Too many Sydney teams

Yes, there are too many teams in Sydney but theres no easy way to reduce teams without loosing fans, in a perfect world Sydney would have 4 or 5 and the NRL would have teams in Perth, Wellington, Sunshine coast..etc,etc

Ever since the 80's the NRL (or NSWRL) has been waiting for Sydney teams to die off and in 30 years only the Jets and Bears have perished. im sure a few people in the NRL front office were excited to hear about the sharks financial problems earlier this year...desperately hoping they would relocate.

what is latest news on cronulla anyway, weren't they suppose to fold at the end of this year?
Fold? Where did you hear that load of sh*t?

They're staying in the comp. They've just got the first part of their huge development passed through council.

Once it's finished they'll be one of the strongest clubs in the competition, financially speaking.

Bears didn't die off, they were screwed over. They were told to relocate to survive, so they did, but inclement weather set back the construction of their new stadium at Gosford. Because of this they played most of their home games away, meaning bugger all income for them and then the NRL gave them arse.

Unlucky, unfortunate and unfair.

Sydney is the comp, always has been, always will be. Just remember the coat tails your dragging along behind the next time you suggest kicking out sides.

Westen Suburbs.
Balmain Tigers
North Sydney
Newtown

Melbourne
Brisbane
Gold Coast
North Qld Cowboys
NZ Warriors.
Canberra

I wouldn't be too confident of your 'always will be'.

there was lots of talk about them not lasting the whole season 5 months back as they were in so much debt.

Anyway good for the sharks, i dont want to see any teams fold or kicked out. When the time is right possibly some sydney clubs will relocate away from sydney, but I dont beleive forcing them to relocate will acheive anything.

sharks are doing a few things. from what ive seen theyre definantly more involved in fund raising on a community level from what iv'e seen.

theyve introduced sharks connect, which is pretty much give em your details and then they send ya stuff through email.

also got the "wall of support"

the wall of support is apparently selling well. basically you pay more money to the club and they put your name on a plaque. theyve already sold out 1 wall and are onto the next one. these plaques are cheap to manufacture by the looks and cost at a minimum 150.

its a good and simple idea.

the key to the new irvine leadership strategy is to get more than 11 days of use out of toyota park. there will be a concert in november and the sharks are looking to maximise revenue from an asset that they own.

on the development front the council approved the thing, its juts has to happen i guess now. they are taking their time and making sure they have the right people in place to get it right.

sponsorship front we have signed a back of jersey sponsor. no workd on a replacement from LG yet.

i guess winning the odd game will help there

Thuggdogg, you're noticeably less "thugg" lately.

Run out of West Side Connection and Eazy-E CD's?

I've always been on the serious side.

Its not my fault people kept laughing at me when i poured out my heart and my opinions to the forum.
Laughed at my resume, my junior footy team, not ever having a job etc.

Its that reason why i wont release my music to the forum. Every time you 'lol' i die a lil' inside.

teams will succomb to natural attrition. the cost of running an NRL football club will continue to increase, and although the competition is expecting a decent windfall from the next media rights agreement, football clubs will still be required to 'fund the gap'. Leagues club grants will get smaller in relation to its proportion of funding to the cost of football club operations, and the battle for major sponsorship $$$ has always been tough in a congested market here in Sydney. Clubs will need to continue to push season ticket drives (hence the security of receiving a large chunk of gate takings in advance, rather than living week-to-week on the back of the team's on-field performance) and focus on other major revenue sources the club can control, such as merchandising, website (or is this outsourced to Telstra??) etc.

those who fall behind will either need a 'white knight' to save them, relocate, merge, or drop back to NSW Cup.

the unfortunate thing is that a club in Sydney will not be spared. In contrast, clubs such as the Storm and Broncos will continue (in the forseeable future) to be kept afloat by News Ltd, although they stated on many occassions that they will want to reduce their investment in the comp to one team.

the 16-team national comp structure needs to be maintained. and some comments such increasing the representation in Sydney would be a backward step IMO.

Personally i believe 18 is tha perfect number and 20 isnt too bad.

There are too many superstars out there going to England and others that die in the womb because they never got a chance to shine.

9 games will maintain 2 friday night, the monday games and sat night and sunday structurwes and allow a saturday arvo game to arrive.

In the late 90s the gameplay was considered tha best it had ever been.

I believe tha reason for this is because the comp was stretched to 20 teams then contracted overnight to 14.

Obviously that means 6 teams worth of lesser players got cut, but what i HAVENT heard about was the amount of stars that was created the previous 2 or 3 years because everyone got an opportunity to taste first grade juice and more stars were created.

I'll try and analogy it.

If you get tha top 10 rappers in australia to ryhme off then pick the best 3 you will likely get the best 3 out of that ten.

Bu if you get 100 rappers to rhyme off and freestyle against each other. The top ten PLUS another 90 wannabees, it is VERY LIKELY that tha top 3 rappers chosen on the day wont be the same as the top 3 from the ten. you will get maybe 2 that are the same but the 3rd would be a surprise. He would have deserved it, hes a superstar, but he wouldnt have had tha chance to shine initially and still be a wannabee if the top ten scenario happened.

That is the difference between condensing from 16 to 14 or keeping the teams level as opposed to reducing from 22 to 14.

Feel me?

These threads always come down to supporters of one team wishing that another team would fold or merge.

I've never heard anyone suggest that their own team should go.

Actually, until the Bears prospect of coming back into the League, I could see sense in the Roosters playing half their home games on the Central Coast.

But losing the SFS to league would be insane.

But yeah. you're basically right. No one wants their team to piss off somewhere thats nowhere near where they can see them. Nor do they want to see them merge with their bitterest rivals.

It might be unavoidable for certain teams to relocate before they die, but good luck trying to get anyone to admit theirs should go first.

I wouldnt, Manly are the only NRL side representing the North Shore. If Manly die, the North Shore would be given to Union. Even if the Bears return on the Central Coast, Manly still need to be there. Also, the Parra vs Manly rivalry is something that I never want to lose again.

TBF some may argue that this proves that with less teams there woul be a greater fanbase for the remaining and large crowds such as this would be more common!

Lets be honest how many do you think would be there if it was Conulla v Manly?
