That's awesome news! Myself, I never really wanted to pursue a career in it after I finished the degree, but I always thought Ali had a future in it. Tell her I said hi and congrats.

I did the UNE early acceptance thing too, then got the TER (showing my age) I needed to get into Newie (my first preference) anyways - however my mrs at the time didn't get a good enough TER so off to armydale we went. (she did theatre too, bloody bludgers the lot of you... :p )

I was a townie, and hated it, went back to Newie after 12 months and never want to leave again!

There are no UAI pleasers as such. Trying to play the system by doing the harder subjects will just drive your UAI down. If you have any prereqs for the course, do them, aside from that choose courses you think you will do well in and enjoy.

Devil, mid 80s wont get you a 95 UAI. You'd be lucky to get 90.

There are subjects that tend to more often than not scale you up, as i've just completed my hsc, it seems the trend continued last year.

Extension 1 Mathematics will scale you up, whereas General or Advanced may scale you down.

Advanced English will roughly stay the same, but doing Extension 1 English will not only scale up, it may also scale your Advanced English mark as well.

All science subjects, Physics and Chemistry and Biology tend to scale up as well, mainly Physics and Chemistry.

With Social Sciences, Economics is the only one that will scale you up. Business Studies will scale you down pretty badly if you don't do well. Legal Studies will keep you around the same mark, maybe scale you down a notch or two.

But then keeping in mind i went to one of the top Selective High Schools in Sydney may have helped me... ;-)

Scaling means nothing in the scheme of things. If you are going to do Extension 1 english but do it badly because its not for you, then youve wasted your time. If you do standard english and do it as best as you possibly can, you will come out in front.

Obviously that is true, scaling only comes into effect if you've scored decently, i.e High Band 4 and upwards

But in the bigger picture, in general those are the subjects that scale well. I don't want to paint any false pictures for anyone here. You should try your bloody best in everything and don't rely on scaling and your school.

When I was studying Bachelor of Exercise Science at uni, most people were only doing it to get into Physio. So maybe look at doing Exercise Science/ Bachelor of Science in Human Movements etc for a semester or two.

Ive been looking around at careers that might be good for me and I just want to get the scores they ask for in perspective of what everyone gets. One asks for a 94 and up and im just wondering if thats exceptionally high or what.

It's pretty high, but who is saying you need to get 94 in your HSC? If you get enough to get into a Bachelor of Arts or something fairly flexible, you can transfer across after 12 months. The alternative is that you just come back to Uni and do Open Foundation or some type of bridging course.

In all of these options (except studying really hard and getting 94 in the HSC) you end up still trying to get a UAI, but it's a great deal easier trying to do it at Uni than at school. Your marks always tend to convert better at Uni because they scale your marks a lot more favourably.

when i did my HSC mi did 11 units (only 10 count)

My lowest mark was a 78 for chem, but they counted both my chem units instead of 1 because it was deemed 78 in chem was higher than 85 in legal studies.

If you want good scaling do 4 unit maths, physics, chem, nd advanced english(if you can handle it)

As Dilly said, it really is hard to predict. When I did my HSC I did Ancient History, Drama, Information Technology, Information Processes, and 4 Unit Advanced English and still ended up getting a UAI above ninety. They say it's impossible to achieve without a science and a maths, but that's not true.

LOL I am way too old to contribute meaningfully to this discussion!

I have to disagree with mac - I was fine with doing 13 units :D No free periods to socialise in the library was a downside though.

I did 12, my 12th unit was history extention but all the classes were after school and in any case I only attended like 4 classes all year, still came 1st in the class out of about 7 kids but I didn't study for and I didn't write anything down in the HSC exam.

I got 98.4 UAI, but I did those subjects where the scaling helped me.

Economics
Legal Studies
Business Studies
Standard English (did not count)
Geography
Ancient History

Basically if you get 85+ in your actual marks you should get 95+ UAI. Well that is what I went on. I only got 2 90's in my marks but the rest were 87-89.

2 units of english are compulsary and are counted in the final UAI

Business studies also scales down, unless you got a Band 6

hospo

lol i did sh!t subjects for scaling
but hey, i got into uni before i did the HSC, so it didn't really matter

that is untrue, because the subjects you do are scaled... take me for example i got averages of 80-85 in all subjects except for one (but that didn't matter as i did 12 units and they only count 10) and my UAI was crap. I had a friend who got above 90 in three subjects and mid 80's in everything else.... she got a UAI around 70..... it all depends on the subjects that you do.
Also depending on where you go to school, i got 5 extra UAI points for going to a rural/disadvantages school.. then you can also get extra UAI points form the universities as well
