Somebody mentioned earlier in the week that Mary could at least be remembered as promoting the juniors , in this his final year . ( ? ) Hopefully that will be the case , and as
Tru-Saint said picks his best 17 on form .

That being the case Tom Lafai should bide his time in the Cutters , as Tanne Milne has shown enough this season to warrant a place in the centres .

And should Mary listen to this new panel , of Coyne and company ,then the combination of experience and youth , will ensure that the Dragons shall have a far better year in 2017 , but as we all realise , only if the right selections are made .
Gareth there lays our season ( only if the right selections are made .[/QUOTE] ) Surely that is why Coyne and company were appointed ......

Personally I would have this as my backline.

1). Dufty.
2). MacDonald.
3). Aitken.
4). Dugan.
5). Milne.
6). Widdop.
7) Hutch.
17) Mann (any back position he can cover).

How nice would it be to have two ball tall strong wingers again (metres down our own end, speed, jumping ability, did I mention speed, intimidation, off loading ability and speed).

I absolutely love Nighty but if picking our best backline I can't see how we can leave the others out.

If forwards do their job and Hutch can control / direct just like a solid halfback then I think you will see the best out of both Widdop and Dufty for ball playing and hole running.

Also with Hutch and Dugan now in the front line our smallest front line defenders would be Aitken / Widdop so not many small bodies across the park.

I actually like our best 17 for next year provided we pick our best 17.

However the only way this will work is if they do everything opposite to what Mary tells them.

If Mary picks teams like he did this year then we will have Lafai, Marketo and Hutch will be dropped by Round 3.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a competition to Coach the team for a week, I'm in please, couldn't do any worse.

Hazzbeen , we agree , however my point was , will he listen to to the panel ?
Just how much sway will the new selectors ( ? ) have over the coach , who will have the final word - the panel or the coach - that is what concerns me .

Let's hope that they are not there just to make the ' cake look pretty ' , as it will be the same chef who is doing the baking .

1 Dugan - Dufty as backup
2 MacDonald
3 Milne
4 Aitken
5 Nightingale.
6 Nona - Widdop needs a wake-up call
7 Mann - I believe to be our best option

2010,

Mary needs to aim up and pick on form and potential. He will not be coach in 2018, we all know that.

Question beckons will he pick the team that is best for 2017, or will he go with his " tried and tested ". The later worries me.

Whilst many think 2017 is a write off, and it may be, i think potentially we have the stock to make a real statement. I wish Mary uses the resources around him, takes advice and puts the best 17 on the paddock each week.

Being the ultimate optimist, i think we have the players and depth to make 2017 more than just a building phase.
Irrespective of the coach and his lack of a competitive game plan, not to mention a no idea approach to team selection with seniority plus marketo as a justified process, I still want this great club to be competitive and admire a fellow optimist during the difficult times.

Does anyone else feel that Flo is a victim of tries off kicks not counting?
I mean he's so safe under the bomb that I guess he's devalued if he's not actually preventing anything real.

Anyway, I tend to agree. One of my favorite players of all-time but if Dufty goes to the back and Dugan to the centres, Milne to the wing is an obvious solution... if he can defend well enough out there.

Wish I had that sort of confidence...

A completely different half pairing would make things interesting but I (like many others) don't expect the coach to do anything that's not run-of-the-mill.

This shared fear of the coaches narrow mindedness (and boredom) is clearly the premise for Tom's engaging and highly analytical (with a touch of paranoia) engaging thread.

Nice backline, I would be very happy if that was our starting lineup. I think Lafai is done though. He won't get near the nrl squad especially if dugan moves to the centres.
