation... something has to change though. And it can’t be us taking games to ANZ!

I'm no economist, far from it actually, but if someone can correct my figures here please do.

If 16500 is needed to BREAK EVEN THEN judging on last years average we are in more than deep shit.
Last year's home average was 12700.
16500-12700= 3800, people per game need to attend.
What's an average fee to get into all parts of the ground?? I'll use $30 just for an example
3800 x30 = 114000 dollars extra per game needed to BREAK even
114000 x 12 games per season = $1,386,000 per season loss
If this is correct, then that trumpeted $1.5m we are supposedly getting per season from this fire sale will just cover our losses from crowd dollars loss.

I hate to say it but if this is the case, then for survival in Sydney we need to move to the new SFS, get paid to play there, and sell off the rest of the land.
Or somehow get 16,500 season ticket holders.
Someone please please correct me if I'm wrong.

NRL would probably give close to arfamill to go there. Including all the costs etc. They would have to go at least 5 days before.
