Tim Mander and Foxsports

I am interested to know how they managed to c**k up that try last night that was awarded to Nick Kenny. Mander had a number of looks that were inconclusive, awarded a very shaky and and then... lo and behold... Fox immediately ran an other angle that showed it was no try.

In the days of digital production and multi-camera shoots there is no way that the shot that showed Folau losing the ball was not available. Is the onus on Mander to call for all available angles? Are the Foxsports production team responsible for letting him know that there is another angle available?

It is rather ordinary that the moment the try was awarded they cut to another shot that would have most likely made Mander change his mind. That would mean that they guys in the OB truck had that angle available, and if so, why wasn't it shown to the video ref before he made his decision?

Something stinks really badly in the NRL refereeing ranks at the moment.

They pick and choose which angle they want, like you say it doesnt just magically become available to them.

Like the wide, grandstand type angle that lets you see the both backlines and the 10 metres. We see flashes of it once or twice a game... For once id love to watch a whole match with that angle

Robert Finch's explanation.. This is the icing on the cake.. Bring on the independant commission now and get these idiots out of our game whose primary interest is to look after the interests of News Limited.

Referees' boss Finch backs end result

Referees boss Robert Finch says the method and not the end result was up for debate following the controversial awarding of a try to Brisbane prop Nick Kenny in Monday night's NRL thriller at Suncorp Stadium.

Kenny was given the green light on a try that put the Broncos in front late in the 34-30 loss to the Sydney Roosters, despite inconclusive replays being made available to video referee Tim Mander as to how team-mate Israel Folau lost the ball in the lead-up.

The impact of the four-pointer was lessened when Shaun Kenny-Dowall crossed for his fourth try of the night to cap a remarkable Roosters win.

But Finch backed the end result.

"We've had a look at it in super slow mo and I'm comfortable it should have gone benefit of the doubt," Finch said.

"The referee told me he would have given it a try if it had gone back as ref's call.

"I would have preferred benefit of the doubt because quite obviously there's a bit of doubt there.

"Arch (on-field referee Tony Archer) said he would have given it a try.

"He'd seen what he'd seen but he also needed to check who grounded the ball afterwards because the Broncos player and the Roosters player were pretty close grounding it."

There was also controversy with Mander not given access to the most telling replay of the play from the open side, which showed the tangle of arms as Folau desperately attempted to ground the ball.

"Basically there was an error made by one of their video-tape operators," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley told reporters.

The precedence has been set. If any player drops a ball in general play with the referee uncertain as to whether it was a strip or not, it should be an automatic penalty to the attacking team

These guys are so out of touch with reality. Bring on the independent commission and get rid of all of these clowns.

What a f**king genius Finch is.
I agree with the OP though, why the f**k was that angle not made available to the video ref when he was deciding?
This reminds me of a Saints versus Easts game a few years back, when a "try" by a certain individual was awarded, despite one angle, that was looked at only once and not looked at again, showing it clearly was not.

Furthermore, if a premiership is going to come down to a video ref decision, should we not say "ok everyone, cool your f**king heels, we are getting the image rendered (this removes all jerkyness etc from it) and will decide in super slow motion with no missing frames, this will mean no f**k ups, not whinging, no bitching and no geniused interviews with Finch.

so how do you explain it every other time they make a bad decision you dope.

St George Illawarra was gifted last years minor premiership on the back of one of the worst video referee decisions ever seen. Its an NRL wide problem.

This is exactly how they are ruling it now. Players just drop the ball cold but if they think there was a hand anywhere near it they blow their whistle.

The stripping penalties have gotten out of hand.

Nice choice of words :D

But I agree whole heartedly. And I don't care in the slightest how long it takes for the video reff to replay the footage on several different angles to make sure he's got it right. IT'S WHAT YOU'RE THERE FOR.

At least that decision didn't have a convenient video error that led to the conclusive angle being hidden away until after the decision was made. It was just straight out moronic.

So is leaving out the wrong video angle. The conspiracy theories are seriously stupid and unintelligent. Its obvious the problem applies across the board, and issues arent only with video ref's.

The decisions on the ground are becoming a farce too. Can you explain to me why Corey Parker was penalised for the contact on Braith Anasta? Why don't the NRL just tell players not to rush up on kickers anymore. Thats where its headed.

This rubbish about not hitting kickers is f**king soft. If you don't want to get hit don't kick the ball, or stand deeper.

Finch needs to go. That's the reason the refereeing standard has dropped so much, he's accepting their mediocrity and making excuses for it.

Isn't that what it has been for the last 10 years?

Any dropped ball is a penalty if a tackler is remotely near the ball.
