Both City and United would have preferred to come last than 3rd. Now they get to look forward to Thursday Europa games travelling to distant parts of europe followed by Sunday league games. I hope they both make it all the way to the final.

No power shift. Teams progressing in CL is a dumb way to judge a league, always has been.

Italy having three teams in CL fixes none of the issues in Italian football. (Dilapidated stadia, poor crowds, poor marketing, limited financial resources). Only proves that the quality of sides in Italy is not bad as most make out, and that despite not being as good as it once was, the Serie A is very competitive.

Only thing this morning proved is that Man Utd aren't very good (worst Utd side I've seen in years) and it takes more than just money alone to build a team capable of challenging in the CL. And City really need better players than Gareth Barry in midfield to dominate games in Europe.
They've survived with a shithouse central midfield because of the quality of first Ronaldo and later Rooney but it's at the point where that doesnt compensate anymore. Terrible central midfield, Vidic a good central defender but thats about it and most of their quality players (evra, especially ferdinand, giggs etc) past their peak.

Still, Scott Chipperfield knocking out United :D

The Dinamo v OL game is being investigated although it looks like it is a routine probe in to a game that appears to be unusual but it was a very suss finish to Group D.

Lyon hit out as Dinamo win is probed

Lyon have strenuously denied accusations of foul play after online gaming authorities started an investigation into the club's 7-1 Champions League victory over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

The French club required a swing of seven goals to reach the last 16 of the Champions League and with rivals Ajax losing 3-0 to Real Madrid, accomplished their aim when beating Dinamo 7-1 in Croatia. They had scored only five goals in two games prior to their trip to Zagreb.
The regulatory authority of online gaming, Arjel, said in a statement to AFP it was "carrying out checks" into the result, adding this was standard procedure for an "unusual result in a sporting competition."
Ajax were disallowed two goals for offside and coach Frank de Boer said he wanted UEFA to look into events in the match between Dinamo and Lyon.
"If there was something unusual, UEFA should investigate what happened in Zagreb," he said. "My assistants have told me that the goals came quick and easy, because you can't normally score these goals in half an hour."
Lyon sporting director Bernard Lacombe was angered by De Boer's comments and dismissed suggestions of wrongdoing.
"It's total rubbish, people should stop saying such things," Lacombe said. "Did they open an investigation at half-time when it was 1-1? I don't give a damn what the Ajax manager says. Apparently we are also responsible for the refereeing of the match in Amsterdam."
Lyon said in a statement that the decision by Arjel was "completely in tune with the procedures of the governing body for online betting.
"The club totally approves of this action that is undertaken whenever a sporting result is considered unusual and we regret that comments have not been confined to the sporting aspect of an incredible achievement both for Olympique Lyonnais and French football as a whole".
Dinamo coach Krunoslav Jurcic was sacked after the heavy defeat.

What is de Boer insinuating exactly? That Aulas/OL paid off Dinamo's players and the UEFA officials in Amsterdam? Absurd.

Dinamo had nothing to play for and OL did. They can be a devestating side with the pace they've got when they're in form and that's what's happened. As for the 2 disallowed Ajax goals, even if you factor them in, OL would still have qualified.

Also just wondering if anyone knows, is this the first time since the Champions League format was adopted that the English, French and German Champions have all failed to reach the knock-out stage?

I reckon we haven't heard the last of Lyon/Zagreb.

That result is a bit stinky...
I didn't watch it, so it's hard to comment, but you do know there was a red card in the first half right?

So here is the tally of teams per nation that have progressed, just for the hell of it:

3 Italian

2 German
2 Russian
2 Spanish
2 French
2 English

1 Cypriot
1 Portuguese
1 Swiss

About the same as Utd's, no result

About the same as in completely different. No result (?) is better than non existent.

You couldn't even qualify for the comp we have ended up in as a prize for playing like utter cr*p.

Go youze la.

Defender Domagoj Vida is at the centre of these match-fixing allegations and pics like this don't help his case...
