Brothers hit by injuries
BROTHERS' outside flyers Daniel Abdul-Rahman and Shaun Ashwell and hard-running prop Robert Pozzebon underwent fitness tests last night as coach Scott Saddler looked to get his strongest side on the paddock for tomorrow's Townsville and Districts Rugby League knockout semi-final clash against Charters Towers.
Both teams qualified for the playoffs in dramatic but vastly different fashion last weekend.
The Brethren did it the tough way, pounding minor premiers Centrals into submission with a rousing 46-14 win, while a nervous group of Miners had to wait for Herbert River to beat University before their finals spot was secured.
Yesterday, Saddler said the trio would be given every opportunity to make themselves available for the match, with Abdul-Rahman (hamstring) and Ashwell (sternum) looking to come back after time on the sidelines. Pozzebon (knee) injured himself in the Centrals match, where he was close to best-on-ground.
Saddler said the team took plenty out of last week's performance, where close to mistake-free attack was well supported by relentless defence.
"That game was real heart-on-your-sleeve type stuff," he said.
"The team is actually a lot closer and have bonded a little better than in the past and as a result, things become easier."
Saddler's opposite in Jeff Burton was also battling what he called "a few niggles" to several of his players, with second-rower Barrett Wherry to make a return to the paddock.
He said last weekend's bye was helpful in terms of recuperation time for a bruised and battered squad, but still didn't quell the anxiety of not knowing if their Subway Premiership chances were still alive.
"We definitely needed the week off, it was just a bit unfortunate we had to sit and sweat it out waiting for a result," he said.
Burton said memories of last year's spectacular fade- out -- where the team finished in the top two but were bundled out of the race with losses to Brothers and Centrals -- were not being used as a motivational tool. "No, there are no lingering bad memories," he said.
"Last year, we had some bad luck with injuries going into the finals and to be honest, we're happy to be in fourth spot.
"Sometimes finishing one or two can play on your mind, thinking that there's always next week if you lose the first one. But we know there is no next week and it's totally up to us."
While Burton may not be calling on finals campaigns gone bad as a motivational tool, Burdekin co-coach Mal Barnes certainly is.
The Roosters take on Centrals in the major semi- final, the winner going through to the grand final on September 13.
Barnes -- who was stand-alone coach last year -- recalled the Tigers giving the Roosters a minor semi-final hiding en route to the premiership.
"For sure, those memories stay with you," Barnes said.
"We were a young side then and we got smashed, so this game on Sunday is a big thing for me and the boys."

MIXED EMOTIONS ... Brothers' Chad Buckby and Dennis Conlon celebrate Conlon's try while the Miners' Luke Walker protests.
A RAMPANT Burdekin made defending premiers Centrals look deadset ordinary while Brothers shattered Charters Towers' Subway Premiership dreams in thrilling fashion in front of a big rugby league-mad crowd at the sports reserve yesterday.
An 80th-minute try to bullocking Brothers second-rower Dennis Conlon broke a 30-all deadlock in the knockout semi-final, condemning the Miners to yet another season of heartache.
In a dramatic last eight minutes, both sides missed potential match-winning field goal attempts, while Conlon's try was widely decried by Miners' supporters as a double movement.
The try was awarded, prompting wild celebrations from a Brothers camp who had to beat Centrals last weekend just to keep their season alive.
"A couple of decisions went against us in that last 15 minutes," was as far as a dejected Miners' coach Jeff Burton was willing to go on the subject.
And from Brothers' Scott Saddler: "It was a real gutsy effort, and these are just a great bunch of blokes.
"We had no blokes left on the interchange bench for the 12 minutes, and our passion just seemed to get us there."
Brothers scored first after nine minutes of scrappy football, with fullback Daniel Abdul-Rahman crossing for the first of his hat-trick, the No. 1 slicing through to the line from dummy half after a big run from prop Robert Pozzebon.
The Towers hit back through an exceptional try, a Chris Lerch offload forwarded on by an unsighted backhand flick from five-eighth Matt Burton with centre Stephen Taylor planting the ball out wide.
Brothers led 18-10 at the break, with the second half going virtually try for try.

In the late game, Centrals were no match for the Roosters whose brutal defence limited the competition's best attacking side to just two tries.
Burdekin, though, appeared lucky not to have fullback Damien Quinn sent off in the opening minutes after would-be tackler Brad Coey-Bradden was felled by what looked like a cocked forearm or elbow.
Burdekin were penalised, a groggy Coey-Bradden left the field -- but reappeared later -- and no further action was taken.
Centrals' injury toll worsened late in the match when reserve forward Simon Leo was stretchered from the field.
The defeat means Centrals will have to qualify for their fourth grand final in five years the hard way, with next weekend's preliminary final against the Brethren shaping up as a cracker.

In the lower grades, Centrals' reserve grade are through to the grand final after downing Brothers, who will play Herbert River after they beat Burdekin.
Charters Towers are straight through in the under-19s after edging out Brothers, who will now play in-form Sharks United following their comprehensive victory over University.

Clash of the titans
RIVAL coaches Scott Saddler and Grant Bell were in full-on finals mode yesterday as Brothers and Centrals geared up for tomorrow's Townsville and Districts Rugby League preliminary final clash at the sports reserve.
Awaiting the winner of the clash of traditional foes will be the TDRL grand final and a pumped-up Burdekin Roosters outfit keen to claim a third title in four seasons.
But for this weekend, Saddler and Bell were worried about one thing -- beating the opposition that was in front of them -- and both were predictably playing their cards close to their chests yesterday.
"At this stage, we'll look to use the same 17 as last week (but) we have a couple of players we're having a look at on Saturday," said Saddler in reference to last weekend's thrilling but bruising semi-final win over Charters Towers.
And this from Bell, whose Tigers were well beaten by the Roosters in the major semi-final: "We've looked at the tape of that game and had a discussion on what we felt we needed to do.
"We didn't match them in a number of areas."
Bell said Centrals started poorly both against Burdekin last weekend and in their final regular-season clash of the year, where a Brothers side playing for TDRL survival belted them 46-14.
"There were aspects we did better last weekend than against Brothers, but both times the opposition had a lot of possession early," Bell said.
Centrals only definite personnel change will be the omission of reserve forward Simon Leo, who injured his back last weekend.
Bell will look to use the "same group of players" in the halves as last weekend. Regular halfback Cameron Joyce started off the bench -- but saw plenty of game time -- while Craig Waia shifted in one position to No. 7, making room for Dave Ackers at five-eighth.
As he did against Charters Towers, Saddler quickly claimed the underdog tag, and has reminded his players to treat tomorrow's match like it was their last of the season.
"Last weekend was the last match, now this one is," he said. "We've played that way for the past four weeks."
Saddler said he would again look to Michael Green to lead the Brothers' charge through the forwards, the bullocking prop described by his coach as a "real leader".
"He just leads, but we have enough nous and experienced people to speak up when needed," Saddler said.

Tomorrow's match kicks off at 3,30pm following two intriguing lower-grade matches.

At noon, the Sharks United under-19s will look to keep their quest for a first premiership alive with a sudden-death match against Brothers, who lost to Charters Towers last weekend.

In reserve grade, the Brethren meet the Herbert River Crushers, who got past University last weekend. Centrals will meet the winner in the grand final.

TIGER TAMED ... Centrals winger Brad Coey-Bradden is smothered by Brothers pair Daniel Abdul- Rahman and Neil Stanley.
Brethren stop at grand Centrals :D :D :D
CENTRALS were back to their ferocious best as Brothers' brave Townsville and Districts Rugby League finals charge came to a sudden halt at the sports reserve yesterday.
Led by inspired performances from veteran winger Brad Coey-Bradden and Foley Shield centre Steven Corbett, the Tigers took the preliminary final 36-22 to set up a 2001 grand final rematch with a Burdekin side looking for their third title in four years.
It was a black day for the Brothers club, who also lost their under-19 and reserve grade matches, with Sharks United and Herbert River going through to Sunday's big one.
"We just suffered from impatience in that last 10 minutes," Brothers coach Scott Saddler said.
"We were 30-22 down and dropped the ball three times inside their 20."
Indeed sloppy ball handling also cost the Brethren in the first half, the side completing just nine of 19 sets, way down on their usual match rate of 72 per cent.
For Centrals coach Grant Bell, the win was well deserved and the veteran mentor reminded some quarters his side doesn't deserve their "soft" tag.
"Plenty have said in the past that Centrals have got nothing, that they're soft and easy, but . . . I thought we were pretty tough today and showed some muscle," he said.
"It was a physical game and both teams had to work hard."
After lack-lustre performances against Burdekin and Brothers in recent weeks, Centrals again started slowly as Brothers halfback Brendan Plath crossed in the fourth minute. The try came one tackle after five-eighth Ashley Astorquia put bullocking centre Adam Peluchetti into a yawning gap, setting up Plath 10 metres out.
But the Tigers hit back in stunning fashion with three tries in 10 minutes, the first to prop Adrian Kerr, followed by two to Coey-Bradden. Both times Coey-Bradden was the grateful recipient of Corbett's sublime service as the Tigers found gold almost every time they mined the left edge.
Both sides crossed once more in the first half, giving Brothers plenty to do in the second.
They got within eight after tries to Shaun Jones and Shaun Ashwell, but brutal Tigers defence and dropped ball knocked any thoughts of a miracle comeback on the head.
Coey-Bradden had the last laugh, taking a full-length diving catch off a Brothers kick in the 78th minute, then crossing for his hat-trick 60 seconds later, as Centrals made what has become an almost annual pilgrimage to the grand final.

Earlier, Sharks United's quest for a first-ever premiership remained alive as the club's under-19 team put the cleaners through minor premiers Brothers 44-20 to set up a meeting with Charters Towers. :D :D :D
Led by 17 points from Trevor Bowman, the Sharks were never headed, with coach Kev Aldridge putting their recent good performances down to an increased emphasis on defence.

In reserve grade, the Crushers held out Brothers 25-22, and will meet Centrals in the grand final. :D :D :D

Tigers pivot in grand return after bad break
0,3600,284288,00.jpg
ON TARGET ... Centrals five-eighth Dave Ackers gets in some kicking practice under the watchful eye of coach Grant Bell.

HAVING fully recovered from a shocking leg injury incurred three games into the 2003 season, Centrals five-eighth Dave Ackers is primed to steer his team to back-to-back premierships at the sports reserve this Sunday.
The Tigers take on Burdekin in a rematch of the 2001 Townsville and Districts Rugby League A-grade grand final.
Ackers, 22, fractured his fibula and tore knee ligaments while playing for the Tigers' reserve grade side, an injury that caused him to reassess his short-term future.
"I am in my last year of teaching at university so it was a pretty busy year for me anyway," Ackers said.
"The thought did cross my mind to give football away for the year, but I don't think I was ever serious about it."
So after three months out and several weeks in the reserves, Ackers found himself back in the A-grade fray, and is among a trio of players that Tigers coach Grant Bell likes to rotate through the halves.
He was one of his team's best in last weekend's preliminary final win over Brothers, with his goalkicking a real standout of his play.
Ackers, who was part of Centrals' 1999 and 2002 premiership-winning sides, said he would like to leave Townsville with another Tigers title, revealing plans to move to Mackay with partner Deanna Smith next year.
