Thoughts on Trent Barrett.

Lol, I would have been truly disappointed had someone not been pissed off. I've exceeded my own aspirations.

Re the 'dumbest post' jibe, were you referring what was to follow, or the quoted par?

Edit: The question is rhetorical, btw.

Bottle, you've been standing in the sun too long, with a dangerous amount of piss contained therein. but good to see you admit to being a troll.

Admitting no such thing Rexxxxxy (sorry, lost control of the x button), and I wish I was pissed. Just knew it would rankle 'Man fans'. I'm guessing you're one such.

You're allowed to be, doesn't mean I have to be. He had plenty, just not as much as he would want us to believe. As long as he believes it though. All good.

Rule 1- dont assume anything bottle. Nothing to do with Choc.

Everyone wanted Trent to be the best that he could be. To go on and achieve his manifest destiny, and alas that was not to be. We all wanted what was best for him.

How good was he the year he won Player of the Year and scored all those tries (19?) for the Steelers. Then the best for him was to play in a grand final team, where he was a 1/2.

Even the Wok recognised that to be his position, he called him the world's biggest halfback

I often wondered if he had someone in his family -- in his ear -- second guessing the coach, bad mouthing the club?

At least he didn't write an anti Dragons column like some. That's something I suppose.

I think I've seen you around bottle or at least in a movie - where you were in some fat girls bottom. what did the IMDB say? "An eloquent performance."

Similar to many, I never questioned his effort for the club. He played hard every week and wanted to win badly, he just wasn't the player who could make it happen ala Fittler or Daley, whom he was always compared to.

One of the best rep footballers I've ever seen. He f**king dominated for NSW & AUS, so his ability was outstanding, its just that his ability was ball running. Not tactical kicking or ball playing.

I never hated or maligned him. I just though he didn't produce for us when he needed to. At rep level, as said earlier, he could just play his game.

Struggling with off-season ay GDK?

I was a big fan oh him from 1996-2002 although I think one big problem is with the exception of Mathew Head he never really played under a good half (which is why he killed it in the rep scene).

He won the Dally M playing 5/8 and he carved up at 5/8 playing for NSW and Australia so why some of you think he was a lock is beyond me?!

He had such a beautiful pass and a superb cut out ball...he could definitely ball play as well as run...

The undoing of Trent Barrett was being coached by Andrew Farrar and Nathan Brown. Under Farrar, we adopted the flat attack style (ala Melbourne in the Chris Anderson/Kimmorley days) which never worked. He can ball play out wide with time and space but working in the middle of the field trying to put guys like Ryles and Thompson into holes was just stupid. Brown tried something similar with similar results.

This is a player who would have prospered under the right coach...a simple game play and natural ability would have been enough for Trent. He had size, speed, vision and the smarts to be a true great of the game, but he was never allowed the opportunity to hang back and inject himself when the time was right. The amount of make shift halfbacks that he played with during his career is alarming.

I had a lot of time for Trent and I will never forget the ball he threw to Cooper one handed and falling to put us over in the corner at the Show Ground vs the Dogs in week one of the finals series in 2001. If I remember correctly he only played after appealing a six week suspension of which was later overturned.

In saying all of that, given that he finished his career with Cronulla he can get f**ked and I hope he never lands a role of any kind at the club in the future

Great ball runner but not a ball player's arsehole.

Wok once said something like "Barrett has no vision. He wouldn't see water in a river"

You obviously missed that pass I referred to in my earlier post...his vision was fine

Rexxxxxy, I'm going to ignore your rule 1 and assume that this is another insult. However it is too cryptic for one of my intellectual capacity. I live a sheltered life and don't get out much, and I'm hardly a Stratton or a Pomerantz, so some obtuse reference to a fat bottomed girl in a movie is too difficult for me to grasp. Please stick with (edited) dumbest post ever quips or 'smash your own face in' type comments, these I get. However I'll take a stab, at the intended insult, not the fat bottomed girl (although I like big butts, I can not lie). Are you suggesting that I am as relevant as a verbose G string? If not, Dafuq??

Cartoons are more my speed, so your av I recognise. I'll resist the temptation to stoop to your level and start issuing insults with suggestions about what I'd like to see happen to you at the hands of Bullwinkle, in a darkened room, with plenty of lube, a sex toy or two, and a copy of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' on the sidetable. But enough of that.

I'm assuming (again) that I'm to read Wok's 'biggest half in the world' comment as a commendation on Barrett playing the HB role. However apparently Wok also said
"Barrett has no vision. He wouldn't see water in a river"
according to Moik. Whatever. Wok is entitled to his opinion (note that sentiment, it's very magnanimous of me) whatever it may be. So am I, and you, et al.

As it happens my opinion is that Barrett's carreer, and Saints fortunes at the time, were hampered by Barrett not playing at 5/8 when it seemed to me to be where his obvious skill set sat best. Later, as he bulked up, I would have liked to have seen him at lock. But the younger, more skillful man was a 5/8 for mine. Of course this begs two questions -
- Who would have played HB?
- Where to have played Choc?
I have an opinion on the latter, but that's for another thread and time perhaps.

Anyway I'll keep an eye out for you next time I make it to the movies. Keep a seat for me, you can explain some of the more complex sub-plots to me.

Curious why this thread was made, was it in regards to him as a potential Coach?

I dont think we could have asked much more of him as a player, inspirational captain who would flatten players in defence and really lift the team. If he could have had a partner i.e. Mundine stay with him for a few more years, god knows what we could have achieved.

Always liked Baz. The only real blemish on his record for me was the "I've joined Cronulla so I can win a comp" line. Many many lols from that.

Trent is one of my favourites to wear the red V. Fantastic player who played with alot of heart. Copped alot of unnecessary criticism from fans. Best 5/8 to play in the red V since I started following them.

Problem with Baz was when he was on the field players around him just sat back and waited for him to do everything. When he was not on they field they all stepped up and people came to the conclusion that the Saints played better without him which was so untrue. If all players stepped up when he was on the field they would have been untouchable. This was why at Rep level he stood out so much cause he just had to concentrate on his own game. Alot of other supporters from other clubs which I have spoken to about Trent would say the same.

Since he was 5/8 he never really had a consistent halfback. They all seemed to get injured or he would be injured. Barrett / Head combo would have been awesome but both were busted up most of the time and they did not spend many games together.

He was a good player, not great, but good. I agree with Slippery that he copped a lot of unnecessary criticism.

I think John Raper was a bit harsh on him with the "heart" comment.

However, what used to annoy me about Baz was his kicking game. It was terrible. No one put the ball dead more than him.

Just how atrocious was that kicking game. Time after time, just enough pace to be a minimum of twelve feet ahead of the nearest Saints chaser, just enough roll to stop cold on its last roll over the deadball line.

I was often a harsh armchair critic of Baz. He was good, just never quite good enough to take a game by the scruff of the neck and win it when it was in the balance or we were playing from behind. But my best memory of him was the post game interview after the first semi in 2005 and we'd beaten the Scum. He had no energy left to even speak.

It was 18 he scored for the Steelers in 1998

IMO the reason why we missed out in 05 was we peaked too early we were due for a loss. In 06 we did play good in patches especially at the back end of the year but sadly we bumped into Melbourne in the preliminary final and that was a game we were never going to win
Looking back at 05,we were very average against the scum in week 1 of the finals which worried me going into the game v the Tigers.
Back on Trent, i would love to have him playing for us now.Thought at times he tried too hard and probably felt the weight of expectations many times. Also hated seeing him play for the scum.
