Issue is for Ivan to still have a job at tigers he needs to be winning. If he is winning his halves must be performing. Anyone see the catch 22?
Also Ivan maybe using the son thing as a bit of insurance on his own job right?

2 yrs is a long time in league. If the tigers go backwards this year Ivan will be under pressure for 2019.

I personally think the whole Cleary thing will come down to how successful we are in the next two years. I reckon we will offer him competitive money and if the Team is in a good place, he’ll want to stay with his mates.

He’s said before he isn’t keen on being coached by his old man.

I agree. If we win a comp or come very close I think Nathan will stay if we offer a reasonable money.

My main concern is that Copper Cronk contract finishes in 2 years same time as Nathans finishes. We all know how the Roosters are able to offer overs for the right player.

I don't know; he could be just as likely to move on if we win a comp - he would have proved himself and be offered huge money.

Too many pieces in play to really predict anything. Griffin just better make use of the time we have with him.

Works out well we can sign Cronk - Gus logic

If Nathan Cleary down the track chooses to follow his dad to the West’s Tigers or some other club good luck to him. If that’s the way he decides to go so be it. We are so well placed in our junior development there will always be someone coming thru ready to make the step up. Our current roster may not be perfect but it it strong with good depth and we have some real great kids who probably won’t even see the top grade at our club. Before we resign Nathan Cleary on a no doubt ridiculous deal given what number 7’s are paid these days let’s hope someone like Josh Mansour can get resigned on a deal for which he has truly earned.

Yeah...

Greg Alexander... to Craig Gower and now Nathan Cleary. Its only around a decade between us developing quality number 7s.

Losing Cleary wouldnt be a big deal at all.

I agree that halfbacks are a rare breed for our club. It has always been the case in the NRL. Everyone is looking and/or hoping for the next Johns. Inevitably it will make it hard to retain halves and in turn harder to poach.

I may be speaking out of turn but I do not think that is what @Kilkenny is suggesting at all.

Highlighting one sentence removes the context of his statement. That being if we lose him, as hard a pill as that would be to swallow, we have put in place ways to ensure talent always filters through.

Most of us are well aware of the need to retain Cleary but if he leaves, we have systems in place that will hopefully net us a replacement.

The importance of Cleary and others in this team is not lost on anyone here.

Players like Cleary and Moylan don't come along very often. A club can't lose players as good as these as regularly as we do and hope to win comps. We have deep issues at Penrith where rep quality players simply don't have full careers here

No club can claim to produce players of that quality in every four or five years. Genius players do not arrive every few years. Canterbury produced Thurston. Who have they delivered since then of the same standard? Ditto the Storm and Slater? But that isn't how we should measure ourselves. We should be measuring ourselves against those clubs who have managed to be competitive year after year. The Storm, the Broncos, Manly, the Roosters.

This club has never been so competitive in the juniors and lower grades. We have been in the finals nearly every year for five years and have won a few premierships and been runner up. If we can continue to do that we will have steady supply of first graders. Every so often a Greg Alexander will appear. I am not convinced that Cleary is as good as Brandy yet, but he is at least a very capable player.

We have made the semi's twice, the team is starting to be made up of mainly juniors. If we can do that regularly, we will win a premiership every so often.

Gus wanted us to be like Bennett's Broncos. A team made of mainly local juniors, make the semis every year and be competitive. The other thing that the Broncos did well was to move the juniors into first grade in managed way so they could actually compete when they arrived. Gus made comments about 'breaking' players by putting them in too soon, or leaving them in too long. He signed journeyman to fill spots so we wouldn't have to do that. I have never seen the Panthers introduce so many players into first grade as they have in the last six years. It started with Ivan and Hook has continued it. What is surprising though, is when they play they are competitive.

If you put any number of smart football people in a room and gave them the facts about the Panthers and said 'what should our strategic plan be?', I would be amazed if it didn't look very similar to what Gus has come up with. Only time will tell if this is sustainable and in five years time whether the production line really is working and it can deliver success.

The idea that a single player leaves and we just trash the whole plan makes no sense to me. You don't build clubs around a single player because when they leave, retire or get injured what do you have left? The Alexander tragedy is a perfect example how something unexpected led to the loss of our best player. If Cleary leaves good luck to him. Hopefully, behind him will be a club steadily producing quality first graders that keep the club competitive for the foreseeable future. If we are lucky, we may see another little genius like Brandy come through, but that would just be icing on the cake.

Maybe, but it really appears that things are changing and a different culture is coming through.
Rep players actually want to come here now!, and not just for the money apparently.
Juniors want to stay.
This wasn’t the way it used to be!

The rep players that have come here have dropped form and stopped playing rep footy. Hopefully Maloney is the start of that trend dying.

I think if we go close next year and the Tigers are bottom 4 I think our offer to extend Cleary's contract will be hard to ignore. He may one day want to play under his dad but he may also want to continue to play with his mates. As far as I can tell he is happy here.
I don't know how he will gel with Maloney but I would rather learn off him and Brandy than Josh Reynolds.

Thats not true..

Tamou and Merrin took the highest offers. Maloney wanted his payday and we had to push Latu out ontop of already having lost Moylan to get him.

A player might stay at a club for less. But they wont accept less to join us or most other teams. The brown paper bag teams are the only exception.

I love Mansour. But as a winger he is more expendable than losing our halfback. We can build around Cleary and he should have ~10 years ahead of him. More possibly.

We cant lose him. Thats the last 7 years of Gus being here wasted.

We would have lost every singled spine player bought and/or developed. The only way to be regularly successful is to keep those players.
