I think our club, as do all the so-so clubs, run the perennial problem of signing young players identified as potential and then running through the development phases and hopefully into first grade if they stay. The problem is when they reach that first grade stage fending off other clubs, particularly the stronger more popular clubs then coming to pick the fruit off the tree.
We can't get it right all the time, some don't make the grade, others do but choose to go elsewhere for the first grade experience and greater opportunity with the big clubs. Unless the player is a local junior there is no real loyalty to WT, even if a local you can't take it as granted. Tuilagi showed no loyalty and went for the better opportunity at Manly without giving WT a chance to match their offer. He made his choice, no point carrying on. However unless he is needed in the side I'd now be giving preference to this staying and of equal capability. That said, he is safe in the squad at thee moment with no real pressure from others to take his spot.
I don't think anyone dropped the ball here, we made him a solid offer, Manly came in with a better one and he signed the first opportunity he had without giving WT a chance to match it. Case over, he would seem to be the type where he was stuck way behind a strong Melbourne squad, went to WT to get opportunity and be noticed and at the first opportunity went to a stronger club for better opportunities. The way to get ahead for many players, WT used simply as a way to a means. Matterson all over again, just more polite.
