Hmm, I know from an accounting perspective you would have to be very, very lucky to get a job as an accountant with a Diploma/Certificate in Accounting. I think they're more for people interested in book-keeping or payroll sort of stuff.
And with the CPA/CA you need to have completed certain subjects at uni (which are standard across all universities) to be eligible for enrolment, otherwise I don't think you can even become an associate member, and CPA/CA membership is normally required for most jobs above the graduate level. Plus if you're working in payroll or as a book-keeper you can't fulfill your mentor program requirements (in CPA).
In saying that TAFE courses are far more practical for career paths outside the tradtional "professions" or for people looking to get new skill sets for the traditional stuff!
