I feel the same. I have always thought Leilua would end up as a ball playing prop and do very well in that role. Right now we don't seem to have an adequate replacement for De Belin - if he comes unavailable - so Merin rpeplacing Graham and used as a prop/lock seems to make sense to me.
Leilua under instructions from Flanagan could have been something special. I don't really know why we have to move two steps back before taking one step forward. Leilua is a local junior and is not on a high salary. Our priority should have always been to keep him. Merin should always have been a replacement for Graham or if De Belin not available, a replacement for De Belin.
I had my reservations about Leilua but whatever his best position the fact remains that he was only 23 and on the way up. With Tariq Sims due to turn 30 at the beginning of the 2020 season and the probability of a 30yo Merrin starting in the 13 jersey in place of De Belin, we will have an ageing and injury prone starting pack.
Speaking of being injury prone, I wonder if any of Mary's overseas training courses have given him some common sense in relation to players playing with serious injuries. Sims was quoted this morning, after bilateral groin surgeries, that he was severely restricted in his movement last season but felt he had to play to compensate for the loss of De Belin and other injured players. We ended up with the second worse defensive record. If a bloke is unable to move laterally in RL, surely he is a major liability. Another example of Mary's criminal neglect of younger forwards like Ford and Timms.
