Vlad should get his first run in the Cup game against Villa, he has his work permit now.

I think Paulinho doesn't get enough raps, he's been our best or near enough in about 3 games so far this season.

As far as January goes, hell yeah we need a left back and we need to ditch Naughton.

Good summary boxhead, can't argue with any of it, pretty confident well need to bring in a LB in January other then that challenging for the league isn't beyond us, just depends on how much we want to challenge in the other comps. Hopefully we won't take the league cup too seriously

Agreed, us and Arsenal are proving that we can match the top teams pound for pound in the league, which is great to see from a North London perspective. The only issue is that both these teams tend to have good spells for half or part of a season, then drop off towards the middle or back end. We shall wait and see there I guess.

Agreed on January, methinks Coentrao will be the first player we go for. Madrid owe us a favour after giving Ozil away to Arsenal after all  If we don't end up with a left back, I'll be pretty miffed that we didn't keep Assou-Ekotto; he had his downs, sure, but he's a lot better than Rose and Naughton overall.

To be fair though, Naughton made me pray Rose is our first-team left back  Rose hasn't been half bad to be honest, but he was responsible for Arsenal's goal.

I also agree on Paulinho, I remember reading on the biggest ManU forum about him and one of them said "oh but he's a sh*t passer" and a bunch of them replied with stats that showed he (at the time) was either the top or in the top five for successful passes in the league.

It really highlights how much we have improved overall. We have so many players capable of making that important tackle or scoring that important goal, as opposed to mostly relying on Vertonghen and Bale last season. And heck, Capoue is injured, Sandro and Kaboul are fighting for fitness, etc. Lots of improvement in this very young team.

if we dont get Contraeo we'll get some one else, there is plenty out there

and our spending spree isn't over yet we just ran out of time, we are currently working on a marquee player that will cost us more than Goons paid for Ozil, from what I am hearing, if his team is out of UCL by January then he will join us

Good to hear about the left back situation. The good thing is that Walker can be a pretty good fullback on his day, he just needs to get back to his 11/12 form and cut out the brain farts.

Hmm, interesting. Is this something JJ has been talking about? I recall this talk on deadline day, many thought it was Hulk but methinks it is someone else, given we have Lamela, Townsend, Lennon and Chadli for wingers. It can't be a striker as we already spent mega-bucks on Soldado. Hard to see us signing a midfielder either given how strong we are there, particularly with Eriksen I can't see it being an attacking midfielder. We are strong in the centre with Dembele, Paulinho, Sandro and Capoue.

All I could really see is a winger to play on the opposite side of Lamela, replacing Lennon, leaving Townsend and Chadli as capable back-ups. Maybe, maybe an attacking midfielder. Doesn't leave much room does it? Any ideas who it is?

This is tough actually. EDIT: Oh I get it, it wasn't so much 50 million his cost, but what we are willing to pay. That helps.

I wonder how much Baines would cost us? It would be worth it.

Our formation seems to emphasize the LB. The LB consistently has tonnes of space, if we could grab one that knows how to pick the final ball we would be set.

I think Coentrao would be a lot cheaper, though.

I've done a bit of research and come to the conclusion that it surely has to be a winger to play on the opposite side of Lamela. The reason is that Willian wasn't going to be bought as our Bale replacement, it seems like the front four AVB wanted from the start was Willian/Eriksen/Lamela/Soldado.

It narrows it down a lot. The most popular guess made so far seems to be Marco Reus, but IMO that seems a bit of a stretch. He does seem the perfect fit with all the ITK though, plus his age fits in almost perfectly with most of our signings, but I really can't see BvB being out of the UCL by January.

dunno mate, its hard to get info cuz of what happened with Wilian, there has been no rumours linking him to Spurs and all I can say is that its not Mata, Suarez, Drexler or anyone over 24

so its been kept pretty quiet

we are also looking at another striker El Shaarawy as he is not getting any game time at Milan and/or getting Pato back from Brazil

Yeah I think if it is isn't a striker it has to be Reus. If we pull that off, that would just be insane. Hell, Lamela and Eriksen were insane enough as it is! Not to even mention Soldado!

Hmm. El Shaarawy is supposed to be one of the top young talents in Europe, right? Dunno much about him but that is what I hear. And on Pato, do you mean he is an option as well, or did you mean for Milan?

Pato was injured in his last season so his contract ran down, couldn't pass a medical so went back home

he is still only 24 or so and I like him as he was very good for Milan and we are trying to bring him in in January

Reus name comes up alot, could be him but who knows with transfer windows, anything or nothing can happen

El Shaarawhy is a very good player and too good not to get more game time as Milan have alot of striking options and they just bought Kaka, he'll cost €30 plus but I dont think he is the marquee player but we have spoken to him recently thanks to Baldini

Box head just saw ur post in the Arsenal thread, piss take surely?

Sorry mate, but my heritage demands I support both :) I'm under no such obligation for the other North London clubs though! And don't worry, I always cheer for Spurs in the NLD ;-)

If we can get Pato at a decent price, say sub 25 million, he would be a steal and would really complement Soldado. Those two would be an awesome striker pairing to switch between or even play together if AVB feels like experimenting a bit.

Reus seems the most logical player, he really fits the bill as a massive marquee player that could cost close to 50 million, the club would want to keep him secret, and BvB are in the UCL. Only problem is I can't see them dropping out that early at all.

Wow, interesting. So we are trying to get Pato, El Shaarawy, a left back and a marquee player? Surely this can't all happen in January or even in the next mid-year transfer window, not after the window we just had? I was under the impression that Bale funded the deals we made now, and that we wouldn't be spending too much more? Jeez, if we are actually going out for those kinds of players, and maybe Reus, we've got massive, massive ambition.

Boxy, I dont think we will get both strikers, I would think 1 of those 2 but its early days and Milan dont want to sell but Pato does want to play in the EPL.

And regarding that goal, rather skilful move in the end, nice through ball from Holtby, nice assist with the outside of the left foot from Lamela and a nice back heel from Paulinho

Yeah I didn't think it would be both. Still, if we got even one of a quality left back, Pato/El Shaarawy and Reus/marquee player, I would be over the moon. If we managed to get two or even all three, I would dance until my legs dropped from under me.

May not be Reus as the player has said if his team is still in UCL contention the move may not happen, but they dont expect to get past the group stage. Sort of counts out Reus.

No idea who it is, Drexler is the only one that fills that description and price but he has been ruled out.

We'll have to wait and see I guess.

I think if anything it adds more weight to it being Reus, the rumour was started a while ago and BvB probably still expect to get past the group stage, or if not expect then at least they know they should be able to do it. In that sense, considering the group stage ends in December, I think it adds up to being a team that isn't guaranteed to go far, i.e. Real Madrid and Barcelona. It has to be a team that will struggle to get past the group stage.

The Bale situation, or post mortem is also an interesting story.

We never wanted to sell him and wanted him to stay for another season so Levy and the board decided to put the €100 million valuation on him hoping that it would scare RM off. They made their enquiry and once we made our stance clear we never heard from them for ages, then with 7 days to go they came up with the necessary cash and guarantees to meet our valuation. After a quick board meeting to was decided to accept their offer.

At this time we were already finalising our deals with Lamela, Eriksen and Chiriches. This gave us no time to spend Bale's money which is why we ran out of time. This is why we can expect to spend a bit more in either January or next summers TW.
