Sheens: We're improving

03/09/2009 1:36 PM
Steve Orme

Despite failing to make the NRL finals for a fourth straight year, Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens has declared 2009 a significant step forward for the joint-venture club.
The Tigers will seal ninth spot with a win over competition leaders the Bulldogs at the SFS on Friday night, but could plummet as low as 12th position with a loss.
It's been slim pickings for Sheens' men who have not finished higher than ninth since winning it all in 2005, but the veteran coach is adamant they are a team on the rise.

"It's a disappointment but at the end of the day there's lots of reasons for that but no excuses," Sheens said of his side's failure to qualify for the post-season.
"I'm not here to talk about the last four seasons, I mean there are plenty of sides that were in the eight last year who are running second last this year and a lot further behind us."
"Our consistency has been there for the last four years, we haven't turned it up, we've played some good football.
While reluctant to make excuses, Sheens pointed to the club's heavy injury toll.
"We have had some issues and even losing people out of the last three weeks - key people for the rest of the season - hasn't helped our case," he said.
"I don't think too many sides could lose one of their starting front rows, two wingers and a full-back, all in the space of two weeks and have it not affect their side."
"Again they're just reasons, we're not whinging and our attitude is to come out this week and with what I've got we're going to play and do our best to win the game of footy."
"So I think again, this season in isolation to the last three has been a much stronger season and, with our kids (Toyota Cup team) in the top four as well we've got a lot to look forward to in the next season."
Although still coming to terms with another campaign without finals footy, Tigers captain Robbie Farah echoed his coach's sentiments.
"Even though this season hasn't gone the way we would have liked I'm really optimistic about next year," he said.
"If you'd asked me that the last few years I think not making the semis was really disappointing but this year I can see the progress that we've made."
"And next year I'm pretty confident that we're going to be a different footy team. I know we keep saying that, 'next year, next year,' but I can really see a change in the right direction and already I can't wait for next year."

Improving....

We are perennial ninth place finishers, and wont even get that position unless we pull off a huge upset tonight...

Buy yourself a clue you merkin!

Any chance Humphreys is going to have the backbone to get rid of this deluded idiot??

Computer says 'no"....

You poor fans. You have had to put up with "improving" in 2006/7/8/9.
Sheens is a perennial mediocre man

It's like deja vu all over again
He stumbles across a winning combo after persisting with one that didn't work for 3 yrs, then breaks it up when a fullback gets injured

Shines will have the players pumped tonight and I hope he impresses on them that this could be the 2nd season since 1996 that the great man has a achieved a 50% win rate

I do hope the powers that be see fit to nominate the great man for another coach of the year award ... just as they did in 2007 when the great man decided to teach Ben Jeffrey a lesson

I wonder who will be in for the great man's wrath with an 80 minute stint splintering his arse whilst the great man proves he truly is the Fuhrer.

Sheens, you're a ku9t

Whingers! Tigers complaining about 4 years in a row of missing the 8. How about Penrith? if we lose to Knights on Sunday that will be 5 years of no finals in a row. Souths have only made the 8 once since 1990. There are worse off clubs.

People from the Balmain side of the merger have seen their side make it in 2005, and the last time before that was 1990. What makes it worse is we've won 10 games or more from 2006-2009 and missed the finals every year, yet we are consistently not good enough.

That maybe so, but Penrith is a crap club and South have been nothing short of a f**king waste of time for near on 2 decades now.

There's a substantial difference

When you think about it, over the past 4 seasons we still had Collis, Marshall, Farah, Gibbs, Heighington, Halatau, McDonnell and Payten who were all members of the 2005 premiership side (ie - over half you're run-on side).

This year we were without Fulton, Harrison and Hodgson who were also in the 2005 squad.

We've managed to retain most of those players.

Improving from Premiers to perennial 10th placers is more backwards than you are all realising.

Having kept the side mostly intact, we should have featured in 4 staright finals series as a bare minimum since the premiership.

Improving.....

how many years did it take for penrith to change there coach after not making the finals iam guessing 2 may be 3 matt elliot was lucky to keep his job for this year and souths theres a constant rotation of coaching staff jason taylor is under pressure from the media, but nut teflon tim no kpi's for him no one to answer too he runs the show would have been a great politian. At most other clubs if you dont perform you get shown the door NOT AT THE WEST TIGERS

Yeah we suck but atleast we have 12 wins from the last 16 against the Tigers head to head, you have a hard time beating us so I'm hardly worried about Tiger fans calling us crap. Both our clubs are ordinary results wise, but I actually quite like the Tigers so I'm not here to rub it in. Our achievements have been very similar this decade, 1 premiership and little else, although Penrith has made the finals a couple more times.

You owe alot to Penrith, if it weren't for Penrith veteran Tim Sheens you wouldn't have won that comp in '05 and 1991 GF hero Simmons continues to do a sterling job with your defence, just like he did with ours when he 'coached' us.

The problem with buying from cut out bins is that the goods have a very short time before they become out of date.

The other issue is that they are cheap because of faults.

He's a waste of money, but he's a better buy than David Simmons lol

Simmons should be in the Windsor Wolves but knowing Elliot he could become a regular. Daniela could spend some time in the centres under Sheens.
