Don't mind Cummins as captain either. Probably the 'ssfe' choice CA will go for and be approved by broadcasters and sponsors.

He's just got to not bowl himself to break point. Which Paine was on the way to doing anyway.

The problem with fast bowlers as captain is workload, though.

Cummins already carries the attack. At least now he can get a breather between overs/spells and just switch half off down at fine leg or something. Make him captain and he never gets that, he's always gotta be switched on. Are we gonna burn him right out?

Yeah, that's the risk I worry about.

Problem I see with Head is that he's still got to establish himself in the team. Worrying about being Captain as well could be a bridge to far. On the flip side, it might be exactly what he needs.

I can't ever remember a time we picked a player just because they were a captain. And that included the Australia 3rd team which played when wcc players were barred.

That's something the poms did and Brearley was an exceptional leader.

Even after Hughes went down, Border was chosen even though he didn't want it. He was the only one in the team with a guaranteed place.

The less said about fast bowlers captaining the better. Once again no Aussies.

I think we've seen that wicketkeeping and captaincy is too much as well with Paine's blunders.

Aussie cricket on verge of civil war as Tassie fumes over ‘appalling’ Tim Paine treatment

Cricket Tasmania has condemned the treatment of Tim Paine by Cricket Australia in a fiery statement after he stood down as captain of the Test team follow a sexting scandal.

Paine relinquished his role as captain during a teary press conference last Friday after it emerged he was investigated by Cricket Australia over claims of sexual harassment after sending an unsolicited X-rated picture to a then colleague.

He said he would continue to play for the Test team despite quitting the captaincy but Cricket Tasmania has leapt to his defence, calling the anger around the way he was treated as “palpable” and the worst it has seen since Bill Lawry more than 50 years ago.

Lawry was infamously dropped from the Australian Test team mid-series despite being captain and only found out when the axing was made public.

In a statement, Cricket Tasmania said: “At its meeting on 22 November, 2021, the Cricket Tasmania Board unanimously expressed its continuing support of Tim Paine and condemnation of his treatment by Cricket Australia.”

Cricket Tasmania Chairman Andrew Gaggin said: “In conversations I have had in recent days it is clear that the anger amongst the Tasmanian cricket community and general public is palpable. Tim Paine has been a beacon for Australian cricket over the past four years and instrumental in salvaging the reputation of the national team after the calamity of Cape Town. Yet, at a time when CA should have supported Tim, he was evidently regarded as dispensable. The treatment afforded to the Australian Test captain by Cricket Australia has been appalling, and the worst since Bill Lawry over 50 years ago.

“The Cricket Tasmania Board reaffirmed its view that Paine should not have been put in a position where he felt the need to resign over an incident that was determined by an independent inquiry at the time to not be a breach of the Code of Conduct and was a consensual and private exchange that occurred between two mature adults and was not repeated.

“Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim on and off the field, and is very pleased to see his impressive return in the Second XI game Tasmania is currently playing against South Australia.”

For it to have been covered up, there's needs to have been wrongdoing...

Tassie have small state syndrome too though

Tim Paine's immediate playing future is in doubt after Cricket Tasmania this morning announced the former Test captain would take a leave of absence from all cricket "for the foreseeable future".

A week after he resigned as Test captain, Cricket Tasmania released a statement this morning announcing that Paine was taking a break from the game.

Paine had played a second XI game for Tasmania this week and had been named to play a Marsh One-Day Cup game for the Tigers today.

"Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future," the statement read.

"Tim’s decision makes him unavailable for selection for today’s Marsh One-Day Cup match against Western Australia. His place in the squad will be taken by Charlie Wakim.

"Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer."

Paine had been expected to join Australia's Test squad in Queensland this weekend.

His manager, James Henderson tweeted confirmation that Paine was taking an "indefinite mental health break" adding that he was "extremely concerned for his and (wife) Bonnie's well-being".
