"It's a terrible thing" … Warren Ryan on the death of his son, Matthew.

WHILE Warren Ryan was commentating on Saturday night's NRL game at Brookvale Oval, his 24-year-old son, Matthew, lay in intensive care in St Vincent's Hospital.
It was how the former premiership winning coach felt he could cope best with such a devastating blow.
The next day Matthew died, robbing Ryan and his wife, Pam, of their only child. "I don't want to go into the details," Ryan said yesterday. "He passed away on Sunday, and that's all I want to say.
"It's terrible. We loved him very dearly and we will miss him terribly. It's a terrible thing. I'm so sad, and my wife is so sad about it. There's nothing else we can say. We're just so shattered about it. It's a tragedy."
Although the coroner is expected to say the eastern suburbs real estate agent and former Waverley College student died of heart failure, police are still investigating the matter. A spokesman for St Vincent's Hospital said last night that a 24-year-old man had been admitted on, or about, Wednesday night following an overdose of the party drug, gamma hydroxybutyrate, which is also known as GBH.
The spokesman said a decision was made to switch off the man's life support machine on Sunday when it was established that he had suffered irreparable brain damage.
The Herald understands the man had been at a party at an inner-city flat with friends when he took the drug. It is believed the friends left him without realising he had overdosed.
By the time paramedics came he had suffered heart failure.
After taking Sunday off, Ryan was back at work on Monday. "I've shed that many tears with my wife over it and you just can't go on looking at four walls," he said of his decision to commentate on Monday's NRL game. "You just can't sit there and grieve all the time; you've got to try and do something to distract you. That's all there was to it."
The NRL's chief, David Gallop, said: "It's a tragedy. Our thoughts are with Warren and his wife."

Damn.

Condolences to the Wok and the Ryan family.

Didnt Jack Gibson lose a child through an OD also?

Wow, condolences to the family. :(

That must be absolutely devastating. Not only have they lost a son, but they're going to have to face the media as well. Hopefully the fact that he was the son of a well-known sportsperson will be used to emphasize the dangers of drugs.

Poor kid, he was much too young to die.

Matt was a good friend of my uncle's

A tragic situation, yet another young Australian becomes a statistic

Hopefully this will highlight the inherent dangers of drugs, so at least some good can come of it

Very sad to hear. Silly way to go out, disappointing that people turn to those sorts of things. Can't bear to imagine what the Ryan's are going through.

My regards are with the Ryan clan in this time.

People don't 'turn' to party drugs. He was just unlucky and probably doing what the rest of his mates were doing. They are risks of putting the unknown into your body I guess.

I listened to the WOK on Monday and you wouldn't have known his son had passed away the day before. I suppose we all have our own ways of dealing with things. He is a trooper.

Condolences to the Ryan family. Terrible news.

f**king terrible story. The worst thing is that it happens all to often - if it wasn't Wok's son you wouldn't even hear about it.

It'd be great if a story like this could be used to prevent further tragedies. But sadly, it's not going to.

Thats f**ked.

Really f**ked. Makes you realise how precious life is.

As for the drugs debate, did anyone hear JJJ Hack show yesterday where a report spent 12 hours in the Emergency Ward at a Sydney hospital? Apparently on a saturday night the overwhelming majority of people (something like 80%) admitted to hospital are there because of alcohol related issues.

Exactly. Drugs are common place among the youth of today....it is for that 3-4 hrs of being on a high. Some dont suffer any affects of it, some have their lives ended.
Tragedy for Warren and his family anytime this happens, but around during easter even more so.

Very sad news indeed, and just highlights the consequences of these so called "party-drugs".
Sincerest condolences to Warren Ryan and Pam, and their family.

Awful, awful news. Got a lot of admiration for Warren Ryan and this is just a horrible thing to have happen.
