France U19 (26) defeat Australia AIS U19 (10) (Monday night, Salon de Provence)

More evidence that France can mix it with the best in the lower age groups and that professionalism is the determinant factor. 10 years of Super XIII would be a huge boost for league in France and on the international stage.

On average, how many gun league juniors get snapped up by cashed up union clubs in France? With a great result against the AIS it does look bright for French RL, hopefully they will stick with the XIII game.

At these levels, a lot of countries have been able to stick with and give Australia a good game, some of them have been able to beat us frequently, maybe it's time we started a youth WC and get them all playing while they're young? Could solve a few problems along the way too huh?

Well it would give the NRL and SL spies (and Union) a chance to see the best youngsters all in one place.

2012 AIR RUGBY LEAGUE PROGRAM
GAME 1 V FRENCH UNDER 19’S
MATCH REPORT
The 2012 AIS Rugby league tour kicked of last night in the very picturesque town of Salon De Provence in the south of France. Unfortunately the Australians did not get the start they hoped for.

Despite a positive start which saw the Australian team open the scoring with a well constructed try to fullback Andrew Heffernan, our boys were not able capitalise on their early success.
A very committed French team, spurred on by a large and very vocal crowd, struck back with a try in the 22nd minute and from that point on were never headed.

At half time the French led 8-4 but after a committed passage of play just after the resumption the AIS struck back and the scores were locked at 10 all after 14 minutes. Unfortunately that recovery was short lived and on the back a healthy share of possession and a very well executed series of play the French took control of the match and put on two further unanswered tries.

Despite being disappointed with the result head coach Brad Drew said “There were plenty of positive things in our performance tonight. We will build on the lessons we take out of tonight as we prepare for our next match in Toulouse on Thursday.”

Michael Barkley was named man of the match for the AIS.

At the 13:35 minute point there is a ridiculous pass thrown by the France half or 5/8.
Coming from a halfback, man he shows some skill.
To look and face left, dummy left, and then turn and throw a cut out, face ball, to the right, and without it being a forward pass! Far out, that is a skill.
That highlights package showed some really good passing skills from both teams.
It really shows the skill set needed to mix it these days with the best.
Even Wales, who got flogged against England and beaten by France in the Autumn Int Series, really showed some set-play skill in attack.
Lets hope the Island nations can show some of the same in the WC.

The other outstanding young French player is Karim Madani, he is playing tonight for France u18's but i notice they are playing him in the front row. i think he is best at lock forward.

The Salford Reds half Theo Fages isn't playing at all, he could be injured.

Fages is likely in pre-season training with Salford, unless they sign someone then he'll probably be their first choice half in the coming season.

The old head coach of the AIS and Schoolboys sides is a good mate of mine and I have often chatted to him about the French juniors and he rates them highly as they were always very competitve against the Aussies. This new Pro-League thats being talked about in France would be fantastic if it becomes viable, it would give these kids an avenue to stay in the game and develop into very good footballers.
