Titans first game

INK - When is the last time the broncos made any concessions for the good of the game?

They didn't give the Cowboys their first ever home final match above having it played at suncorp Stadium or in Sydney? compare that to the "cooperation" the Broncos had to put up with to get the NSWRL/ARL to play finals games outside of Sydney.

They played it at DFS, not Suncorp

Umm yes I said ABOVE having it at Suncorp as in they could have pushed to have it at Suncorp Stadium but rather pushed for the Cowboys to have it at Dairy Farmers.

Please tell me how many games were played at Telstra in Rd 1 this year?? It was 3. Not to mention other Sydney games being played that weekend. You don't see Tigers kicking up a stink about money they might be losing. If brisbane's fans are loyal they aren't going to lose any of them.

The Broncos are being arrogant. An extra 5,000 odd fans for Brisbane's figures beats about an extra 20,000 fans from the opening weekend of 2007?? I can't understand the logic. The NRL are within their rights to schedule 2 games at Suncorp in one weekend. Next we will see Brisbane complaining because GC have a home game rostered on the same weekend as a Brisbane home game.

The Tigers knew when they signed the deal with Telstra that TS got to choose the choice games for their ground, and Leichhardt & Cambo got whats left. They get a guaranteed gate if 3 blokes and a dog show up, and a % over a set amount.
The Tigers knew they would be sharing that ground as well when they chose to use it.
The Titans have their own ground...they are supposed to be using it are they not?
Yet another special concession for the new boys.
The Titans want to share, the Broncos dont - theyre protecting their interests as i'd expect them to...its not prerogative or responsibility to put the NRLs interests before their own.

This incident will be just another in a season full of GC special request/concessions, you watch, by the end of the season everyone will be sick of the f**kers.

Probably, i'm already a bit sick of them, but why should the NRL sacrifice an extra 20,000 supporters because Brisbane don't want the competition. Things should be done with the best interests of the game in mind, why do you think the Bulldogs didn't take the NRL to court over the 2002 salary cap? Because if we did then there would probably be 4 teams left in the comp within the next few years.

As someone said earlier, Brisbane don't own Suncorp Stadium. It is property of the QLD Government. It would also be within the best interests of the government that the stadium get used instead of sitting there empty while 30,000 would be spectators are forced to watch the game on the TV.

And the point is, why are Brisbane so worried about it? They have had no competition for years, and finally when there might be 2 games in one weekend at Brisbane they wanna kick up a stink about it. They are the premiers, they should have no trouble attracting crowds, especially if the games aren't on the same day. I reckon heaps of people would do the double that weekend if it does goes ahead.

It says on Fox Sports News channel (on the scrolling bar thing) that Brisbane have requested to play the Titans in round 1.

Honestly considering the NRL copped so much flack this year for a drop in crowd numbers they should be doing everything possible to maximise crowds in season 2007, and one way to ensure that is to not let the Broncos and Titans both play at Suncorp in Round 1.

Both games by their own right will draw 45,000 - 50,000 each. Together I'd say around 40,000 mark. Thats 10,000 - 20,000 less people attending RL between the two games, thats a lot of people, especially when say you look outside of Brisbane and a crowd of 15-20K is considered a pretty good crowd.

Send the Titans anywhere else, they will help that team boost their crowds round 1, perhaps give them to Canberra or Melbourne, it would be a nice kick along for them.

The Brisbane arrogance comes out once again in this case. Im sure the NRL would much rather 2 x 40,000 crowds rather than 1 x 45,000 and 1 x 20,000 crowd. Not everything is about you Brisbane, premiership or not.
Exactly. What is good for the game is not necessarily good for the Broncos or vice versa. It's fine to balance the needs of the NRL, Broncos and Titans but sometimes one has take a hit for the other. It's called healthy competition.

True but that doesn't necessarily mean having the Broncos play at home in round one. They've been around for twenty years and a one year disruption to their three year old "tradition" with the Cowboys is hardly a big deal. On the other hand the Titans are going to play their debut match just once. Who's going to appreciate and fondly remember that match more, the people of Melbourne or the people of SE Qld? Where does it do more good for the Titans and the game of RL in securing their fanbase for the future, Melbourne or SE Qld? If the Broncos aren't willing to accomodate this once off circumstance, and they don't have to by any means, then the Titans are happy to take the hit of playing on the same weekend to ensure they are born in front of their own fans. And the Broncos can just lump it.

Anyway, how can he Broncos demand a 'opening tradition' with NQ at suncorp? What chance would Parra have of demanding the same opener at Parra Stadium v Canterbury or Manly?

Brisbane can f**k off. They once shafted Suncorp by breaching advertising laws, and then left for ANZ for a decade! Suncorp wasn't built for the Broncos. It was built for Rugby League.

Brisbane can piss off and start their own comp again. The NRL should demand they play the Western Reds at the WACA.

I can't wait for the Titans crowd to dwarf theirs!

In 2004 when they moved the semi-final to Townsville.

I bet you can't name another. No club has been more selfish, and more destructive. No one gets even close.

They haven't demanded it. Both they and the Cowboys have requested it. Just as the Titans have requested their first match at Suncorp in Round 1. Neither request should be ignored or refused simply out of spite or because it is team X asking for it - that's the bad old days of the NSWRL administration. If Canterbury and Parra wish to make such a request that's entirely their business. There's no reason why the the NRL shouldn't try and accomodate such requests on the understanding that they won't always be able to or it might serve the game better not to. In this case they *can* accomodate both but in doing so it will inevitably affect the drawing ability of both games. Again, given it is the Gold Coast's debut match and it is very desirable for the Titans and the game to hold that match close to their fanbase, the clash with the Broncos/Cowboys "tradition" is a once off situation that need not be an ongoing problem. Only the Broncos and some of their fans seem to want to make a mountain out of this molehill.

Exactly. Only problem is that the Broncos/Cowboys opening round "tradition" is also a Sunday afternoon tradition. But I suppose if they're going to complain that they should get first stab at the fans wallets then they have to accept the move to Friday. The only alternative would be to put the Titans on Monday night after the Sunday afternoon Broncos/Cowboys match. But that then moves the Titans game to pay TV which loses half the benefits of the Titans debut match. So if both games are going to FTA it's pretty much Friday night and Sunday - Broncos are welcome to pick which one they want.

Leigh.
