So the new Top 30 rules are here for 2018

Today is D-Day for all clubs to officially announce their Top 29 players

Only 1 extra player can be added to the squad by Jun 30

What that means also is that ALL 21 club selections every week must come that Top 29/30 player pool for the rest of the year

Only way a player could be added is under formal approval by the NRL only IF a club can justify it cannot use a exusting Top 30 player as a replacement

This suttle change will have a interesting impact on 2018

All clubs run into 6-8 injuries during the course of year, so how that effect the makeup of the weekly squads will be interesting

This year there no second tier salary cap

But there is a development squad they can name of 3-6 players. These guys can be considered when the top 30 players cannot perform a role. At that point they will be considered.

Here I was thinking this was going to be a countdown thread.

Much disappointment.

Well, no reason it can't descend into one. What sort of top 30 were you thinking?

The title is "Top 30 Thats it for 2018" so maybe a countdown of "thats it" moments for player's career (at least NRL). Some contenders might be:

This is what this article, from the NRL's website, says about using players from outside the NRL squad -

The increase in roster sizes, from 25 players in previous seasons, coincides with the abolition of the second-tier salary cap and means coaches cannot call on players outside their NRL squads without dispensation from the salary cap auditor.

To receive approval to use a player from the NSW or Queensland state leagues, a club will need to convince the NRL salary cap auditor they do not have anyone available in their top squad capable of playing his position.

The same article says the following about using any of the development players in the NRL -

Each club is also allowed three-to-six players on a development list, who can be paid up to $60,000 each but are not permitted to play in the Telstra Premiership without approval from the salary cap auditor.

This is only likely to be granted if the club does not have any player in their 30-man NRL squad capable of playing a certain position and wants to use one of the rookies.
