Smith was hired to modernise & upskill the games administration & governance, and get the games finances in order, he was always going to make a lot of enemies doing that, that's why it was never going to be a long tenure. The next guy can be the diplomat.

They quickly ruled out promoting anyone from within, saying that all the current executives are to crucial in their current roles to make changes.

They then said they'd take a long search worldwide for the right person to achieve their goals. These are the 2 things that gave me that impression

I wouldn't be surprised .
Most CEOs only stay 3-5 yrs in a job & move on .
If News conceded to pay what Smith & co were asking(maybe with 2 new teams for Fox on a Sat night) it could have been if Smith was ready to move on .
He could have been, & this just sped it up .

As for the nutters who think that after what the ARLC went through to get Out of NEWs LTds grip ,& now are suddenly going to drop to their knees again .

Wasn't that in the context of acting-ceo? Grant said they set the administration up for an internal transition in mind & hoped they would apply.

Grant also made a point of saying the next phase would be a focus on grassroots, which implies a skill set with knowledge of sports administration.

One of the golden rules of business is to keep your friends close and your enemies closer. News Ltd are a pack of bastards but Smiths job was to extract the biggest sum of money possible out of them. Instead he allowed AFL to do that instead. From that moment he was a dead man walking. John Grant should follow him.

Well that keep our enemies approach worked wonders in the past.
Gallop secured a whopping $500 million over 6 years with 1 live game on free to air.
Smith has already secured $925m over 5 years with 4 live games on free to air. We also have 2 years to make fox sweat it out to make a deal. Nrl still have many cards up its sleeves in the negotiations
