Its not reasonable to assume he wont want to play for the tigers at any point in the future, that's being silly. At 18 Panthers was easily the best place for him, we had the best 20s(completely dominant), all his friends were here and we had no long term halves options. Add to that his dad wasn't coaching elsewhere and he wasn't established as a FGer and its easy to see why he didn't leave a few years ago. In no way shape or form does that mean he wont leave us ever. In two years the tigers could be as good as anyone or Ivan might be coaching the roosters......he has spoken about wanting to play for his dad for years now.

Will Nathan want to play for the Tigers, who really have no chance of making the finals any time soon - No

Will he want to stay and build with his mates he has played with for years - I'd think so.

Will he want the massive money on offer from Penrith - I'd think so,

Will Ivan still be at the tigers in 2 years - Not if they are not winning. History shows that.

Will he want to remain in a squad he has help build to win, who hopefully have played finals in all 4 of his seasons - I'd think so.

Is Ivan doing his best by pushing the father son agenda, to drive Nathans price up - Yes.

If Nath was so dirty on the Panthers when his dad was punted, wouldn't he had gone to ANY of the other clubs that would have signed him up for the 20's and beyond - Yes.
Are these all your biased opinions? Yes.

Its simple though. We need to keep him no matter what. Money talks. He might want to play for his dad. But he sure as hell wont sacrifice a couple hundred thousand a year to do so.

This is where Gus coming out and saying "Ivan was too tired to coach us" is just dumb, what did that comment gain us? A miniscule PR victory? All I can see it doing is making it a tiny bit harder to retain Nathan in a few years. There is no need to kick someone when they are down like that, check your ego and show some class. We did the same thing to Moylan, it went from him not sure about being captain to him wanting out to him having a personality clash with the coach, then he needed counselling to help cope with it all and it was eventually leaked that he has been showing up late and otherwise taking the piss for two years, there is no need to leak and say all that, either release him or don't we don't need to be dirty about it and really burn that bridge.

Money doesn't fix all though. This is the thing you seem to overlook. We have Tigers covered every possible way even money except for his dad. That we can't match

Isn't Griffin’s current contract up the same time as Nathan’s? We could match them for that

I loved Ivan as a coach - until this point..

When your coach says you are done with 4 games still to go, whilst only 3 games out of 7th & 8th, i was pretty stunned that he had given up on the team and i am sure that one comment helped seal his fate.

The look on Taylors face when his coach basically says the season is now a write off is enough for any employer to evaluate the direction of the one leading the team.

Did Gus say more than what was needed, probably, but what happened has happened.

I agree with both sides. Gus went too far to justify and I think Cleary really was feeling the stresses of coaching.

Yeah but that's totally different.

Hows it different???
He also said anyone who thinks we were going to make the top four doesn't know anything about footy. That was before midway when we were really struggling. A team that starts the year as favourites has a coach saying that, that is much worse. If we aren't aiming for the top four every season what are we doing? And less than half a season gone and you are giving up on making the top four? Lol come on, Ivan saying we are done with a few games to go is worse? Think back to that season we were absolutely no chance of making the 8 no matter what the maths said, no f**king chance at all. We just missed the spoon with the last game of the season(had to beat newy in the spoon bowl if you recall) literally no one thought we would make the 8 when Ivan made those comments, we were struggling to get a side on the park ffs.

Clearly trying to take pressure of the players as they weren't performing & he obviously thought expectation had something to do with it.

Non event.

When has he said he wants to be coached my his old man? I’ve only ever heard him say he didn’t. I’ve heard him say that he wants his dad to remain his dad and not his boss.

I know Ivan said he wants to coach him at some point, but I’ve never heard Nathan say it.

We were premiership favs, all by media build up. We were failing and was a way of taking the

He does pretty much what Ivan does... yet its a non event for him and for Ivan its a bad thing

Our coach insulted our entire roster as not being good enough and anyone who thought it was capable of being in the top 4. Suggesting those people don't know footy.

Meanwhile our club was talking up 2017 as being our time... we realeased a f**king promo trying to hype that shit up.

He’s said it in interviews more than once, you can find it on google.

Nooo Marty he is taking the pressure off himself, it was his coaching being questioned not the squad, everyone knew we had a capable squad last year, experts literally looked at our squad and said we are the favourites, people who have achieved everything in the game said that about our squad. When you consider it in that context it gets worse.

“Our squad isn’t good enough to make the top 4” is basically what he said, that’s ridiculous to say he’s just trying to take pressure off his players, he’s telling them they aren’t good enough and using that to justify his own poor performance.

I found this:

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www...ews/ivan-cleary-wants-to-coach-son-nathan/amp

Basically we’re both coming to the opinion that we’d like to play together. It’s just a question of timing really,” Cleary Snr said.

“He’s still got two years to go at the Panthers and I think that’s good for him.

"He’s not in a hurry to decide that, but we both realise that this situation is a pretty unique opportunity.

“I was always conscious of never wanting to put him in a position that compromises him being up front.

“But the further (his career) is going I’m getting more confident it won’t be a problem. But we’re not thinking about it too much right now.

"Probably in 12 months time it will be more relevant.”

Nathan will be able to being talks with rival clubs from November 1, 2018 if he doesn't sign a contract extension with the Panthers.
