Last I checked Brisbane Broncos didn't own Suncorp, am I right?

Neither does any other team, but I bet unless it was a stadium like Telstra fans would kick up a sh*t if the same was propesed at their "home" ground by a rival team. Maybe the Sharks can ask to use Okie for a round against the Dragons and get all the takings ect, how about Souths who probably would draw more away than at home stage a few home games away? No team own their own stadium, but I bet no team or their fans would be happy about giving up their home ground for another and losing all the takings and control.

Guys some people missed my point of a few pages ago.

The Cowboys are no longer flavour of the month with SE fans anymore, after last season they have all jumped off the bandwagon. All those bandwaggoners have jumped on the Tits now.

I think with or without the Titans game, the Cowboys/Broncos game will get a poorer crowd than other years, because most expect the Cowboys to get towelled up by the Broncos.

As I said, watch for the Broncos to drop their "Tradition" of playing the Cowboys like a hot potato after this season when the Cowboys finish out of the eight again.

(PS The Cowboys vs Broncos has been a Round 1 fixture for longer than 03 its just that they were mainly played in Townsville not Brisbane, and other than NQers the rest of league couldn't give a sh*t)

Don't forget the Broncos are defending premiers and will pull a fair few bandwagon fans just like any premier does the following year.

Champ, the difference is that Suncorp is an all-purpose, marquee stadium much like Telstra. If it was back in the Lang Park days with reduced capacity you might have a point but Suncorp is the major stadium in QLD right now, simple as that. Only ANZ I believe has a greater capacity.

No we didn't miss your point. But as I pointed out to you the original reason for playing the Cowboys first up was to hold the Broncos home match before poor Cowboys results made the game unattractive for crowds later in the year. With the Cowboys going well that consideration became less important and they could have easily played the match much later and still drawn a bumper crowd. But, if the Cowboys continue to slide, then the original reason will again become a primary consideration. That'd be even more reason to continue holding the match at the start of the year and get the best crowd they can out of it. So, far from the Broncos dropping it like a hot potato, the likely result is the exact opposite. An unsuccessful Cowboys will keep the match where it is while a good performing side would give cause to consider pushing it back to feature as a show case match later in the year.

Yep I had that one coming, IMO they would have to be the most selfish club in the entire universe (slight over statement) seriously, they have had it too good for too long. How many other clubs had an agreement with News Ltd that they be the only club in an area the size of SE QLD for a number of years (not sure how many). I hope the titans give it to them royally at every opportunity.

The other big question is I guess....

Have the Titans earnt the right to open the season in their very first game? Lets face it, they will draw a crowd no matter what day they play round 1, make it sunday.

There is also a real risk that the Titans will get touched up in their first game. Do we want another friday night blow out in round 1?

I'm not sure about that. I agree the Cowboys are sliding, I'm just not sure the average punter has realised that yet and thus, a Round 1 fixture at Lang Park would still pack them in.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Broncos lapdog. Even back when they were my team from their inception until about '94 when my support wavered because of their arrogance (not that I felt they were any worse than what we'd copped from the NSWRL dominated ARL for so long, but I don't condone arrogance justifed or otherwise), I would always stand up and bag them if I felt they warranted it and the situation remains unchanged today.

In particular, their 5(?) year exclusivity clause was a blight on the game, though smart business by them. I acknowledge their business acumen, but damn their soulless corporate carcass.

I just don't see that they've done anything wrong in either the WCC saga or this Round 1 episode.

Wow!

Are you sick or something?

Youre making sense for once, though how anyone can change teams is beyond me.

Maybe this was mentioned before earlier ( i dont have time to flick back through), but if the Tits are so concerned about drawing a huge crowd, why dont they shift theyre game to ANZ? Its closer to the Gold Coast, has a higher capacity than Suncorp (nearly 60000 i think, correct me), and they wont be treading on the Broncos feet. Fair enough its a crap ground to watch footy at (i remember sitting in the 2nd row and being about 40 metres away from the sideline) but hey, the Broncos put up with it for years... Searle is a greedy dog, all he wants is to piss the broncos off to try and steal a share of Brisbane's (gullible, bandwagoning) fans.

Generally speaking being a Broncos supporter I don't have a problem with Titan's playing matches at Suncorp Stadium but in saying that is it the best move to play it in the first round with a potential conflict between what is turning into a regular derby of sorts between the Broncos and Cowboys? Potentially your only hurting crowd attendances for both games so I just question the thinking behind such a move if it is made. And what does winning the competition got to do with this?

Isn't it kind of dumb planning to have both SEQ teams playing in the same market on the same weekend. Fair enough the Titans want to introduce the brand at home in the 1st round & the Broncos would like to defend the premiership at home as well. But wouldn't both matches end up kind of cannibalising each other crowd and media-attention wise?

Wouldn't it be better if one of the teans played away that round?

JF :?

PS:- Why not introduce a dual match ticket so that people can come in from the country etc & make a weekend of it? Or would the Broncos squawk too much at that as well?

That is why the Titans should be applauded. As they are getting stuck into their region opponents rather that pussy-footing around like the Crushers did back in 1995. They are being aggressive about it & are not stupid in realising that they can 'convert' a great deal of the Broncos huge non-regular supporters, especially those from the Brisbane rugby league heartland southern suburbs (which would be more or less the same distance from Suncorp to the Coast anyway).

It is high time somebody took on the Broncos in SEQ. I'm sure a lot of rugby league loving Brisbane people will go and have a look at the Titans to see if they feel 'right'. Good luck to them, I say!

I'm a rugby league loving Brisbane person who doesn't like the Titans - but hell if they are going to get rid of a lot of our more fairweather types and create even MORE hype and passion around our great game up here, then AWESOME!

Bring it on. I can't wait for local derbies and heated rivalry. It's about frigging time, and will continue the bell of death for the Lions.

F*** me - this is way too long to read!

Reading Yakstorm's position that two games in round 1 would drop the crowd I couldn't help but disagree. There will be more people willing to come in for a big weekend in Brissie and to see two top games.

Of course it is and everyone, the clubs included, pretty much agrees it should generally be avoided in the future. But on this occassion both sides have valid reasons to want to play at Suncorp that weekend. The Broncos want to continue building an opening match tradition against the Cowboys while the Titans want to allow as many of their fans as possible to see their debut match. Neither side really wants to give up their position and both seem satisfied to live with whatever negative effects pushing ahead will have on their respective matches. As I've said numerous times in this thread, it's just one weekend out of 25 in the first of many seasons to come. It doesn't warrant all the huff and puff we're wasting on it.

It's not wrong to ask, but I did think it was wrong to request it be played at Suncorp and they get it as a home game, get all the takings and complete control over the game.
So you suggest that it be a St George home game? How can a Titans v Dragons be a Broncos home game?????

Belmore Sports Ground was home to Parramatta for 3 seasons. Canterbury had no problem with it- except whinging about having to use the visitors change rooms for one game per year.

Parramatta Stadium was Canterbury's home ground in 1995. Likewise, Parra had no problem.

Nor did the Roosters have a problem sharing the SFS with Saints and Souths for all those years.

Only Brisbane could whinge at that!

BTW, Lang Park was also home to the Crushers. That was after Brisbane shafted Lang Park to moved to ANZ.
