Thoughts on society.....

And now, we shall revert back 520 posts to the original question: "I've always wondered, do our genes dictate the person that we become or our environment? Is it a mix of the two?" I think that got a run until about post #11 lol Moffo

Moffo: "Willow, u said 'he [Jesus] enjoyed a good shag'. OK, well, is it something that has to be said, and in those terms? "
Said in what terms? If I had of said that Jesus was child molester I could understand people getting upset but all I said was that he was like anyone and in that, he enjoyed shagging. At least I assume he did.

I just can't get over how people can be so concerned about something so trivial.
Has the word 'shag' suddenly become offensive? Or is the notion that Jesus had sex with his missus just too much to comprehend?

I can assure, its a perfectly normal act and actually makes him a more approachable guy.

Marcus - Is it quite common for Lutherans to have a diverse set of beliefs such as yours? Im only asking that because i would've thought, like most religions, they have a large group of fundamentalist believers. -MFC

I'm not too sure.... I think its just me. The Lutheran church is like the other protestant churches, and the church of course was named after Martin Luther - the one who went against the Catholic church.

Marcus: "If you mean by micro-evolution (which is small changes within a species)then... yes."
So thats a backflip. This means that Apes are evolving then.

Adaptation creates changes an in this we have evolution.

Moffo: "And now, we shall revert back 520 posts to the original question:"
I still think that environment has a huge bearing on our frame of mind as a community.

Ill just ask again, did it have to be said? Was it a bait? I mean honestly mate, were you fishing for a response with that one?

And Jesus had a missues? Well, thats news to me ;)

Seriously, its more of ahistorical belief that saying things such as that isirrerverant (i hope i spelt that right, the flu tablets are definitely kicking in...lol). Yeh, i can see why people may see that as being a bit anal, but thats just how it is.

Agreed, i think environment has a large role to play. It could quite possibly be close to a 50/50 split

Cheers,
Moffo

So you are saying that we evolve into new species?

Has anybody heard about the goat that contains spiders silk in its milk?

Apparently scientists have crosseda spiders silk producing gene to that with a goat. Creating a goat that produces spiders silk in its milk - which will eventually be use to create a product called Biosteel (strongest material ever).

Now... this theory somewhat contradicts evolution. Evolution never took place for this to happen... it was created by scientists which knew how to manipulate gene DNA.

Scientists are the creator of this.... and the probability of goat developing its own spiders silk through natural selection and evolution over millions of years is extremely unlikely (I can't put a figure to it).

Well I saw Jesus Christ Superstar when I was a kid...twice! Once at the Capitol Theatre and again at the St George Leagues Club and in that Trevor White (Jesus) was definitely ron cooting Marcia Hines (Mary Magdalene).
Can you believe that some religious groups actually tried to have that show banned?

Marcus: "So you are saying that we evolve into new species?"
By 'we', do you mean you and I, Marcus? I don't climb trees anymore so its possible.

Evidently, humans have evolved fromhominids. Itsunlikely that we came from Apes.... they seem to have a different branch of evolution.

Nevertheless, there is a bit of evidence to support that one species can change into a new species, given time.
Apart from the huge catalogue of fossilised remains, there is also some living evidence in the world right now.
Monotremes are egg laying mammals which are apparently evolving from one species to another.

Other examples include Frogs which start life as tadpole with gills and turn into air breathing animals.
Lung fish, Dolphins... more examples of animals who are in state of change.
I don't know if you've ever seen a Cormorant bird diving into the water to catch fish...under the water they are swimming like the fish. Its fascinating to watch. Some say they are 'devolving' back to fish but I don't know about that.
There is also a growingevidence to say that birds evolved from reptiles.

Now while a lot of this is speculation, some of it is backed up byevidence and its getting to stage that its becoming too hard to ignore.

Ofcourse there is the other theory that we all came Aliens.

Sorry, I dont understand how Scientists creating biosteel by manipulating DNA blows a hole in the evolution argument...
Scientistshave already or are close to creating life itself...does this make them Gods?

Yes, but no death threats against the filmmakers, a la Salman Rushdie.

As for the skeptics offering money to people who can prove their claims, it would be very easy for them to rebut any claim someone made even with a scientific backing just by offering a different scientists view. Remember the tobacco companies claimed for years that there was no firm scientific evidence to suggest ciggarettes were addictive. I find sceptics just as biased and fanatical about their cause as anybody else. Go to the link below, its just one of hundreds of studies thatseem to show some scientific proof of some kind of paranormal (and I use that word in its broadest sense) activity.

CS: Salman Rushdie....?
LOL.. sorry mate for laughing at that one mate but it is somewhat irrelevant.
You seem to think that I was having a swipe at western religion so came back with some veiled anti-islam comment.
It really wasn't what I was thinking.

JoeD:
I like the Aliens theory myself as well.. it seems as good as idea.
But there lies the inevitable question, 'who made the Aliens?'.. :D

I understand that the skeptics society aren't interested in trying to discredit people. They are more interested in exposing people who come out with claims that are designed to taked advantage of the gullible.

They offer$1MIL to anyone who can prove their claims and this is done under strict guidelines that are supposed to ensure a level playing field without bias.

Its been there on offer for years and no one has won the prize as yet.
Thats my understanding anyway, just from what I read and what I've heard in interviews.

Paranormal probably isn't the best word for it (thats why i said in the broadest sense of the word)but they do claim that they can alter the outcomes of conflicts just by thinking about it.

Is that what they're saying?

I thought they were saying that everyone meditated, the world would be a more peaceful place. Hard to disagree with them on that.

But if they are saying they are using telepathy to stop wars and famine etc, then they better try harder then because it aint working.
