Yes. And?

and nothing.

He tried to make a point where the champs league is used to compare the strengths of leagues, forgeting the current holders are English and that a league has more than 4 teams in it.

I also love the gem about "and to not have its full allocation of sides qualify for the knockout stage".

Borrusia Mochengladback and Udinese say hi...

Then he doubled the fail by backing this up with a fact so interesting it was totally wrong.

All in all a typical LU post about soccer. Good stuff. :D

The UCL is the best and most direct comparison. The Champions of England were thrashed by the Champions of Spain, Germany, and Holland. The English European champions were thrashed by the Italian champions. The 3rd best English club was thrashed by the 3rd best German club. How more direct a comparison do you need?

And if you want to look at the depth of a league rather than the top 4, we can look at Europa League results too. Won twice in the last 3 years by a Spanish club.

Sure, we can factor those in. Means 75% of German clubs made it and 67% of Italian clubs. Still better than 50%...

So 75% of the German teams not even been good enough to make the group stages in a competition that was won by an English team last year makes the Bundesliga better?

Best. Logic. Ever. ;-)

You still haven't explained why it matters at all, Sam. Other than the fact you have a complex about the English league similar to Toney's.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I'll have a guess though and say that you're referring to the 2011-12 UCL. Leverkusen and Bayern made it out of their group and Dortmund didn't which is a 67% conversion rate. Not the 25% I think you were alluding to. And 67% is still better than the 50% of English teams (just Arsenal and Chelsea) that made it out of last season's group stage.

It matters in that it contributes to the never-ending debate as to which is the best league in Europe and thus the world. And I wouldn't say it's a complex. But it does frustrate me the extent to which the EPL is obsessed about by the media and fans in this country whilst other leagues just as worthy of coverage are neglected. For example, last week the cracking Dortmund/Bayern game got barely a minute of coverage on SBS, whilst Norwich/Sunderland got a full 4 minute match report on Fox. Ridiculous.

Different leagues for different people, La Liga is between 2 teams but i still love following Valencia, if we didnt have to sell all our player we would have a WC team.

Realistically the EPL this year is down to 2 teams, neither of whom were very impressive in the champions league

Atletico Madrid, currently separating the traditional "big two" in La Lia, would wipe the floor with any EPL team atm over two legs.

And i reckon Malaga would at the very least be a 50/50 shot against either City or Utd, even in a match in Manchester.

Could draw them from the Quarters onwards. I reckon Manure would struggle against them.

Eh?

THIS season, 4 german teams started in the champs league. One of those teams was not good enough to qualify for the group stages. 1 out of 4 is 25%.

Interesting who knocked them out as well. Probably some world class team who would easily beat any English team, after all you would have to be deluded into thinking any English team stood any chance against the victors over Mochengladback... ;-)

Oh and yes you do have a complex. Its a clear as day, hence you mention the EPL in nearly very thread.

But before the draw is made and you can stop having a shocker, here is a quick one for you.

Barcelona, Bayern and United. Neither of these teams won there league or the champs league last year.

Currently they are 6, 11 and 6 points clear. If you had to bet everything you own on one of those teams NOT winning there league, which one would you put it on?

This is the measure of a LEAGUE, not the top 3 teams, they all have good teams at the top, its what is underneath thats the measure.

The only reason I didn't take qualifying results into the comparison was because no PL club had to qualify, making the comparison an unfair one.

BUT to appease you, I'll factor them in. So of the following leagues' full allocation of UCL spots;
100% of La Liga sides made the final 16,
75% of BL sides made the final 16,
67% of Serie A sides made the final 16, and
50% of PL sides made the final 16.

Also in answer to your question, Barcelona because I don't think they can keep this run up whereas there's still improvement to come for manure and Bayern are too far ahead.

Nah you didn't include them because they made you comments (that included a very needless insult in my direction) seem a bit silly so you just stuck to 'interesting' facts that were wrong because you have a complex against the EPL.

You would be 'delusional' to think otherwise. ;-)

I think a collapse from United because they are quite weak is more on the cards than an Atleti win in La Liga tbh.

I wasn't talking about Barca being the most likely of the 3 to no win because of Atletico. Real Madrid is 11 points behind but that gap will narrow because Barca has to drop points at some point.

The majority of Australian football fans love the Premier League, hence it gets the majority of the coverage. It's the league I care about, because it's the league the features the team I love. I couldn't give a rat's arse if it's only the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th best league in Europe/the World. I'm actually pleased that two of the 4 EPL teams crashed out of the UCL. If only Arse had made it 3 out of 4...
