Tigers board baulks at proposed contract extensions for Benji

Just hours before Benji Marshall returns to the Wests Tigers' starting side against North Queensland at Leichhardt Oval, chief executive Stephen Humphreys will hold talks with the five-eighth's manager about his future at the club.
Marshall's desire to sign a long-term deal with the club has been complicated by coach Mick Potter's decision last week to dump him to the bench, potentially jeopardising the prospect of the Kiwi international finishing his career as a one-club player.
In another potential sticking point, Humphreys announced his resignation on Saturday following the Tigers' eighth straight defeat, a 54-10 shellacking at the hands of South Sydney.
Humphreys has signalled his intention to leave the club in good shape and has made retention and recruitment a priority before he departs in two months. However, it is understood there are factions on the board who are opposed to parting with a large chunk of the club's salary cap on a player struggling to regain his best form.

Marshall is contracted until the end of 2015 but has a clause in his contract allowing for a renegotiation following any increase in the salary cap. Tigers powerbrokers viewed the discussions as an opportunity to also extend his tenure, on a deal believed to be worth $4 million over five years. However, it's likely the Tigers will table a revised - and probably lower - offer for the next two years and put extension discussions on the backburner.
It's unclear whether Marshall will get an update on the talks before marking up on the world's best pivot, Johnathan Thurston, later that night.
''It's a situation that needs to be watched because Benji is a great and talented footballer, a very valuable property,'' Tigers chairman Mike Bailey said. ''We are intending to get down to business on that before too much longer.''
In a further development off the field, Bailey wrote to ARLC boss David Smith to formally invite him to propose a new corporate structure for the Tigers.
After years of infighting, the Balmain and Western Suburbs factions have resolved to work together with the league to improve their corporate governance. One of the first things the ARLC is likely to review is the policing of rotating chairman, where a member of each faction chairs the joint-venture club for 12 months at a time. Smith and commission chairman John Grant expressed reservations about the structure at a meeting with Tigers officials on May 2, and the joint-venture club's directors resolved to ask for the ARLC's input at a board meeting last week.
''I've actually written a letter back to the league to thank them for the time they spent with us and tell them we're only too happy to hear from them on the various fronts that were raised in the meeting in terms of what they wanted to put to us,'' Bailey said.
''We're asking for that assistance and guidance, and we will listen to what they have to say. It will then come back to the board to make a decision as to where we go from there. It's in the post now, so to speak, and we are happy to hear from them.''
The club expected to appoint a recruitment firm to find a replacement for Humphreys next week.

The Wests side is holding out,now that Humphrey's is going they might just get to hold out longer, and rightly so considering the amount of money and benji's form.

I really hope they are not just being re-active to the whinging fans (myself included). I love nothing more than having a dig at players who are playing like shit but I and nobody on these forums can say they are anything more than "armchair experts".

That being said, if they are going to be getting rid of Benji they better back it up with some GOOD signings. What did we back Gibbs, Fifita, Ellis, Ryan and Heinington up with?
Blair, Pettyborne and Thomson.......WTF

The ball is in Marshalls court now, produce some form and the clubs interest will improve. Lets face it, its been a long time since Marshall dominated a game of football and you pay big chunks of your cap to players who dominate more often than not.

Benji will attract very healthy offers from other football clubs, especially those who are struggling but I hope the club sticks firm with Benji

My $0.02 - I could live with Sironen/Brooks/Anasta as our halves for next 2 years. And using the big money Marshall is asking for, to buy some quality forwards.

Marshall's form this year doesn't warrant a new contract. Bring on a cleanout of Tuqiri, Moltzen, Galloway, Utai, Lawrence, Marshall....

Previously I would have built the team around Farah, Marshall & Woods. Not now.

Shame that wasn't his plan in previous years...

Seems like a dumb idea to me. Why do it before the game which Benji has to prove himself in?

This should be a short conversation. Show us some form and we will show you the money.

It's as simple as that.

If Tauber doesn't like it then he can piss off and take Marshall with him.

Sick of this whole circus.

Am I the only one that thinks that having a meeting like this only hours before our match seems crazy ??? Especially when it involves someone as 'sensitive' as Benji Marshall.

Agreed. Also agree with hybrid tiger's comment.

WT are actually in a strong negotiating situation. Marshalls form is down and has been down for some time. The renegotiation and pay increase in the current contract still have to be agreed by both parties. Benji's form doesn't warrant us falling over ourselves to keep him. WT have other options for the future with young guns coming through. Time to move Benji on I'd say for my 2 cents worth.

I love Benji and I get sick of reading the Internet rumours about him but surely we have to try and pay him what he is worth rather than going all out to get his signature.

Was Marshall's benching because of poor form? Have heard some other reasons being bandied about anybody else heard anything?

Contract negotiations between Benji Marshall and Wests Tigers are officially on hold as both the team and the representative five-eighth attempt to turn their fortunes around.
Marshall's manager Martin Tauber met outgoing chief executive Stephen Humphreys on Friday lunchtime, just hours before the player took the field against North Queensland at Leichhardt Oval.
With so much focus on the team's woes, as well as Marshall's controversial benching against South Sydney in round 10, both parties agreed to shelve talks for several weeks at least.
''The club is still very keen to retain Benji,'' Tauber said after Friday's talks. ''But they want to give him the chance to focus on his football and regain his lost mojo. With everything that's happened in the past week, we've agreed to put talks on hold.''

The Tigers have the bye in round 12, after which negotiations about Marshall's future will resume. What appears likely now is that talks about an extension of Marshall's contract, which ends in 2015, have been put on hold indefinitely. When Humphreys does meet Tauber again, the pair will be negotiating only an upgrade of his present deal.
Marshall's desire to see out his career with the Tigers has been complicated by his benching by coach Mick Potter, not to mention the boardroom factions at the merged club and the departure of Humphreys. Marshall has a clause in his contract allowing for a renegotiation following any increase in the salary cap.

coll calm heads are prevailing, common sense.

Seems foreign.

I think this is Potter's influence on the team. From what I have seen he seems like a calm and sensible sort of leader. Apart from bringing Farah off the field in the Manly game all of Potters decisions in my opinion have been very sensible.
