Tim Smith

He had a great game today set up nearly all the trys with excellent passes. Excellent passing and kicking game against a good team. I believe he may be ready next year.

He (Tim Smith) directs the team around very well tells the forwards when to run and so on, he is constantly barking out orders. Witt AWOL once again in the 2nd half. Although he did have a good game last week.

There were a few times last night that we seemed completely lost....we badly need an onfield director/leader to tell guys what to do.

Did anyone note the amount of times that Witt passed from dummy half last night. Seems pretty apparent that will be how PJ will be used next year, as half-back but getting in to dummy half a lot. With that style of play it puts a lot of responsibility on the five-eighth to be a ball-player (which is why I still don't understand how Smith thought he could combine a dual lock strategy with an interchangable/half hooker but anyways).

Jake, you seem to be Tim Smith's number one fan, how do you think he'd go playing that kind of five-eighth role? I notice a number of times you've said he's a genuine half and gets lost at 5/8. Is his defence up to standing a little wider.

nah I dont think he is any good at 5/8, and he is not the strongest in defence but he does the job. He probably needs to work on his running game a little

In Witt's defence:

* The coach (God, you're an idiot) pulls off his 5/8 and replaces him WITH WAGON halfway through the first half (ironically, the ONE TIME Wags passes the ball, Widders crashes over for a try)

* The lazy arsed forwards (Hindy, Caylo and Stapo excluded) just didn't do enough

* We gave the Panthers SO MANY METRES, and yet we gained so little (mainly due to the fact Witt was the sole playmaker)

* Thorman's attack is good, but HE SUCKS IN DEFENCE

* GRAHAM AND MCKINNON SCREWED UP BIG TIME

You contradict yourslef. First you blame Smith for taking off the smaller 5/8 then you say we were getting dominated in the forwards. In order to overcome the big Penrith forwards you need to have big players. Thus replacing Cayless with Thorman. I dont belive the way to beat Penrith is to go tit for tat in attack, its to get on top of their forwards and let your defence do the talking. Unfortunately for Parra we gave them some soft tries.

Yeah but Cayless is hardly big anyway.

What I meant is that Widders or Wagon or Stapleton should have come off. But why take off your 5/8 and replace him with Wagon, which then places enormous pressure on your young halfback to play even better?

I mean, at one stage both Hopkins and Webster were on, as well as Thorman, and that time coincided with the time we started to make a comeback.

Plus I was being nice - I didn't think Caylo played that well at all. He lacked fitness (which is comprehensible) and was dominated by Penno's forwards. He was isnpirational though.

lol...he's a lot bigger then Thorman.

Young Halfback? He's almost completed his second year of first grade footy. If he wants to take ownership of this side he's gunna have to stand up on his own. Dont get me wrong I rate Witty. I think he's a great player but he does go missing at times.

By the way Webster was on when they took Thorman off anyway.

Yes, Cayless is bigger than Thorman, but he is comparably smaller to Penrith's forwards, and they are the ones he has to run to and tackle, not Thorman (or am I not being told something here?).

And Witt IS young - he's 20 years old. Yes, he's in his second year of First Grade, but how many games has he played? Not many.

I rate him too - but I think he plays best with a good 5/8. Thorman is a good 5/8 (no, Brian, NOT a halfback). Webster, although he i a halfback as well as a hooker, is a better hooker IMHO.

Look, I'm proud of the boys' effort. It just bugs me that we EASILY could have and should have won the match, but cockups by the team cost us big time.

If Tim Smith is not a better player then Witt at this very moment then I have never watched a game of Rugby League. Smith had a blinder last night. I am comparing apples with apples and I can say that Witt has NOT been as dominating as Smith when he was in Premier league earlier this year. Assuming that PJ marsh is not the starting halfback I believe we may be in the position like Saints with Head and Firman, where Tim Smith will overtake Witt and we may have to release Witt from his contract. By the way how old is Tim Smith?

I have watched him closely over the year and he is better than Witt- who should be released-he is too relaxed for NRL and not dominating enough.

If he is a talented half then I would advise him to leave. Brian Smith has stuffed halve combos his whole coaching career and this bloke will never get a run whilst Wagon's at the club.

Yeah? And then once he becomes as good as Willie Tonga you'll be having a go at Smith for releasing him.

Tonga was the best reserves centre all year last year , Witt hasnt played nearly as well in the lower grade!
Do you watch any games?

What has that got to do with anything? Potentially he's still a very classy player. We can't just go releasing players willy nilly just because they are inconsistent. The whole side is inconsistent, Witt just needs the others around him to set a better platform.

Also in Witt's defense, one of the Panthers (I think it was Priddis) tried to take his head off in the first half... may have something to do with why he was so quiet after that
