One of the biggest misconceptions of the 2006 pre-season is that the Canberra Raiders have no depth and no talent.
I say misconception, because everybody who know even a little bit about rugby league knows how that the Raiders have what is almost an ideal mix of youth and experience.
Clinton Schifcofske, Simon Woolford, Jason Croker and of course Jason Smith are some of the best and most experience players in their respective positions in the competition. Clinton is less than 100 points away from breaking into the top 10 all-time pointscoring list. Simon Woolford is the second-best rake in the game behind Luke Priddis, Jason Croker has played more first grade than any other player in the NRL and Jason Smith is, well, Jason Smith.
On the other side of the ledger, you have the youth of Phil Graham, Josh Miller, Michael Weyman, Todd Carney and William Zillman. Graham and Miller are, of course, well known to those who follow the NRL, Graham for his lightening quick speed and dazzling skills, and Miller for his no-nonsense, hit em up the guts style.
If Michael Weyman can catch a break from injury, all signs point to him being the number 1 prop in the game in the not so distant future. Along with Weyman, Carney and Zillman are the future Australian halves pairing, and with Zillman set to be unleashed on an unsuspecting NRL this season the future is looking bright.
I still have not mentioned the undoubted talent of players like Alan Tongue, Troy Thompson, Terry Martin, Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, Ben Jones, Willie Raston, Jermaine Ale, Marshall Chalk, Lincoln Withers, or many more future stars.
2006, the year of the Raider! Predicted finish: Premiers.
