Hang on, we did have someone outstanding to run it... Dave Smith.....but because he took away the power from the usual suspects they ganged up to run him out of town.

From the interviews Greenberg did yesterday the number one issue is getting the governance of clubs upto scratch......well guess what Dave Smith has been doing for the last couple of years.....but because he didn't know the Aussie captain when he started and wouldn't bow down to News Ltd they lynched him.

No surprise the News Ltd journos all clapped at the press conference yesterday and Greenberg mentioned the Australian mens and womans captains with the News journos.

I had faith when Smith ran the game because he was in charge now I'm worried News will bend us over again.

Why would we attract anyone competent when we were only offering $1m salary?

That's 50% less than Smith was on and our TV rvenue will nearly double from the end of next year.

We should have been offering $3m a year and then we would have seen who would have taken the job.

Unfortunately Smith being sacked and Grant almost immediately rolling over to sign the TV deal with Fox was the portence for this appointment.

Unfort my friends we might have an independent commission but the clubs are well and truly back in charge.

Until we have a Chairman and Commission willing to appoint a CEO who is willing to take on the clubs and weather the media backlash, for the good of the game, we will be at best treading water.

Grant is now damaged goods as far as I am concerned and the quicker he is replaced the better.

Greenberg is just a Kevin Rudd type character who will do and say whatever he is required to, to remain popular with everyone, regardless of how it impacts the job he is suppose to be undertaking in this case running the game.

Sad times.......

Im sure the exact $ offer was tailored to the candidate...

It would be reaonable to offer omeone like Roger Goodell $20m/pa. Toddy is our budget option.

No I don't believe so HITD.

From all reports the money on offer was $1m that is why a lot of people approached turned it down instantly.

Todd is our budget option but an option taken by reactionary Grant again trying to appease the 'too many fat cat salaries' hysteria from the Murdoch and other press.

I saw that many times in the media in the last week criticism of the NRL for spending $100K on the search. For f**** sake!!!!

Put simply, the old boys club were being made accountable and their sense of entitlement taken away by Smith, the game was headed in the right direction and the governance issue was being addressed. The game was profitable and news limited were made to work for a change. What happens next is the old boys throw their toys out of the cot. The solution for them is to oppose everything (cite any QRL, CRL or NSWRL article about funding) and then they punt the guy.....

Now we are back to holding hands with "League" aficionados who think they know how they game should be run despite having decades of stagnant growth and mismanagement under their watch. This game has a habit of gaining momentum, selling that growth to the masses and then when the media who, on the most part, hold the heaviest opinion with the league crowd, start cannibalising the game they support to effect changes which were being glossed over by the management in the first place.

Smith was the guy who pushed all that shit aside and ran the game like a business. Now we have this merkin who will rehash the changes required and call them his own original ideas.

The fact players and figureheads cited smiths inability to recognise player names and use that as an argument proves this game is run by advantageous puppets who would rather benefit their own agenda then to adopt the "whole of game" approach smith tried to bring to all levels of league. He may not have known league but he knew business, finances and effective people management and that's a far cry from the shit we had prior and are likely to continue dealing with now.

Exactly. Does anyone see Greenburg standing up to a Murdoch, a Politis or even a Dessie?
Poor appointment.

OK f*ckwit.

Firstly, they are all factors in ONE reason he is there. He suits the agendas of the powers that be.

Secondly FOUR factors in the one reason does not make "half a dozen" you dullard.

So what people are saying is that John Grant doesn't want what's best for Rugby League?

He basically hates the game and doesn't care about it at all and wants it to fail?

That's why he appointed Greenberg?

I have nothing to suggest it will happen, but my HOPE is that Toddy end up as a President Chester A. Arthur-style "inside man"....

Arthur fell ass backward into the Presidency after a life time of questionable (read: corrupt) dealing. After becoming POTUS, he was more effective than any of his predecessors at rooting out political corruption simply because he knew the systems better than anyone.

My HOPE is that, as an "inside man" and well versed in the dealing of the club land BoyzClubs, he will be able to get shit done and get the sludge moving in a way an outside (DSmith) couldnt.

He might not have be a "Visionary", but if he can work the machine and deal with the egos, maybe the Vision of our Commissioners will be enough...

I probably worded my post a bit wrong.

The shame is that with such a great product, we don't attract proven names in the industry. It hasn't at all been seen as an attractive appointment to those already at CEO level. No one's seemingly held any interest in moving sideways for the privilege or challenge of running our game. Instead, we get a guy who is making his way and may be successful, he may not - we don't know.

Just a reminder about Dave Smith's previous job to running the NRL:

http://www.nrl.com/mr-dave-smith-announced-as-ceo/tabid/10874/newsid/70438/default.aspx

Mr Dave Smith announced as CEO

The Australian Rugby League Commission has announced the Chief Executive Officer of Lloyds International, Mr Dave Smith, as its new Chief Executive.
ARLC Chairman, Mr John Grant, said today that the appointment comes at the end of a deliberate and thorough process in which the only priority has been getting the right person to build on the transformational momentum that has developed across the game:
?This is a person who knows business, who knows how to lead, who loves sport, who is culturally suited to our game and who has a very strong sense of community.
?We?ve spent a lot of time talking with Dave and I can tell you that we are certain he will do a fantastic job for our game.?
Mr Smith currently heads an International Banking Division spanning 10 countries and employing over 1500 staff.
He is a Welshman who, nine years ago, moved with his young family to Australia and ultimately has had responsibility for managing Lloyds International with International assets of AUD $50 billion.
A keen sportsman, his career has included service in the British Army and senior positions with global banking organisations.

From memory they had many experienced and highly credentialed people, however after the bashing Smith took from the media why would these highly qualified people want to run rugby league after the damage done to Smith's reputation. Afterall what right does rugby league have in being run by a high level businessman who can stand toe to toe with the media it needs to be run by a "league man".

So we have what we have with Todd. Time will tell how he will rate in the annals of RL history. What would your top priorities be for him? Clearly expansion is off the agenda so no need to suggest that one ;)

Mine would be:
1. Find out how the game managed to lose $18million last year and reign in spending
2. Set a max non player football spend for clubs, they need an iron fist or we will see the millions the nrl is giving them pssd away. Spend as much as you like on marketing, fan experience, facilities etc but only $X on football related operations. Draw a line in sand for bailing poor performing clubs out.
3. Sort out the crowds, we are in danger of dropping to Aleague standards for some clubs
4. Have the answer ready for the disaster that will be Friday 6pm next year
5. Work with RFL to sort out a better world club challenge and international calendar
6. Improve funding to Nzrl with strategic plan for that country
7. Improve outcomes for growth of the game right across the country

 Very well said.

First, after Smith left, Fox were very keen to get the tv rights negotiations sewn up and furthermore got a Friday 6pm match in the next deal. It was almost as if this was News Ltd's way of trying to screw fans over even more for revenge of taking away MNF. When I first heard the idea proposed by Slothfield, I thought it was just a bad joke and simply couldn't believe it when it did came to fruition.

I've said this before and I'll say this again, Grant et al. agreeing to the rushed deal after Smith left - rather than making Fox sweat it out for another 12 months - will haunt the ARLC in years to come. Additionally, unless the Friday 6pm match is played in New Zealand (and even then, the Warriors can only play 12 matches at home), and excluding Good Friday, any other match in that timeslot played elsewhere is going to be a disaster in terms of crowd attendances. I can see the Crowd Watch thread going into meltdown, let alone a huge outcry from club executives, who were already complaining about MNF and were later on compensated by Gallop a miniscule $50k/home MNF match, which is nothing compared to the amount the home team loses in gate revenue, ground takings etc.

Given how incompetent Greenberg showed himself in the past (e.g. handling and cover-up of the Barba incident), it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he agrees to a Wednesday 2pm match in the following tv rights deal.

If Todd Greenberg doesn't expand the NRL within 3 years, with new franchises in Wellington, Perth and Brisbane/Ipswich, then he deserves to die an excruciatingly painful death.

Greenberg can be the CEO for the next 30 years and we still won't have any new teams. He's in the pockets of the clubs and because most are poorly run they don't want new teams taking up some TV money no matter how big the TV money is.
I hope Greenberg proves me wrong i really do, but under his tenure crowds will continue to drop and the TV money won't increase by what it should. A majority of clubs will continue to be poorly run and they know that Greenberg will bail them out.
Come on Tood prove me wrong.
