Meanwhile, Lewis has opened the door for the Tri-Nations to be played in Australia next year. He said primary television rights holder, Sky Sports, doesn't mind where the games are held.

"We would be very happy to discuss the possibility of playing the tournament in Australia or elsewhere," Lewis said.

"Our aim was to grow the Tri-Nations and make it a global tournament ... our first aim was for it to have credibility and I think that is pretty close to being in the bag."

With NZ wanting some big internations within its own shores, perhaps it should lead the bid in this?

Thank god each of the teams have been competitive so far.. could have been a disaster.

I hope aussie fans are ready for RL internationals in Oz again.

NZ should host, with Suva and Port Moresby getting 1 game each, whether it's a trial or something to keep the small nations interested.

I would love to see this live.

I can see that I will be spending a lot of time travelling to Melbourne, Brisbane - hell even Townsville and NZ!

It would be so great!

NZ to hold all the nz games against GB in NZ and one against Australia while Australia has the ones against GB and one against NZ. It would be a classic series and it would show people how close the teams are at a great time slot.

The season would need to be cut short or start early so the games are not being played so late into Nov so I don't see it in Australia next year..

I also notice he said

However, he revealed that the tournament was still not guaranteed to make a profit.

Yeah a very good thing about Lewis is he wont go out and say 'This tournament will make a profit even before a ball has been kicked or a seat filled' like some past RL administrators, instead he will let all costs be paid, prize money paid out, and everything else paid for and then will announce if the tournament is a success or not financially.

Good... makes him trustworthy if he stays honest.

i think the tournament would go well in nz

games could be spread around the country with the bigger matches played in the bigger cities

games could be played all over including

auckland, wellington, christchurch, invercargill etc

I guess Lewis is talking about ticket sales too. The success or otherwise of GB could be a big influence on the bottom line.

As for a Down Under Tri-Nations draw, I put a hypothetical one on another thread. Here it is again (with some tweaking).

AU v GB Suncorp
AU v GB SCG
AU v NZ Olympic Park, Melbourne
NZ v AU Erricson Stadium
NZ v GB Hamilton
NZ v GB Wellington

FINAL SFS

----

PNG v AU Townsville
PNG v NZ North Harbour
PNG v GB Gold Coast

(assuming PNG is unrealistic)

Personally, when it becomes successful, I'd like to see the format change to the 1 home and 1 away game style of the union Tri Nations... That would give fans of each team a chance to see them play. You could hold the final in the country of the most successful team.

You've put games in a large stadium in Brisbane but a smaller one in Sydney. Why do you think the crowd in Brissy will be larger than Sydney?

SCG is a horrible place for a game. Wrong size field.. it's a cricket field. bad views, players are millions of miles away etc etc etc ... keep that for the oldies who think about the good old days.

Games in Sydney should be telstra stadium or SFS.

A game involving PNG in Canberra would be good also.

I'd hold the Australia games anywhere except Sydney, and then have the final at Telstra, make it a huge event and hopefully get 80K in there.

There are some great suggestions in this thread. It may even be worth considering holding all games on a home-and-away basis. For example, hold matches in this order:

Aus vs NZ - Newcastle
NZ vs Aus - Albany
Aus vs GB - Townsville/Brisbane
NZ vs GB - Wellington
GB vs Aus - Manchester
GB vs NZ - Leeds

For future 3N tournaments, we could even consider scrapping the final for several of reasons:
a) The Union 3N has run successfully for 10 years without a final to determine the winner - it is decided on points table
b) a final excludes one team - which could be embarassing if the hosts don't make the final (as GB may still miss out this year)

most importantly
c) easier to justify the introduction more games if France are admitted and it expands to a Four Nations series in a couple of years (when Perpignan commences in SL in 2006).

The tournament should be played alternating between northern hemishere and southern hemisphere every single year. League needs this tournament.. every single year. The fans can have it all.. a great domestic comp, state of origin & an elite international tournament.. every single year!

The problem is we are use to our administrators screwing it up. If not, then its boom time for RL!

The final is what makes this tournament better than unions. A final means so much more. Just my opinion. Perhaps with 4 teams each team would only play each other once, then a final.

We definately need a final.

But isnt Unions new SANZAR proposal to News, not only going to include an expanded Super 12 but expanded Tri Nations with a final?

I think possibly because QLD rarely ever get to host international matches, and it will be a chance to prove themselves, and it will sell-out.

Union internationals sell out matches at suncorp all the time and union isn't even the number 1 sport in QLD, Could you imagine if League Tests were played over there?
