Didn’t go to the game had other commitments but caught some of it on the stream.

Seemed to be a solid trial hit out.

Nice to see Brent Naden perform well. I hope he takes it up to the next level in 2020. Great kid and it would be good to see him go to the next level. Given it was only a trial and doing week in week out in the grind of the NRL is entirely different but still it was promising.

In addition to the above the one thing I did notice worth mentioning was the fact Matt Burton has a huge boot on him. A totally different kicking game to either Nathan Cleary or Jerome Laui. Laui and Burton are entirely different players, who offer different strengths and weaknesses. It will be interesting to see who get’s the starting 5/8 job in round 1. I think it is a 50/50 call.

One thing Girds said that I agree with is Burton is the guy out of all our 5/8 options who can make his presence felt immediately. Defensively he should be fine with his vision and physical attributes, his two top level games he has laid on a try with a kick and put Naden away for a line break that lead to a try albeit in a trial, so he can create.

It seems silly as he is by far the least experienced out our options but I really think he will take the least amount of time to find his feet. He can kick long or short, plays direct and has a good running game, he has a good passing game and he counts numbers, if Jerome hadn't been in waiting for years it really wouldn't be a 50/50 call, Burton would be the obvious choice, it is just this sense that Jerome has earned his shot by being patient that has this up in the air still, which is understandable.

Again you pointed out Burton played a trial, and played well, but not for 80mins and it was not against an NRL 1st Grade level side, but agree that Luai has his shot, and its his to lose, hopefully he won't, and i hope he brains it, like his 2018Warriors match, all year long

He cant play more than a trial game until we give him a chance. Luai will need to brain it all year long to keep Burton out.

Watch the start of the game when Burton and luai are on the field together, Luai plays well and sets up Nado for the first try but Burton was clearly running things and looked like the better half, even the commentary said so.

Burton is our most naturally talented half and that isn't meant as an insult there are things I like about Luai and Cleary and I have defended both.

Well then if he played well with Luai, maybe its time for Api to train Nathan to become the next Cameron Smith.
Might be best if we have all three on field

The highlight for me was Nadens inside pass while running at full speed to Burns, in the Hetherington try. That was not a pass he makes, or probably even would have attempted, last season. Plus had a try assist as well. Showed they have worked a lot on what was his biggest weakness as a centre during the off season.

That was a beauty but its suprising how many players cant make that pass these days. I saw a clip of nsw origin team backline move from the early 2000s and the ball went through the hands with everyone moving at pace and every pass was perfect, the skill level of the game has dropped off considerable imo as athletes have got bigger, stronger and faster.

Yeah, younger, fitter, stronger and less skillful now, but big muscles was never the goal back then, cliffy lyons best footballer ever, smoked a packet of winny reds a day, these kids would be shot if coach sees the sheet guys back then would do

Watched him a few times not that long ago playing for a local central coast side, he looked like the least likely player ever but he still had the magic hands. You know he is from tregear originally, coulda been a panthers legend.

Maybe we should let all the players just stop going to the gym, hang out front 7/11s and schmoke ciggis all day till game time, that how i did it, thats how my granpapi did it, and its worked for league so far

All this feed them greens shit is making them all dumb in the head, DWZ couldnt even hold onto the ball, Edwards needed a break, spark up son!

It's good that he is now passing, something he was a little lacking in last year. Now we just have to hope his defence can improve also. Time will tell. If his defence does improve, he will shape up as a good player.

IF he can get that defence to an acceptable level he shapes up as one of our better finds in recent years. He wasn't tested in this area on the weekend but hopefully the improved fitness will help with his decision making.
