Liverpool have made a £21m offer for Atletico Madrid's Brazilian striker Diego Costa.
The offer is believed to have triggered the 24-year-old's release clause and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful of completing the deal swiftly.
Costa who joined Atletico from Valladolid in 2010, scored 10 goals in the Primera Liga last season.
The striker made his international debut in March this year and Liverpool are awaiting a response from Atletico.
The Reds have declined to comment on the bid, but sources at Anfield insist the move has no bearing on Luis Suarez's future, which has not changed since Arsenal made a £40,000,001 bid.
The Uruguayan has not submitted a formal transfer request nor has he contacted the Premier League to dispute Liverpool's interpretation of a clause in his contract that the player disputes.
Suarez claims he should be able to talk to Arsenal about a move after their bid, although the Reds disagree.
The move for Costa is something of a surprise, but Atletico head coach Diego Simeone has hinted the striker could be allowed to move on following the arrival of David Villa from Barcelona.
Earlier this week, Rodgers said he would only bring in new signings if they he believed they would improve the squad. "They have to be of the right quality, that's the bottom line," he said
"We've got money to spend on getting that quality in, but if it's not available I won't waste it for the sake of bringing a player in."
Bale talks open: Tottenham & Real Madrid start negotiations over 115m transfer
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has opened dialogue with the Liga giants in the last 24 hours and is expected to meet Florentino Perez on August 6 to discuss a world-record deal
Tottenham have finally opened talks with Real Madrid over the 115 million sale of Gareth Bale, with club officials increasingly convinced the Welshman will leave this summer.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been adamant all summer that the club's prized asset would not be sold under any circumstances.
However, Madrid's concerted campaign has borne fruit in the last couple of days, with their most recent tactic - a warning to Bale and his advisors that it is 'now or never' for him to force a move - prompting the 24-year-old to privately declare in a meeting with Levy that he wants to join the Spanish giants.
That has led the Spurs chairman, whose 'no sale' policy had been fully backed by owner Joe Lewis, to open dialogue with Real in the last 24 hours, with a meeting between Levy and Madrid president Florentino Perez expected to take place on August 6 in Florida.
Even now Levy will only sanction a sale if the deal - cash only - smashes the world record 91m fee Real paid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. Tottenham are keen on Blancos left-back Fabio Coentrao, in particular, while Angel di Maria is also seen by many as a good like-for-like replacement for Bale.
But big-money player exchange deals are a complicated matter, and Levy is keen that he realises the full monetary value for a player who still has three years left on his contract, preferring to keep any follow-up bid for Coentrao and Di Maria separate.
Though it is not a foregone conclusion that the transfer will go ahead - as recently as Monday, Tottenham were insistent no bids had yet even been formalised - Levy and manager Andre Villas-Boas are now making plans for the coming weeks to bolster the squad in Bale's absence.
Roberto Soldado is expected to arrive in a 28m deal from Valencia, joining fellow big-money recruits Paulinho and Nacer Chadli, while Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches is also expected to sign in an 8m deal from Steaua Bucharest.
It looks increasingly likely, though, that they will not be lining up alongside Bale next season, with Real pulling out all the stops to land a 'Galactico' summer signing to rival Barcelona's 57m capture of Neymar.
Despite telling Spurs of his desire to leave the club for Real, Bale has been keen to underline his happiness at the north Londoners and could yet play a part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against a non-league opponent on Thursday.
Further still, should negotiations with Madrid break down, it is still expected that the former Southampton youngster will play a full and committed part under Villas-Boas in the 2013-14 campaign as Spurs aim to claim a place in top four of the Premier League.
But with Levy now willing to talk to Perez and Real desperate to land their number-one target, a world-record deal is now more likely than ever to be completed in the coming weeks.
 Even if he did, how is he going to get past Daniel Levy?
You don't know anything about Spurs
Even with Madrid's gutter tactics attempting to cause unrest with Bale, he is still likely to stay.
Even if Bale genuinely wants to leave, he isn't going to go up in arms about it if we deny him a move. Not only that, but could you imagine the backlash after he signed all those advertising bits with EA Sports and the like that have him in a Spurs shirt for image rights?
 AVB is fearing the worst, when he just publicly came out and told the press he is confident Bale is about to sign a contract extension. You absolute idiot.
You aren't being realistic. You are being a moron.
I don't think its RM's power over the media. They only have Marca to control. Other news outlets are reporting him not playing in the friendly against Monaco. It is also being reported that he is fit enough to play, but he still isn't going to play. The only conclusion that can be derived is that Bale is negotiating with RM so that's why he isn't going to play.
Marca may have triggered other news outlets to report what they said but i don't think RM have huge power over the world media.
Bale hasn't been saying anything to the media so it has been difficult to get proper info about what's going on. Bale is obviously thinking about the Spurs supporters (i.e. Boxhead) and doesn't wan't to tarnish the relationship he has with them.
That is why he hasn't said anything to the media regarding contract negotiations with RM.
On the other hand Bale cannot refuse such a huge offer to play for a big club like RM.
It has been reported that Ronaldo will meet with Man Utd officials to talk about going back to Old Trafford. As a RM supporter i would be heartbroken to see Ronaldo leave but then again it would explain why RM are throwing big money at Bale. Bale could possibly be bought by RM to cover the loss of Ronaldo.
oh you know him personally, do you ?
he's been gagged and not allowed to talk to the media, he's also a very shy bloke and doesn't like attention
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...urges-Gareth-Bale-ask-transfer-Tottenham.htmlGareth Bale's future is in turmoil after it emerged the forward is reluctant to risk his relationship with Tottenham fans by handing in a transfer request.
neither can Levy if his valuation is met
personally I would jump on it as I dont think anyone is worth 100 million (pounds)
As I've said before they both play the same role and he would only go to RM if Ronny boy left
linking to a British media outlet with no quotes form the man himself in an article by Zidane is as far as not backing it up as you can get
Zidane has been a scumbag in all this tapping up and should be charged but obviously works under different rules to everyone else because of who he is
he is under a gag order, end of story
