The Worst Place On Earth You've Been To

Gary, Indiana looked like a massive shithole when we passed though it too

I came here to say this lol. It always ranks highly when Americans are asked about the worst place in the US.

I was on a road trip and we took a wrong turn out of Chicago and ended up in Gary when our tank was just about empty. We stopped at a gas station but it appeared to be all boarded up with no attendants around. I was the only one of our group aware of Gary's reputation and I think I spooked the group into driving out of there without gas because I was certain we were about to get robbed.

In 2015 I visited New Orleans as part of a North American holiday.

The city itself was pretty disappointing given its reputation and had been redeveloped into a tourist trap.

However on the out skirts on the way to the Bayou there was an abandoned shopping mall and theme park. Looked like something out of a post apocalyptic movie.

I loved NOLA, even the touristy parts were good fun. Ive done the US a couple of times and its one of my favs.

I didnt like San Fran at all, not my vibe. Found New York a tad over rated but we really only did the touristy stuff. Low key loved Phoneix and all that Arizona area.

I actually found Paris to be pretty good. I think we avoided all those beggers and gypsies and the people were quite friendly, had a few big nights there which was good.

Rome was ok but people were rude and refused to help even when we were stuck trying to get to the hotel. Florence was disgusting, hot, it smelt, there were gypsies, crazy people, one person was painted in white and gave me kissing noises trying to sell roses, I wanted to get out of there.

Ive been to Paris 3 times, I absolutely love it and never had an issue. I could walk around Montrmarte for weeks. The Mrs and I went at Xmas time in 2017 and it was great, very quiet and the city was beautiful at that time of year.

I think if you go in the heart of tourist season its going to be a challenge, apparently its the most visited city on earth so can imagine that would be a different experience.

It's a little different because of the artesian baths. I stayed in the motel, they had something like 3 or 4 pools. One pool was hotter than the next until you got into the steaming artesian one. Sort of like you get in New Zealand, only this is in Australia so a bit of a novelty. I also headed further west to Pilliga and Lightning Ridge for more of the same.

And as for Lightning Ridge, for a city boy that's getting towards the edge. Sensational landscape. I was told about places further west if you want to fully disappear. Seems like a good destination if you don't want anyone asking about your past. lol.

My families from Narrabri, I love that North West part of NSW. Beautiful country

Edinburgh is probably my favourite city I've visited in Europe. Really enjoyed the people in the north of England too. Leeds was great fun as a younger bloke

Same. Edinburgh for the W. We did a road trip in Scotland from Edinburgh to Inverness, Skye, Glencoe and back to Edinburgh in just over 2 weeks. Didnt go to a place I didnt love.

My plan when I retire is to go and live there for a whole year to properly experience it.

The hot spring pool at Pillaga might be one of the best kept secrets in the country. I found there was almost no one there. And well looked after too.
I thought it was up near Lightning Ridge.

And there’s a road to a NSW town that cuts through Queensland, the only way in or out.

UFO country Wills. So commonplace, the locals don’t bother reporting them.

Pillaga is about 1 hour's drive west of Narrabri, really just down the road.

Lightning Ridge has a hot pool as well, only a lot hotter. I found it to be a bit too much but that was in summer, might be a better option in the winter months.

*Yep. And if you have a car accident, like my friend did, you can wait hours for another car to come along.Hope a Murdoch doesn’t pick you up.

But as you know, country people are usually great in helping.

Im told a lot of interstate smuggling is done on the castlereagh hwy.

I’m not sure if it’s covered by mobile either. Murdoch is good at picking people up that way!

We did the drive from Edinburgh to Skye at the end of last year, some stunning scenery up there. Stupidly when we planned it, we decided it would be a good idea to drive from Skye to the Lakes District in 1 day. With all the stops and detours we made during that journey we ended getting to Windermere around 10pm. Also had to stop that day and clean up spew after my son decided to be car sick and projectile vomit in every direction 🤣

On the original topic. Hardly the worst place on earth but we did Reykjavík in January and I hated every day there. Admittedly a lot was the weather but I found the city bland, boring and insanely over priced.

Iceland is on my to do list. We finished up in Finland for a week at the end of our trip last year, we were up north but spent the last day in Helsinki before flying home and I found it extremely bland. Been told Oslo is similar as well so must be something about the capital cities in that part of the world as the rest of Europe all the capitals are generally great places.

Iceland is meant to be amazing in summer, its become a bit of an in place to go and apparently crowds at all the main touristy parts are insane in summer. The weather just killed me in winter. Its the windiest habited country in the world so it was moreso that then the cold. We did a 3 day tour which had some cool parts like Diamond Beach, Glacier Lagoon and Blue Ice Cave. The Blue Lagoon is pretty cool aswell. We wanted to do a helicopter tour of some of volcanic parts but they were sold out. Ive done it so not enticed to go back.

My wife has family in Alesund Norway which we spent Xmas in 2017 which was incredible. Doing it with the kids in 2027 and looking to head towards Lofoten aswell.
