Quite possibly the smartest thing they could do.... allows some of these kids the time to develop, particularly forwards.

good idea, but what happens to the guys just out of sgball now? playing against 22yo? its a catch 22

High hopes for talented Eels

16/12/2008 9:09:00 AM

KEMPSEY’S Albert Kelly will be an integral part of the Parramatta Eels Toyota Cup squad next season.
Kelly and his Eels team mates recently attended a Toyota Cup induction camp ahead of the 2009 season to meet with their peers and listen to advice from past and present on what to expect in the big leagues.
Parramatta’s strong 34-man squad started training in mid November and looks like it will again be a leading contender in next year’s Toyota Cup title race.
The squad includes 15 players with previous Toyota Cup experience and a wealth of talented youngsters stepping up from the SG Ball competition. Head coach Matt Cameron said the team would be fully prepared come the 2009 season kick off.
“You can’t replicate experience so it’s a definite plus to have so many players having already played Toyota Cup. However, last season counts for very little with so many new guys coming in,” he said.
The Eels side will boast three members of this year’s Australian Schoolboys side, including Kelly.
“We’re fortunate to have three Schoolboys in Tim Auremi, Albert Kelly and Daniel Galati in the squad and we’ve recruited strongly if selectively from outside,” Cameron said.
“Ultimately Parramatta’s focus is on developing our juniors and this squad is reflective of that, with the vast majority of the squad coming from junior clubs within our district and through the club’s district representative program.” The Eels finished fifth on the 2008 Toyota Cup ladder and were eventually bundled out in week two of the finals.

Pat O'Hanlon trained with the SG Ball side today and looked very good. He has been named in the Parramatta "Blue" team vs Newcastle Ball trial on 24 January at Cabra.

I think it's good they are blooding him before he plays Toyota Cup.

Young Mackay backrower on the NRL trail

Pat O'Hanlon is poised to make an impact at Parramatta. He is in contention for a Red Rooster Sports Star of the Year Award at Harrup Park on Saturday.

SPORTS AWARDS: The next stage of young Mackay backrower Pat O'Hanlon's road to the NRL starts this weekend.
O'Hanlon will play an under 18 trial for the Parramatta Eels against Manly.
It's his first hit-out for the Eels, who he joined a month ago after a four-match tour of Great Britain and France with the Australian Junior Kangaroos.
O'Hanlon is also in the running this weekend to win $5000 in the Red Rooster Sports Stars awards, to be announced this Saturday night at Harrup Park.
The senior and junior sports stars of the year will each win $5000, and two new entrants into the Daily Mercury Hall of Fame will be announced.
O'Hanlon, who turns 18 in March, said yesterday he also hoped to play an under 20s Toyota Cup trial in Sydney against Cronulla on February 14, the same night that the Sharks will play the Cowboys at the JRL grounds in Mackay.
“Hopefully I'll be starting the season in the under 18s,” he said.
“I'll play about five games with them, then play the rest of the season in the under 20s (Toyota Cup).”
O'Hanlon said he was fully recovered from a broken arm suffered in a Mercury Cup clash against Souths last season, and had enjoyed his month's training with the Eels.
“It's a good training environment, you learn new things and I'm getting fitter,” he said.
“I've met a few of the A graders, they're always there at training.
“I get along well with Nathan Hindmarsh (Eels second rower), I'm getting a few tips from him.”

Didn't see this posted, but Nathan Campbell has decided to take a year off.. His knee is still not right after surgery at the beginning of last year, so he's taking the year off to get it right and I believe he's hoping to play next year.. Though 2 years off is quite a long time

Looked pretty woeful to me, though I only saw the second half.

On that performance I don't think any of them will be pushing for first grade at all during this season.

Is Anthony Mitchell injured? Didn't spot him and the dummy half for most of the game was #19 who wasn't in the program and hence "Unknown" on the try scorers list.

Pat O'Hanlon seemed to be able to handle the step up but needs to think before passing... a couple of his offloads/passes found either the grass or the opposition. Given that it's his first game in NYC (and based on his performance I think he should stay there), I expect that the offloads/passing will improve as the combinations have more time to develop.
