Travis Barker is the best drummer at the moment, not only can he do punk drumming but he is mean at rap,hip hop and rnb as well.

The same can be said for Josh Freese...he has played with everybody from Suicidal Tendencies to A Perfect Circle to No Doubt to Infectious Grooves to Bic Runga and Avril Lavinge. He is first and foremost a studio drummer so he'd have every style down pat.

However, Barker's drumming for the Transplants (which I think you are getting at when you talk hip hop/rap/rnb) is amazing. And he played for the Aquabats and filled in for the Vandals (I think) as well so he is just as well travelled as Freese.

Can't restrict it to 6... how about 16?

Bill Bruford (King Crimson, etc)
Daniel Denis (Univers Zero)
Pip Pyle (National Health, etc)
Pierre Moerlin (Gong)
Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
Christian Vander (Magma)
Lenny White (Return to Forever)
Neil Peart (Rush)
Chris Cutler (Henry Cow, etc)
Giulio Capiozzo (Area)
Richard Coughlin (Caravan)
Terry Bozzio (Zappa, etc)
Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention, etc)
André Fisichella (Shylock)
Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine, etc)

I can't cut anyone from that list, and there are many more I feel the need to add, but I'll leave it there...

Also, I haven't heard much of his work, but I'm always told by drummers that the absolute master of the instrument was Buddy Rich.

Will Calhoun - Living Colour. Anyone who has heard the variety in his playing will agree. Funk/Jazz/Metal/Reggae/Electronica/Fusion. He is a GOD

Stewart Copeland - Police. Inspired a lot more players than you could imagine.

Manu Katche - Versatile, solid and like an octopus when it comes to fills.

Vinnie Colauita - As stated by many before

Virgil Donati - No need to add any more.

Ringo Starr - Sometimes the simple things in life are often the best.

Terepai Richmond - DIG and recently, unfortunately, the Shitlams. Still one of the best Aussie drummers going around. His work as the opening act to the Chad Smith(Chillis) session a few years ago was awesome.

4. Vinnie Colaiuta - Regarded as one of the most technically brilliant drummers of all time.
Played some outlandish stuff with Frank Zappa in the late 70s before being fired for trying to get a pay increase.
Check out Zappa's 'Joe's Garage' and Sting's 'Ten Summoner's Tales'

Seconded (or thirded as the case may be).

I saw Vinnie at the Basement a few years back although missed him with Sting.

Brilliant, by far the best.

I also love Carter Beauford from DMB
