Yeah i will be there with my young bloke as well . Bit disappointed that Mann is going to the Nines . Would have thought if he is to be our fullback this year he would have been better playing in this trial game .

It's hard to know the intentions of the club re: the trial match and what combinations etc they are looking at specifically. It's only one trial and the first one at that. We should get to see Mann at fullback for the CS.

By the looks of it they are looking too much at combinations for the trial and nines judging by the selections thus far. Perhaps just getting some game time in some of their legs. They are also probably a bit hamstrung by the rules put in place about having so many of the top money earners having to play in the nines. Agree CS is where we will see a more picture of Mary's intended line up and development of combinations.

Nightingale Named For Redlands Trial

Sat 23rd January, 12:00PM A A

St George Illawarra Dragons winger Jason Nightingale is expecting to be tested against the Wynnum-Manly Sea Eagles after being named for the pre-season fixture at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.
The New Zealand international admits the travelling team will not be underestimating their Queensland Cup opposition and will utilise the game time to test out several new combinations.

“I’m really looking for the trial match and it will be a good test to see where we’re at going up against Wynnum-Manly,” said Nightingale.
“They have a core group of players that would have worked on their own combinations and will be up to scratch.
“For us, it’ll be about working on new combinations and trying to get as many people on the park as possible.”

St George Illawarra Dragons winger Tom Carr cannot wait to run out alongside his teammates after being named for the pre-season fixture against Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.
The local Helensburgh Tigers junior is in the midst of his first pre-season with the first-grade squad after graduating from the Club’s National Youth Competition ranks and is excited by what lies ahead.
“I can’t wait to take to the field as training with the guys has been unbelievable,” said Carr
“Watching them last season after the Under 20’s helped me focus on achieving that goal of playing alongside them.

Havili Named For Redlands Trial

Wed 27th January, 12:00PM A A

St George Illawarra Dragons hooker Siliva Havili is keen to get some game time after being named for the pre-season fixture against Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.
Havili is in the midst of his first pre-season with the Red-and-Whites having arrived during the off-season and admits the trial match will allow him to get a better understanding of how his new teammates play on the field.

“It’s been a very long pre-season and I am looking forward to my first hit-out with the Dragons which will see me playing against Wynnum-Manly,” said Havili.
“It will be good to get some minutes and get a feel for how certain players play, especially with me in the hooking role I like to see what the big boys do.”

Is Widdop playing in the All Stars game? if the CS is indeed the game to trot out our intended line up, will be a shame if he's missing.

Im fairly confident that the squad picked for the CS will relfect the round 1 squad.
History has shown his to be the case.
I know its still a trial, but considering its history, crowd, exposure etc, its a little more than that.

my history is different ... in the last few years they basically run out an entire different team for the second half. a lot of experimenting with players switching positions during the match and different combinations used.
last year there was over 50 players used in total by both teams...
i do think however that by the time this match is played the coach has a 90% certainty of what the round one team will look like, and the shield match may determine the last 10% depending on who stands out..

Agreed mate.

Hence I want Widdop playing in the CS, as would be good to see how our new combinations go.

The CS and All Stars game are both on the 13th of Feb and Widdop has been named in World team (not sure if he's playing?). Frizell was named too, but is out with injury.

If Widdop doesn't play in the CS, he'll likely get start against the Warriors in the NZ trial.

Fair point Rev... I suppose what I should have said is whoever is in the mix, will play in the CS, albeit off the bench etc. Yes. the CS is the yardstick though. Its a tier above "trial" I wanted to say.

Fri 29th January, 03:00PM A A

St George Illawarra Dragons co-captain Gareth Widdop will have his first opportunity to lead the team in the trial fixture against the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls at Pinklands Oval, Redlands on Saturday, February 6.
The England international will skipper the squad named by Head Coach Paul McGregor for the opening pre-season trial fixture, which includes four new signings who will make their first respective appearances for the Club.

Given the Auckland Nines is on this same weekend (click here to view the Dragons team for the Nines), the Dragons squad for the match is also likely to be bolstered by Illawarra Cutters players who are yet to be determined.
Dragons NRL Assistant Coach, Jason Demetriou, will take charge of the team for this fixture in lieu of McGregor who will travel with the Dragons NRL Nines squad to Auckland.
“The Wynnum Manly trial will be our first proper hit-out for the pre-season and it is an opportunity for the Coaching Staff to see players’ are at with their development and for the players’ to put up their hands for ongoing selection,” said McGregor.
“It is difficult to split the squad across the Nines and Wynnum match with them being on the same weekend, but we have split the squad based on what we believed was best for the formats and the individuals with respect to their pre-season build-up and work load”.
“We are very thankful and appreciative to the Redlands Junior Rugby League Club for making this trial against Wynnum possible,” added McGregor.
“We know that the Seagulls have a talented squad, it will be a good early season challenge for our players and one that they are very much looking forward too, especially after a long pre-season”.
Wynnum-Manly Seagulls Squad:
Adam Quinlan, Jason Nightingale, Izaac Thompson
, Taane Milne
, Tom Carr
, Gareth Widdop (c), Leeson Ah Mau, Siliva Havili

We seem to be missing a player, in particular a halfback?

Marshall and Frizell still in rehab.

?Benji and Tyson both had surgery in the off-season and their recovery and workloads are still being managed,? said Dragons Head of Medical and Performance, Tony Ayoub. ?Both are disappointed to not be participating, but we felt that it was too early to have them competing based on where they are at with their recovery and the start of the season proper?.
