Todd Lowrie part of Eels revival

MANY footballers would consider a Premier League grand final win and a NSW Residents jersey in the past two seasons as career highlights. But for Parramatta toiler Todd Lowrie, they were consolation prizes.
The former Knights back-rower and Scone junior followed coach Michael Hagan to the Eels at the end of 2006, intent on developing his game and establishing himself as an NRL regular after 57 appearances in five seasons for Newcastle.
But Lowrie played just two of a possible 27 NRL games in 2007 after suffering a knee injury early in the season, then by the time he returned the Eels were charging towards the top four and he had to be satisfied with a Premier League title with the reserves.
"If you're going to play there, you want to be successful, so that worked out good," he said.
Lowrie increased his number of appearances to 14 last year, mostly in the second half of the season, which meant he was eligible for NSW Residents selection. He played in their 24-16 victory over their Queensland counterparts in the curtain-raiser to Origin II at Suncorp Stadium.
"I qualified for Residents by one game, we had a good win there, then I might have had one more reserve-grade game just after that and played first grade the rest of the year," Lowrie said.
In the final year of his three-year contract at Parramatta, Lowrie missed their first and fourth games this season and came off the bench in their second and third, but has been a regular starter in the back row since then.
"It's been good, finally," he said.
"When I was there [in Newcastle], I never thought I'd have to leave and I never wanted to leave, but the way it turned out, I did, and I don't hold any grudges whatsoever.
"I wish I had have played more first grade in the last two years and established myself a bit more, but the change in environment and that sort of stuff is not necessarily a bad thing. It opens your eyes a little bit to another part of the world.
"It sounds a bit silly I suppose, but I grew up a little bit more by leaving, and had to take things a bit more seriously."
