Anyone suggesting ex players/coaches get the gig are having a laugh. When people like this are left in charge of running the business side of things you always end up with either complete poverty (Knights) or a freaking circus (Manly). To grow the professionalism of the game we need to get ex players and coaches out of key roles as it is...not bring them into more important ones.

So the News Corp wishlist is;

John Ribot
Graham Annesley
Paul White

What do all these guys have in common?

I rate Paul White but the guy has brain cancer and was appointed by News Corp.

NRL CEO job: V8 Supercars boss James Warbuton tipped as potential Dave Smith successor

DEAN RITCHIE
The Daily Telegraph
October 21, 2015 4:37PM

FORMER Channel TEN chief executive James Warburton has become the latest high-profile administrator linked to rugby league’s vacant CEO position.

Warburton would not comment on Wednesday but is a known rugby league fan who supports the Canterbury Bulldogs.

He is currently CEO of the V8 Supercars, having previously been poached to TEN by then network chairman Lachlan Murdoch from Channel Seven.

There were suggestions Warburton may leave the V8s in May but that speculation was cut down.

Warburton has been with the V8’s for two years, growing the sport considerably, which included securing a $240 million television deal with TEN and Fox Sports.

It is understood Warburton has not made any contact with the NRL but does have significant portfolio which boasts strong involvement in television and the fact he is running a well-known sport. Warburton does have equity in the V8s.

A source close to Warburton said: “He’s not converting the NRL job but he certainly ticks a lot of boxes. He has put the V8s on a secure financial footing. He understands TV and sport. He has brought a lot of money into the V8’s.”

Panthers group general manager Warren Wilson was also being discussed heavily. Wilson, AM, is former TAB Ltd CEO and ex-Sky Channel chief executive.

He is also a former rugby league player who once said: “I just love sport and rugby league.”

Another candidate to emerge was Bernie Gurr, a former Roosters forward who has carved our a successful business career in the US.

Gold Coast Titans chief executive Graham Annesley would be another robust candidate.

Annesley said: “I’m not sure how potential names get thrown into the public arena but I’ve not said or done anything to fuel the speculation.”

NSWRL chief executive David Trodden has emerged as another leading candidate for the vacant NRL role.

Trodden won last year’s NSW Sports Administrator of the Year award, has a strong legal background and a long history in rugby league.

He did not want to be quoted but Trodden was heavily involved in the formation of the ARL Commission.

The same James Warbaton who hid V8 supercars away on Fox for a little more cash.
:crazy::crazy:
Gtfo this guy is not the man for the job.

why should that count against him? The NRL have a FTA deal already done and is a sport that will always be on FTA, V8's don't have the same luxury.

I think he has done a pretty good job with V8's and would be a good choice.

We cannot appoint a News lackey.

Annesley is as weak as piss. Would be a horrible choice. I pity the Titans.

What about Barry O'Farrell for the NRL gig?

by Will Glasgow

Right. He resigned in a hurry on Tuesday and already half the country has been touted as a possible replacement for outgoing NRL boss Dave Smith.

There are the internal candidates: NRL head of football Todd Greenberg (probably the favourite) and head of strategy Shane Richardson (not impossible).

There are the been-there-before candidates: Gold Coast Titans CEO Graham Annesley (maybe) and former AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou (no way).

And the wildcards: Nine boss David Gyngell, James Packer-lieutenant Mark Arbib and Jeffrey Buckets- Katut-Browne.

But after all the speculation, and with half his old Premier's office waiting with arms wide open, no one has mentioned Barry O'Farrell. We don't care if BOF says it will never happen. Let's add him to the list.

I think James Warburton is a good call. Knew him when he ran the media department at McCann-Erickson about 15 years ago. At the time, I thought he was a likeable, smart merkin that would go places. He would've negotiated media deals with Fox and News on a regular basis plus, his staff loved working for him so he has leadership qualities too. Definitely knows how TV and print media works but also the emerging media platforms as well. Well connected too.

Gyngell is another worth considering. Well connected, working for Packer wouldn't have been easy so he's thick skinned. He's always done well for Channel Nein so would be interesting to see how he'd perform negotiating from the other side.

Whoever the replacement is I think they need

*Hard skills in commerce, economics or both;
*A good understanding of the media (either as a practitioner or having worked as a spokesperson);
*To be well connected;
*Under 60;
*A strong communicator both internally and externally (they need a presence);
*A demonstrated ability to push back against the powerful when necessary.

I actually think it's a benefit if they come from outside league too (no baggage). To be honest the first name that popped into my head was Glenn Stevens (RBA governor) but I'm not sure how others would view that. Certainly satisfies the criteria above.

I disagree. It needs to be someone from a rugby league background or we will finish up being a pale imitation of rugby yawnion.

I see Warburton gets a lot of hate from v8 supercar fans (who rival nrl and afl fans for passion), but he can handle the pressure. He is not afraid to make unpopular decisions for the benefit of his sport. Going to foxtel and getting a decent deal was good work considering none of the free to air stations wanted to broadcast the whole v8s season, and introducing new manufacturers (and engines v6, .four cylinder coming in the future) was needed as ford and holden are really cutting back in australia and v8s don't sell in dealerships like they used to.

Weather or not we have a fta deal or not the fact that he has hid V8's away on Fox for short term gain says hes not our guy.

Ratings for V8's Super cars has dropped dramatically ever since.

This guy does not have the vision needed for our game.
